Low Deflection Shaft

Hello everyone I want some thoughts on "Low Deflection shafts". I currently own a Andy Gilbert cue and i thought about replacing the shaft with a low deflection shaft. I assume the pros use them for a reason. Is the increase in english control with vertical and horizontal spin? Just looking for some advice to see if replacing the shaft will compromise the feel of the cue in anyway. Is is worth it? never used a low deflection shaft.. any thoughts? thanks again.

Low-squirt shafts don't increase spin or spin control - they just reduce squirt.

Changing to a LD shaft will not improve your ability.

You don't need a $400 driver to play golf either.

Yes, much easier to use spin, you won't get more spin, but what you will get is a lot less squirt so you can use spin and still make the shot.

And we are talking about $200, not exatly emptying the vault to buy one....

You know what the best thing about an LD shaft besides making your game better.... is that now you can buy any cue you want, and no worry about how it "hits"..... cause you just throw the same LD shaft on that cue and you are good to go.

I'm having a Willie Hoppe refinished as we speak, and yep, and having an OB shaft made to fit it so it will play like my other cues.......

Yes, technology that allows you to aim the cut angle instead of figuring out swerve is a waste of time. :rolleyes: Why should any one try something that would decrease their learning time, after all the pool room owners need to make more money? :rolleyes: In a kick shot with english why would you want a shaft that allowed you to hit a point on the rail simply by aiming at it instead of having to figure out how far to the left or right of that spot you have to aim to actually hit the spot (not to mention the change in rebound angle due to the arc of the cueball)? :rolleyes:

Or maybe your argument is simply in the wording... ability? LD shafts can help you learn to use English faster as you have less things to learn. Many players never master swerve. Eliminating some of it reduces learning time.

to the OP - As for compromising feel, yes, some do but some don't.

The analogy doesn't work. Here's a better one:

The GT-R has far better traction than a Vette. However, even with loss of traction, an experienced driver can turn that around in a very controlled drift. The GT-R driver has all the technology in the world that keeps it so that his car stays glued to the ground.

That's the difference.

to answer your question
if you put 2 different tips lets say a kamui soft on one shaft and a triangle on the other gilbert shaft
the cue will feel different
similarly if you put a LD shaft on the cue it will feel different
different not compromised
as mentioned before
once you have a shaft you like you can have any builder make you a cue with compatable pin and the cue will play "familiar to you from the start
 
Technically, it will help you play better (less room for error when using spin). However, if pocketing with English isn't on the top of your list for weaknesses, then it probably will make no difference.

LD shafts have both advantages and disadvantages.

An LD shaft does not directly affect how much spin you can apply to the cue ball. For more info, see:

First I wanna thank everyone for ur input. The next question is what type of LD shaft?? Predator, OB, etc.. My Gilbert is a 3/8-10 Pin Flat Faced Joint will that need to be customized?? And lastly can u get different tapers? The taper is so important to me. Enough questions for now :) ...Thx everyone

Find an old predator 314...NOT THE NEW 314-2.
The 1st generation predator 314 shafts hit just like a regular maple shaft...the new ones are made overseas and hit with a hollow dead feel.

You could expect to pay around 150...give or take 50...
Then send the shaft to Andy to make the rings match or use it with the current collar. Since 3/8x10 is such a common thread, u should have very little trouble finding a shaft.

Btw...these low deflection shafts do take some getting used to, the pred 314 has a real nice long taper, and you cannot re-taper them.

They're worth the money and trouble of getting used to. They'll really help you apply sidespin with more consistency. IMO. In your searches, if you find a 3/8x11 314 PLEASE LET ME KNOW. :cool:
 
My predator z2 made it much easier to learn how to play pool properly than a standard shaft.

Frustrating to play pool if you don't have your own cue with you. You become dependent on it.

I will respectfully disagree with you on this point. I don't think you should become dependent on one cue. And personally I don't buy that it is much easier to learn how to play pool properly with an LD shaft. They didn't exist when I learned to play and somehow many players still managed to play a respectable game. All shafts require some adjustment when using side spin due to squirt. Players need to be able to adjust to different playing conditions including using different cues. Now with that said, if someone likes an LD shaft then by all means get one.
 
My thoughts - if you play allot of 3 rail shape shots or allot of 9 ball/10 ball a low deflection shaft helps immensely.

You take out the guessing how much the cueballs going to deflect. And this will also help on tight pocket tables.

I had an OB-2 11.75 mm with Kamui SS made for my Josey. First, the OB folks are absolutely great to work with; friendly, professional and accommodating.

I actually find aiming and finding the center of the CB easier with the smaller tip. I have smaller hands so the smaller shaft feels good as well.

I haven't tried other LD shafts, this is my fourth OB and I'm very happy with the product. I prefer the feel of the OB-1 and -2 to the Classic Pro but that's simply a matter of personal preference. If your pin is 3/8-10, you should be able to find a used one rather easily, or if you buy one and don't like it, sell it with a minimal loss.
