Re-threading a shaft?

When a shaft gets plugged and re-threaded, is it as strong as before, or is it weaker?

I plug every new shaft with a 2 inch piece of phenolic and thread it. I think it is stronger. I think the glue around the 1/2 inch diameter plug keeps the shaft from ever splitting or breaking near the joint.

Thanks for the info.

I also plug every shaft that I make but I install a piece of bocota instead of phenolic .525 - .550 in diameter about 2" in length. I feel phenolic is to abrasive on my taps and pins.

How do you feel the bocota holds up to a g-10 or phenolic pin?

I too like to use either Bacote or Flat Laminated Maple...JER

I like to use purpleheart whenever I re-thread a shaft. It taps very clean IMO.

Must be only me, pplheart does not thread great for me.
Tapping or live threading.
I like bloodwood, bocote, olivewood, maple and Zylarta for inserts.

It must be you Joey LOL. I wax the inside of the hole and tap with the precision tapping aid and it come out clean, so far.

For pplheart and maple rods, I coat them with thin CA then live thread them.
I don't do that with bocote or bloodwood or olivewoook b/c the oil in them takes care of that somehow.

Joey,

Is it the light which make the bottom thread look like non-triangle cut?

Good advice with the CA.

As for sleeves in shafts-I have done maple so far but have a plan on using a P.H tennon on a broken break shaft..
