Why Pool is devastated by the new Smoking Laws.

MGT of America was commissioned to carry out a study of the economic impact of the smoking ordinance on restaurant sales and mixed beverage sales in Houston, TX.

Their conclusion was that the smoking ordinances did not appear to carry adverse outcomes for the restaurant and drinking establishment sector in aggregate.

Obviously this was not a study on pool halls.

A separate study was done on pool halls because they wanted to know how many cigarettes were bummed off someone else.

Hey Folks, I have yet to hear a room owner say "I am so happy for this smoking ban. Look at all the new business! Look at all the non-smokers flocking to my room."

I am asking "Who replaces smoking pool players? So far it has not been non-smoking pool players."

What pool players quit playing pool because they could no longer smoke in public?

It's patently obvious that advocating private property right infringement is totalitarianism.

Hmmm.....kind of like Government telling women they can't have abortions?

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?
GENERAL COSGROVE: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?
GENERAL COSGROVE: I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?
GENERAL COSGROVE: I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: But you're equipping them to become violent killers.
GENERAL COSGROVE: Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?
The radio went silent and the interview ended.

Take away: If a woman wants to be a prostitute, why deny her a damned cigarette?!

None that I know of. Many moved from poolrooms and bars to garages, homes, and private clubs. Many of these players have admitted to me that the amount of pool that they play has decreased since they left the poolrooms.

They must have quit eating, and doing anything else in public as well.

I am one.

My best friend tried to get me to go play and learn the game with him, at the local fraternal club that he belonged to (and as such, wasn't subject to the smoking ban that has been in place here for a long time).

I went a couple of times, and could not deal with the smoke, so I didn't keep going.

Once the club also banned smoking (without any government involvement, voted on by the membership) I joined and started this crazy pool journey.

So the answer is...one.

There are far, far, far too few of you.

Not true.
The smokers are back where I play, although from time to time they have to go outside and attend to their addiction.
The smokers who have not returned are the ones who have had to sell their cues because of the economy.

No one quit playing pool due to smoking laws. They just don't smoke over the tables. Therefore replacing them is not necessary. I did quit playing for a couple years due to the smoke so I know the opposite is true. A non smoking environment is like type O blood. Everyone can thrive there. Not so of a toxic wasteland of an environment. It's not the smoking, it's video games that's the culprit. Who want's to put their ego on the line against a real opponent when they can throw down on line?

With Europe joining in on the NO smoke issue, its now a no brainer, the smoke over there was Waaaaaaaaay worse than in the states and probably still is in some countries.

That would be the case for me.

Outside of work, I practically lived in a bar/poolroom when smoking was still allowed here in WA state. As a result, I probably shot pool for at least 20 hours per week... maybe up to 25.

The WA smoking ban went into effect on 12/8/2005. Within 2.5 years, I bought my first-ever home table (in 2008 at age 59), a 9-foot Diamond Pro Am, and had it set up inside my re-modeled garage. I love my table but my table time has dropped down to about 2 hours a week, a 90% reduction from when I was allowed to smoke at a bar/poolroom.

I rarely put one of my cues in a case and shoot elsewhere.

I am very happy for the smoking ban here in St. Louis City and St. Louis County. Look at all the non-smokers playing longer and returning with dates now. Women stay longer because their clothes no longer smell when they stay too long. People with kids will stay longer without smoke. All the smokers pool time went up because of smoking breaks. As far as I know, no smokers quit playing pool. Some may have migrated from my room to bars or across the river where smoking is allowed, but it was overshadowed by the increase in income from the people that stayed. Retail customers have complimented on the cleaner environment in our store. Our insurance went down after the smoking ban because of lower fire risk. Our electric bill went down due to air conditioners working less because of cleaner coils. We no longer spend the same amount in labor or cleaning supplies on cleaning nicotine, ashes and tar off the walls/ tables/ carpet.

We spent a lot of time preparing and cleaning up our place after the smoking ban. Either repainting or cleaning every surface in our building. It was a task we have been working on for 2 full years now and still working on. Maybe not having a bar meant our smokers were more adaptable? I don't know. But its been the largest increase in pool income we have had in years.

Smoking Laws....Naaa

Who is the Advertising Agency responsible for keeping Pool in the Concious of Everyday Americans?.......You wont find them.....so when pool starts going down in numbers...and you realize that hey...no new players are being made.....who is to blame?

Smoking, video game age, economy, etc, etc...but people still want entertainment and they will go get it.....but if they dont have the slightest idea what pool is and where to go get it then they wont....thats the bottom line....

Sure Pool is hard to learn to play its a difficult concept for some people to put their minds around so video games are easier but there are more people and some people like pool.....they just dont know it yet.....

Just another lovely day in paradise......

Wait a minute....all those advantages and you didn't do that voluntarily?

Why not?

This is a stupid post. Smoking isn't the cause of pool rooms closing. Its the cost of everything going up and wages going down. Thanks teabaggers, we love trickle down economics. We love busting up unions so people can earn less. We love right to work states so wages can be depressed. We love having no health care or retirement. We love working minimum wage and paying more taxes than Bank of America. It just like the other lies you hear. The recession, depression that started in 2007-2008 is something Obama created. People are so stupid in this country, they will believe the lies they are told because they are too lazy to care about the truth.

This kind of crap belongs in the npr forum but thanks for your uninformed conclusions.

From what I gathered from his post, I think the advantages came unexpectedly.

Now, he probably wishes he would have went non-smoking YEARS ago.

What is really interesting about Mike's place is on Friday and Saturday nights you will see a lot of couple or groups of people playing pool who aren't your regulars, and would be considered beginner level pool players.

What makes it work in my mind:
-The Owner is amazing
-A beginner league to get new people involved.
-Great food
-Great atmosphere
-a family section for those under 21
-A trivia night
-many TV's for games, shows, streams
-Private rooms for events
-great local players
-tournaments, handicapped and non-handicapped
-The People

My wife doesn't play pool, but her place of choice to go is to Fargo Billiards. It keeps getting busier and busier.

As far as pool playing, the best people in the region play here. So with all the extras, Fargo Billiards is a pool hall.

Fargo Billiards works for all of the reasons that you mentioned and more. I have tooted Fargo Billiards horn on more than one occasion and they deserve it.

But I noticed that in your list, you didn't list No Smoking, as one of the reasons why Fargo Billiards works. I am sure there would be many people who would not visit Fargo Billiards if smoking were allowed.

Many people are looking for nice, CLEAN, healthy places to go and spend their money & time and I'm not just talking about clean bathrooms which Fargo has the cleanest in the country. I think that as the science and study of the hazards of smoking and second-hand smoke become more acknowledged by mainstream society, the informed people search out places like Fargo Billiards to spend their recreational time and money. The numbers of informed people are growing, even here in the South where we are still stuck in the clouds of smoke.
