Made in USA: SHANE VAN BOENING, 2012 U.S. OPEN 9-BALL CHAMPION

Why would anyone want to see players like svb and alcano being knocked out with a, for instance, svb vs orcullo random first round seeding? That would do nothing for the fans. Congrats to svb! Even if I was rooting for the magician.

You weren't pulling for Charlie?

HAHA, SO Shane didn't have to knock out any of his fellow country man?

And there is no need to discuss Shanes road to the title, If he didn't get the bye, someone else would have. If he didn't draw the players he did, you can't argue he wouldn't have won anyway. And if your going to say how can I argue he would have won anyway. Well by virtue of him winning. DUH. ;)

Smile, this is all good for pool.

Don't you rain on my Shane parade.

thats right,

Shane chopped everyone up this week, he played alone. Didnt matter who was racking for him. Aint often you see that in THIS event, usually it takes a few good rolls and a bit of luck to get there, races to 11 are short and lots of them. To win like shane did dont happen often, add up[ how many racks he lost vs how many racks all the previous winners lost, and see how he really did this week against all the past winners who played as many sets. I bet this weeks performance by SVB will be near the top of all time @ US Open.

It was great to watch JAM.

He even teared up during his speach when he mentioned Big Nasty.

It was a heart felt moment.

EDIT:
He beat the top (4) pinoys in a row. How strong is that!!

Shane beat all those Filipinos when the going got tough. He's made in the USA, pure American gold. What a great way to start my day, reading this news of Shane's fine victory. He clawed his way through a bunch of champions to get there too, never looking back.

You're still damn good. No one's gotten to you yet.

Congratulations, Mr. South Dakota Kid. This one's for you ---> SHANE!

We love you, Shane. Keep it going at the Mosconi Cup!

No matter introducing issues of the break or seeding, from what I saw Shane was the best at most all phases. He excepted the mission to play his best from start to end and I think he accomplished that. Most all that watched or were there would agree that the best player this week won.He played beautifully.

Good post, Jam. I like your Avatar that was just before this one. A photo of you. Great smile, very warm as well.

Well, it appears to me that he's rooting for the wrong team then!

I totally admire and even have a strong fondness for Jose, Bustie, Santos, Ronnie, Efren, Alex, et al. I don't know the other Filipino super stars, but these players, I do know. Each one of them is humble and a gentleman, on and off the table.

Believe me, I'm pulling for the Filipino contingency over all the others after the Americans get knocked out of a tournament.

I'm just happy to see an American do well in pool. It is a little disheartening to read posts written by American pool purists who continue to put down the American players, always praising the Europeans and Asians. I find their posts disgusting and offensive, and I have to hold back my fingers before they spew venom that I might regret later.

The American players just don't have the support here in our country they deserve, and I'm not talking only about financial support. A little patronage or team spirit would be nice from time to time. If they did, we just might have more American pro players competing globally. When their own countrymen bash the Americans, it tells the story of what's wrong with pool in America. Pool purists think they know it all about American pool. Well, they don't!

Another Great post by, Jam!!! Thanks.

I know I could be stepping on a minefield here but I doubt Shanes success and the failure of other American players in recent years has anything to do with lack of moral support. Shane's success is down to the fact that he works hard practices and competes in more international events. Along with very good fundamentals this has made him world class. The game has changed, the robots you seem to have much disdain for are successful for the same reasons, I suggest if other American players want to be competitive on the world stage they take a page from Shane's book.

Congratulations, Shane, on a big win. I'm sure Chad P. is smiling. And I imagine he was an inspiration to you in this tournament. You came through and proved you are a true world champion.

Best post in the entire thread! :)

I was fortunate enough to have had front row VIP seating for the TV Table the last 2 days. OMG!

I'd like to, and surely will, start a thread about many observations during my trip. Anyway, regarding Shane... When there was but 4 left (apparently 2.5 of them being Filipinos, lol), I was not real optimistic about the US (Shane) coming out on top.

But when Shane rolled in for his hotseat vs Alex, I saw a look in his eyes like I've never seen before. How can I describe it.... He looked almost MAD. His play vs Alex and then Dennis was perhaps the best pool I have ever witnessed.

If ya'll saw the match vs Alex, you saw somewhat of the "controversy" that Alex brought to Jay's and Shane's attention.

Allow me to say what I know and believe of it... The night before when Neils was playing Dennis, Neils took exception to Dennis' racking. In event you leave a little gap in front of the 2 ball (at back of rack), supposedly the wing ball is wired. Well, Dennis ran (I believe) a 6 pack vs Neils. During which, Neils took exception to the racking. I did not see this match FYI. But I was told that Ken Shuman intervened and tapped the 2 ball.

When Alex got Jay to the table vs Shane for the second time when Shane was racking, Jay picked up the cue ball and was surely about to tap the 2 ball. Shane looked Jay straight in the eye and said "No". Jay seemed taken aback a bit. Shane completed racking and then Jay closely inspected the rack and then looked at Alex and said "it's frozen".

Shane proceeded to blast the everloving piss out of the break and the wing went straight in. B n R again.

My long winded point is that Shane took, IMO, a big step up yesterday. He was determined and mad and no one was going to come between him and his 2nd Open victory. He was AMAZING. His attitude and approach seemed markedly different than I've ever seen him before.

I could not be prouder of him and how he handled himself. It was a great trip, even though the venue had serious flaws. I really didn't enjoy crawling under the tables to be able to "escape".

CONGRATS SHANE!!!

Wow! I love your reporting of the happenings right from the rail, up front and close. Man, you're so lucky to have experienced that. I wish I was there, but I feel like I was there with you, the way you shared the experience. THANK YOU!

That was like Tony Chachere's Seasoning on your Red Fish. Ca c'est bon!

I was tickled to see Shane win! Very cool that a nice guy comes out on top.

Just a little correction of facts here. The complaint by Niels came at the end of Game 3, after Dennis had run a 2-pack (Games 2 and 3). Dennis had another 2-pack in Games 6 and 7. He had no other B&R's in that match.

When this game grows up, neither player will rack....
..solves a lotta problems.
I know it's tough to have rackers in the early stages, but when they're
down to one table it makes sense.

Seeing as how there's only been one pinoy who's ever won the open, didn't that put Shane on the easy side of the draw?:wink:

I thought Efren had won the US Open once? Does Alex count for Canada and the USA? :-)

Exactly! That's all it comes down to. Shane puts in the time and he seeks out tough challenges. He is one of the few who steps up to the Filipinos and plays them even in Manila.

He is the only one who has taken on all challengers at the TAR matches. And he is the only one who has remained completely professional in all of them on and off the court. What's the worst we have seen out of Shane in the hundreds of hours of high stakes pool? That he once in a while tapped his cue hard on the table out of frustration? Compared to the antics we have seen off and on the table otherwise????

I used to tell players that they should be more Souquet as Souquet handles his business like a businessman. He is polite, extremely professional and always prepared. All pro players can take a page from his book.

As Jay has reported to us Shane hits balls for hours even when he doesn't have to. He simply keeps putting in the time and because of that he also is ready when things snap together and he gets the opportunity to take another title. Any study of true top champions reveals that they simply put in more time and effort. They work on specifics deeply so that they reduce the luck factor as much as possible. They try to understand their sport at the deepest levels and figure out where to excel.

Shane once said that if he could give one piece of advice it would be to practice shooting off the rail. How many of us have the discipline to do that for five minutes much less for hours to insure that we are accurate shooting off the rail? I don't. Do you? Do most of the pros? I doubt it.
