Now let's think about this.
Johan Ruijsink may soon be considered the greatest ever Mosconi Cup coach. He has leadership skills, shows wonderful sportsmanship, brings unity to his team, and has pool instruction skills. Yes, playing credentials and Mosconi Cup experience is also a plus, but are not critical.
If I think about which three Americans have everything it takes to be a successful Mosconi Cup captain in the future, they would be:
Johnny Archer
The perfect choice, should the day ever arrive when he is unable to make the team as a player. He sure looked ageless this past week, but his leadership skills were also on full display, as was his fine demeanor and sportsmanship.
Tony Robles
The former BCA Open Champion and member of a winning Mosconi Cup team was twice voted the sportsmanship award by his peers in his days on the Camel Tour. He is a highly regarded instructor and a gentleman of the highest order.
Mark Wilson
Mark is considered by some to be the best pool instructor in America. He plays pro speed pool and was a member of a winning Mosconi Cup team in the 1990's. He is highly respected by his peers and he is a perfect gentleman.
I think all three of these guys can bring the kind of stability and continuity to Team America that Johan has brought time and time again to Team Europe.
Established legends like Sigel and Strickland, who too often embarrass the game through their behavior, would be poor choices.
Finally, I concur that CJ Wiley did a solid job and put Team America in position to win. Europe was just the better team, and we've got nothing to be ashamed of.
