Every once in a while you get to hear something from a player that defines them.....

I had the privilege last night to hear exactly such a statement in QMasters last night....

We were discussing the break and physical skills...

Shane's statement was to the heart of who he is....

"I don't believe in physical limitations"

but the comment was stated with such conviction and followed up with other statements which made it evident that he didn't didn't believe in physical limitations..... PERIOD.......

Today a friend of mine asked me how that was possible based on what my friend perceives as Shane being limited by his hearing impairment...

I told him Shane doesn't believe in them because Shane doesn't have any limitations and just because someone wants to put a tag on him doesn't mean he EVER has to wear it.....

congratulations Shane!!!! your ability may only be overshadowed by your character........
 
Not to be polemical but how being deaf can be bad for your pool game? I mean being deaf ( he is not 100% though) is bad in your everyday life but in pool?
What does Shane think about harmless people who play pool? Or the players in wheelchairs?
He still doesn't believe in physical limitations?

There are plenty of stories about handicapped people who have done great things, and some of them amazing physical things. So in a sense Shane is right in that a person can be self-limiting if they believe that they can't do something when in fact they might just be able to.

That said there are physical limitations. But I'd say that we as humans in general have yet to find the outer limits. Who is to say that in a thousand years the fastest human might not be running 100 yards in 5 seconds.

Human limits/limitations are somehow superimposed by the space-time continuum. Probably a "new reality" will give access to what we like to call infinite.

Just to say one thing about Shane's hearing. During his match with Orcullo, the fans in the CCB section were talking so loud while Shane was shooting that Shane had to turn around to them and say: "Guys, I can hear you." How disrespective is that?!!! Not to mention all of the other loudmouth idiots talking during the match but also there cell phones going off, Earls included LOL.

I recollect reading in a few different places that Shane did have a cochlear implant done some time ago. So instead of Shane being deaf he is now considered to be "hard-of-hearing." To complement his cochlear implant, I believe he also wears hearing aids to help him hear.

That aside, I think Shane's comment that "I don't believe in physical limitations" can be taken too literally. Depending upon the sport or activity, certain physical limitations can inhibit one's ability to perform the activity or even excel at it. Sometimes one can work around the physical limitation but other times one may not be able to.

Shane is a quality guy and I'm interpreting his comment as if he'd said "I think that one need not be defined by any physical limitations they might have." He has shown, through his own sustained excellence, that he has not let his deafness (and yes, that's a problem for a pool player, as it makes them harder to teach) lower his sights in purusit of superstardom in his sport. In this regard, he is a true role model.
