Build a champion in a month or 2. Is this possible?

Please ........

I think the problem here is geno's use of the word "build" when he says "build a champion."

What's the first thing that pops into your head when you hear the word "build"? Of making something from nothing, right? Of taking bricks, plywood, 2x4s, and nails, and assembling them into a house -- that's what I think of when I hear someone use the word "build" -- especially in the phrase "build a champion."

The problem here, once again, is a marketing trick. Geno's making you *think* the impossible -- that he's going to take a player that can't play at all and "build" a champion in 2 months, even though his couching verbiage goes on to say that's not the case at all.

So, let's dispense with the marketing spiel, and lay it out:

1. "Build" a champion -- as everyone's definition of "build" allows -- in 2 months? IMPOSSIBLE.

2. However, to take an already extremely strong player, and *coach* them -- give them what they need, what they've been overlooking, or otherwise those skills to completely round his/her game -- I say that's very possible.

The problem here is marketing semantics. "Build" is a misnomer. "Coach" is a better word, because geno's not "building" anything -- that structure has already been built. He's just adding siding to the already-built house.

And, to even *think* that a single widget like "perfect aim" will "build" a champion borders on the bizarre.

Give me a call and I'll give you access to my financial records including my bank account. Show you how rich I am.

This is getting really old Sean. Everytime I do anything on here to create a little interest for pool you turn it into marketing.

I'm really tired of it. Sorry but it's the truth.

Sometimes you just have to love the game and try to do everything you can to help. If you ever met me you would understand.

I've met Geno. I've taken a quick mini-lesson from Geno. I've played Geno in a tournament. He beat me bad enough to make me not like it.

He's a good guy. Sure, he's out there trying to make some money......like we all are with whatever we do for a living.....but, I can guarantee you he's having fun and the main reason is to promote the playing of a higher level of pool.

I think that sometimes things come across a little bit "funny" on a message board. If anyone here met Geno, I can almost guarantee you that you'd feel the same way I do.

Looking forward to seeing you sometime down the line, "Machino".......

Sean:

I don't disagree with you that Geno is once again marketing his Perfect Aim lessons here. He as much as admitted so in his post when he said his protege would be playing matches while he (Geno) would be giving lessons. It was a subtle plug, but a plug, nonetheless.

However, marketing is something that is regularly practiced in these forums by many; not just by Gene. Some are even far more blatant about it than Gene, and yet, I never see you busting their chops for it. And I'm sure you are fully aware of all of those guilty of it, so I'm just curious; why do you pick on Gene, only? Is it a matter of you having more respect for the others, and less respect for Gene?

I know for a fact that the forum admins have no immediate plans of forbidding anyone from hawking their goods and services here, so we can either ignore their marketing, or we can let them know how much we loathe it. BUT, if we're going to pounce on one; why don't we be really fair about it and pounce on 'em all?

Roger:

First of all, it's too bad that Scott Lee deleted his post, because it would prove I'm not the only one "busting geno's chops" (as you put it). Which is not busting his chops, btw, but rather, setting the record straight as to some of the "claims."

I guess like many, I'm just tired of the "in yo' face" marketing that's going on, albeit I'm probably the most boisterous of any. I just don't pull any punches with this kind of stuff, because in a previous life (previous job), I myself have moderated Usenet news groups, BBSes, chat boards, and forums before, and spam was the biggest problem we (the mods) faced.

And geno's not the only one, btw. I'd gotten on Robin Dodson (robroy), John Barioni (Barioni Cues), JoeyA, Dr. Dave, and others (onesie-twosies, here and there). You just have a short memory, or are just engaging in a little "spin" yourself, Roger, to try to shore up your point.

It has nothing to do with respect "for one over the other" -- I actually respect Gene for his playing abilities and what he does "out there" on the road, furthering the sport. But there is a time and place for everything. The issue of unsolicited marketing is covered quite well in the Terms of Service that everyone who gets an account here has to acknowledge before their screenname is created. And, if there's a such thing as leniency, socking good will into the AZB bank in the form of contributing real usable information to the boards would have something to do with it.

As for what the AZB admins do, there's lots going on behind the scenes you don't know about, because it's hidden from you. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Just a thought

I was talking with Craig Z. at shooters a couple of weeks ago, telling him some of your road trip stories, and we both agreed that you could probably make some money writing a book.
Memoirs of Genomachino
Good luck on your venture!!!!!

I don't know, but I just wish I was the guy getting to go on the road with you for two months. I've never had any type of experienced teacher. It's all been trial and error which has been frustrating at times, but I slowly get better. Been taking pool seriously for about 9 months now all on my own. Only playing at a 9 in vnea, but at least I have gotten better.

Sometimes I make extremely difficult shots, but I just don't have the knowledge others have and certainty of what I need to do. Geno, I hope I can take some lessons with you someday, or some seasoned teacher. Good luck with teaching your student. I hope it works out.

I am getting a go pro hero 3 this week, so I will make some videos and hope some people here can give me some good advice.

Geno, hoping you still come to Ohio sometime. This coming week, the 17th though the 24th, I will be traveling between Columbus and Des Moines.

The best I can do is share our travels and experiences........

Man

I would give up so much to do this...

