How hard is it to say something good about a pool player and pool halls?

great poolrooms

I have to throw in a big thumbs up to Marietta Billiard club home of the scorpion. Actually a nice place to play with great people good food and drink.

Kolby Cornor Pocket in TEMPE ARIZONA is the ONLY REAL POOL ROOM in the Valley of the Sun, they do not need HARD LIQUOR SALES to make people come to KOLBY's.

Aaa

How hard is it to say something good about a pool player and pool halls?
Must be pretty hard. I'm the only one.

AAA Billiards, OKC. 3 nine ft. GCs. 3 snooker, one 3 cushion and 7 Shelti bb. Snooker two dollars Hr. All others three bucks Hr. Regular golf game with all the bantering that seems to go with that game. Tables cleaned daily. Nice staff. Table sales and service. Cue repair by Kent Taylor cue maker. No smoking. Kent knows every player of any significance and used to play quite well back in the day. Has even played Azs own Jay Helfert! Great stories from Kent. No grill but hot dogs and stuff. Lots of people just bring their lunch and order out. No loud music. Show up early and regulars get their tips done while they play. If your close to pro level he will stop and fix you up right away.

I play at The Fraternal Order of the Eagles club, in Brewer, ME. The drinks are cheap, the pool is cheaper. .25 a game. The place is clean, the club members are a good bunch, they have live entertainment on the weekends, and the club raises a lot of money for charity. No smoking, and the club has a fenced in smoking area (so you can take your drinks with you) complete with patio tables and chairs for good weather, and a heated enclosure for bad weather. Everyone wins that way.

The club not only let's us play APA out of there, with no charge for the tables all night, they even pay the annual Apa memberships for any player on a club team at the beginning of the year. ($25 per player, and we currently have 4 teams out of the club.)

We have five 9-foot Olhausens, kept in reasonable shape. Could they be better, sure. But they are decent enough for a non-profit club like ours.

In addition to APA, we have an in-house league on saturdays, a couples tourney on Thursday evenings, occasional in-house tourneys, and travel tournaments between the five clubs in the state.

Lots to like.

That's totally wrong. There are so many threads on here praising this or that pool hall or pool player I couldn't possibly count them all.

I realize the positive threads don't outnumber the negative ones, but there are still a ton of them, mostly with genuine compliments.

BTW, I love First Break in Sterling (I say for the 20th time), and I like Earl Strickland and Stevie Moore, amongst many other pros. I root for Brandon Shuff more than any other as he is the leading player from our area and the only top pro I know personally. Also he is a very nice and down to earth guy.

I think I said I maybe, but it is up to you and the other members fans and friends to add your input! Thanks for your post!
Many Regards,

25 posts. Just saw this thread looking for positive feedback. Not a good reflection on our sport if only 25 positive comments about pool halls or players. How many AZ members are there? :(

8 Ball Sports Bar and Sportsmans, Columbus, OH.

I drive 60 to 70 miles one way to play in Columbus. Both places are decent places to play. Richard Whaley the owner at the 8 Ball and Jerry Conkle the owner at Sportsmans are both doing a lot for pool in Columbus. There is another room called Players Family Billiards that I heard has a new owner. I want to check it out as soon as I can. It used to be more player oriented, but its been a long time since I played there. There is a new casino right around the corner from Sportsmans, and the 8 Ball is having a bar box 9 ball tournament in January that had around a 100 entries last year. Richard spent some serious money to upgrade his 20 Valley bar boxes not too long ago. They play nice. Sportsmans has Diamond tables, both 9 ft. and bar boxes, and a couple of those funny tables with no pockets. Its always great to watch someone put balls on those kind of tables and then realize there are no pockets.

It seems to me that pool players and pool related people always look for something bad to say about a pool player or pool hall!!! Would it be hard to look for something to say good about a pool player and pools halls, or tournaments as well? I may be wrong in my thinking, but I am saying this from facts I have read right here on the AZB forum!!! Thanks for your input! Their are so many good things you can say about pool players, pool halls, and pool tournaments!!!

It's sort of like asking "why do people in the pool hall come up to you and want to play you but want weight?

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=298416&highlight=people+weight

that seems to me like someone always looking for something bad to say about a pool player???

