Why did Mike Deshane opt out?

I've met him, and he's not a jerk. I first saw him when he was a pup, just coming into his game. He played in Joss tournaments each and every weekend he could. He traveled with a Canadian Russian dude, whose name escapes me. Mike Dechaine as a young'un was dedicated, and then about 6 or 7 years later, I'm watching him play in the Mosconi Cup. That's pretty strong in my book!

I can add that at least my first interaction with Mike wasn't him crapping on APA players and saying they don't know jack because they're not good. Mike knows he's not perfect and has been man enough face up to that.

Lots of people come on AZB and call Mike all kinds of names. I think it is a privilege that he comes on here to answer not only our questions but to also defend himself. What other Pro players have we seen come on here and be as open as Mike seems to be with his peers? Give the guy some respect. He may have been a hot head in the past but we all grow up and mature. I think Mike's past is his past and he has had to deal with the ramifications. He has tried extremely hard to face his demons and is winning the battle in my eyes. Remember if it was not for pro pool players where would this sport or even this forum be today. Lets embrace those that try to help our fellow players as well as the game instead of slap sticking one another.

As kind of a newbie to the sport what I find direspectful is when someone posts a serious question because they are seeking knowledge and people turn it into a comicfest. For example although the responses in this thread were funny and amusing it feels like direrspect to the OP. I read posts on here and wonder why users even ask questions if all they are going to get is wise crack remarks. Not everyone on here is a veteran of the sport or this forum and some of us would like honest answers or would prefer to not hear anything at all.

But what IF BB became a real success -- something that actually put money in lots of pros pockets for the long term? Would that be bad?

What if BB became so successful that it just gobbled up all the current "major" events like Pac-Man? Would that be bad?

Well, yes it would be bad for a few promoters and for many fans who want to see lots of different pool games. But for pro pool, maybe it would be good. After all, do today's "major events" really provide a way for pros to earn a living? Sure, a few guys earn decent prize money in each event. But, as an example, which do you suppose is greater -- the total amount of prize money paid out in each year's U.S. Open 9-Ball event (forget the slow-pay aspect of it) or the total amount of money spent by the players on the event (entry fees plus expenses for travel, hotel, food, etc.)? I'm guessing it is a big negative each year for the entrants in aggregate (caveat -- many of them are amateurs who know they are "dead money" and are there for other reasons).

But BB raises the possibility of actually being a net positive to the players financially. Jobs! Regular income! Stability! Hosanna!

But maybe I'm getting a bit ahead of myself.

Its all good if BB gobbles up the competition until they go under.

well said.

If one can't take the heat he can get off the table and go to a soup kitchen.

Disrespect

It's a brave man who calls someone a jerk online.

Perhaps those with opinions on a player's character should just heed the adage of not saying anything, unless they have something good to say.

Better yet match up, playing straight up and don't ask him for the 6 ball!

Almost as brave as someone who hides behind a screen name and runs his mouth.
I am outspoken at times and say what I want, but at least I am accountable for my words and actions.
Put your cheerleader outfit and pom poms down for a little bit, I am sure MD can speak for himself.
Are you interested in matching up? Oh wait! thats right no one knows who you are ;)

Are you coming to the Turning Stone in January? Maybe we can meet up and talk this over more.
Nobody knows who you are either...you're a pimple on the pool world's a$$ as far as I can tell.

James,

this is what I poke fun at sometimes with you. It seems like every conversation with you turns into you asking the guy to gamble. I don't mean to offend you when I joke back and offer you a giant spot. Sorry man, I won't mess around anymore.

Mike you know I like you, but you are a still a jerk.
You did piss me off that one time I played Jesse Engel but I am over that.
Thats why when we see each other we laugh this stuff off.

I thought you really disrespected the kid after he beat you. I stood up for him because I knew he wouldn't. Its all good man, you and Jesse would be a good game and I def want to see it again.

Who's classier in this thread SO FAR? James or Mike?

Yes, that would present some discontinuities to the pool world, but it would recover, somehow. And in my absurdist musings, BB becomes like the PGA, APT, MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, NASCAR. What happens if one of them goes under?

I don't care about any of those. I care about the events and promoters and PPV we already have.