Hi there Mr Adams,

I hope to have enough time to share what I'm doing on the road and what's going on with Zack.

he made $60 playing $20 set. Not too exciting but he got some good practice.

I had a lesson to do at 1:00 that was a no show. Took Zack back to the room and got a bigger room. Then we both went back to the poolroom. Jamaica Joes.

I gave another lesson. His name was James from Virginia Beach. He heard my name at the tournament and thought he knew Gene Albrecht as the Perfect Aim guy and couldn't believe I was right there.

I worked with him for about 5 hours. i didn't have another lesson for the night so we just kept going.

then I went over where Zack was at and noticed Gabe owens was practicing on the 9 foot diamond. Said he hasn't been playing much and we talked a little about going to Olathe or maybe Tibedeau, La.

I've known Gabe for years and he has always said hi no matter where we were at. He was just a kid back in Olathe when I first met him. I asked him if he had ever heard about what i teach. he said no.

I said have you ever heard of Perfect Aim. He said yes. I told him that was me. He said really. I said. Yes that's me.

he really didn't know.

I told him I'd show him some of it and kind of did the whole quick version of the lesson.

Gabe is left eye dominant which he didn't know. Then I showed him what eye did what and he was kind of amazed. See many of the pro pool players just do it not knowing what they do. But Gabe is getting at the age where he really needs to start getting those eyes in the correct position because it gets harder to naturally get them there the older we get.

He was also amazed to see that he not only had more trouble when he cut the balls to the right and soon I showed him how to cure the problem.

I told him it was going to cost him. He smiled that great big smile of his. I told him the next time we played he'd have to forget to move the coin one time. We both laughed and said our good byes.

He agreed that everyone needs to know this. Even players of his caliber.

But you just don't know what you don't know if you havn't seen it.

Overall it was a fun day. Gave 2 lessons, one kind of high profile. Zack earned his keep $60 and we're back at the room doing laundry.

Need to get a good nights sleep and see what the new day brings.

This is what I would like to bring to you guys on here. Kind of keep you updated on what's happening on the road.

Thanks again for the interest and hope your pool playing is going well.

I don't see you comment when Scott Lee is hawking his services around the place. Couldn't be because you're chums, could it?

And as for the 'behind the scenes' stuff - please . Tell us what it is or don't mention it at all.

Ah yes, the expected "pile on" from my most devoted fan. "Gee, I didn't see that coming."

But alas, pot, meet kettle. Funny that you of all people should laser-in on Scott as an example. Your comment about Scott wouldn't happen to have anything to do with your utter (and outspoken) disregard for the product he specifically represents, would it, Mr. Only-the-Brits-know-how-to-cue-properly? You are talking out of two different sides of your face.

Folks:

We are getting way off track here, and to be honest, I did not intend my response to get into this.

I do offer apologies to geno for side-tracking his thread. It was merely to correct any verbiage used (e.g. the "build" over-expression thing), but it touched upon a hot button. Geno obviously has a large fan (customer) base, and the last thing I want to do is start a war here -- AZB has enough of them already.

I'll do better from here forward -- even if I have to avoid geno's threads altogether.

Apologies,
-Sean

Sounds like the making of a good book. Good luck to both of you. One final comment: Even though there are some excellent players in this country, most of the worlds best, and you did mention beating the worlds best, are located in the Philippines. So perhaps your road trip should include a passport.

Today we're going over to the other poolhall in town.

There is going to be some $3000 one pocket action there tomorrow.

Heading over there to see if we can pick up some scraps.

Might get Zack some more action and maybe a lesson or two.

I might even get in the box. For me it all depends how feel.

Are you going to be in OKC tonight? I am looking to play some at Joe's.

I only mentioned Scott because you did. And he offers a similar service, no?

I agree !! I've met Gene several times now in Dallas, Shreveport and OKC and he is a real nice guy and has a lot of heart.

One of the things I admire about him is his gamble (heart). He will show up to a pool room in a new city and gamble with whoever wants to step up. Doesn't ask for weight, doesn't try to get a line on anyone, he just plays.

Good luck Gene.

I don't know if genuine worldbeaters can be built.

Whatever the component is that separates shortstops from pros, or pros from top pros...I think it's a psychological thing. Drive is probably the best word for it. And you'll probably see evidence of it at an early age.

You can love pool and you can care about pool, but you can't program someone to, say, practice breaking for 6 straight hours and be awake the entire time, or not leave the house before they run 100 in straight pool, or whatever. I think kind of obsessive quest for perfection has to do with someone's personality and how they grew up.

What you sound like you're doing is teaching him to handle pressure. But for some guys, that "middle of the field" level is all they'll ever achieve even if they figure out how to 100% control their nerves.

I'm here Action or lessons.........

Ken

I sent Zack down to the room. I got up kind of late. Needed to recover from the tournament and the smoke.

I have about 5 players to call and schedule times for a lesson. I think some of them left but I'll find out. They all live fairly close.

Thanks again Ken for your help. I should have gotten your number but I'm sure they have it down at the room.

If you see this give me a call. 715-563-8712.

Looks like it's going to be a fun day.

I think Gabe and Chip is going to happen around 7 or 8 at Chesters.

I can either watch some great action for awhile but I'm sure someone will step up to the plate and want to gamble a little.

Now we have an option. They can play the kid or the old man.

Equal opportunity pool players......