You are playing both sides of the coin. A true "Hustler". That's why the World Famous Lock Society...is SO world famous.

The establishment where I play might as well be called Cheers, because it's a place "...where everybody knows your name." I like that about our pool room.
There's generosity here, as well. You may recall that a fellow AZBer lost his cue making business in a fire a couple of months ago. People here got together and put on a small tournament, held raffles, took donations, and demonstrated that even though times are tough and getting tougher we could all join hands and help this young fellow weather the storm.
Not only am I proud to be an American, I'm proud to be a pool player.

Why Tramp,
That is wonderful on both counts! Very nice of you and your pool hall guys. That is togetherness all the way! Thanks Tramp.

There are 2 poolrooms here in Indianapolis and the one most people have heard about is Brickyard Billiards. It looks like a cool place, but it's on the direct opposite side of town from where I live in the north suburbs. The place I play is Executive Billiards on the North side. It certainly doesn't look like much, but I always enjoy going. The owner seems like a fairly nice guy and ditto with the houseman that is there when I usually go. What it may lack in amenities it makes up for in character and characters in my opinion.

Q-Ball - In Springfield, VA. More people need to know about this place... best-kept equipment in NoVa, especially if you like Gold Crowns. Smoking, but it's kept under control. Always a fresh, uncored chalk. Ballsets polished every day. Every table has a bridge or two. Waitstaff is right on top of it and very friendly. Heated 3C tables and you may even get action on 'em.

Players: Chris Melling's performance recently made me a fan. Cool under pressure, and almost Efren-like creativity in akward situations.

I agree. After posting complimentary comments about local pool halls, their ownership and staff, and reading many other positive comments from others, I find this thread a bit misguided. I think the OP means well, but chastising the AZ membership for not making positive posts is going a bit too far.

So the sport looks bad because only a few have replied to someones thread on an Internet forum ? Seriously ?

:thud:

I like the idea of knowing which pool rooms are ok to visit, and I think there should also be a thread about which ones its best to stay clear of unless you are looking for that kind of action.

Absolutely love the poolroom over at Ithaca College which is where I play at when I'm at school. Only two of them are really maintained well and have little to no funky roll to them, but they're 5 Brunswick GCs with Simonis 860. I'm president of the billiards team here so the campus staff has always been responsive to my requests for new stuff and maintenance...

My big gripe with it is that the house cues are crap... they just glue Elkmasters on without shaping or anything. Terrible. This is because student staff puts tips on this way and doesn't have any sort of professional do it.

When I'm back home in Queens, NY, shoutout to Steinway Billiards, Carom, Paradise Cafe, Break Bar, BQE and Astoria Billiards Club... they're all great rooms.

Any, as far as players go, big shoutouts to local player Hendrik Drost (frequently plays Joss Tour stops), my cue repairman Dana Paul...

That reminds me that I should say something nice about pool at my alma mater, Indiana University. Back in the day (2005) when we started the pool club and pool team there it was mostly just us guys who worked in the poolroom/bowling alley on campus. Since we've left and even after the guys after us have graduated I think the pool club and team is still going strong. Also, John Bower who manages the Back Alley (bowling/billiards in the student union) has put new championship blue Simonis on all of the tables and they hosted the most recent ACUI nationals.

Straight Pool IU writes that in Indianapolis he usually plays at Executive Billiards because it is closer to his house, rather than at Brickyard Billiards. For exactly the same reason, I usually play at Brickyard. In this day of declining pool rooms and loud music and liquor and a bar atmosphere wherever there is green felt, Brickyard is a godsend. (I've never been to Executive.) The owners run a tight ship with excellent equipment and an atmosphere which is adult, sober, serious, and still hospitable to both recreational and serious players. Needless to say, the equipment is excellent.

Been to a few nice ones.
Legends in League City, Tx.
Bayou Billiards in Baton Rouge, La.
Rusty's on Camp Bowie in Ft. Worth.
Casper's in San Leon, Tx.

 Thumbs up to Slate Street in Rio Rancho, NM! 15-9' Gold Crowns and a clean, friendly atmosphere, good food, cute waitresses. Decent sports crowd, some live music, stays pretty friendly. $5 all day up to 7 pm, $10 entry 9-ball 6-chip tournament on Sunday nights. http://www.slatestreetbilliards.com/
