Band saw or table saw?

I have both. I will take the bandsaw over table saw any day. I use the table saw in rare occasions to make fixtures. Too bad it is a nice one. Now a band saw is great for re sawing and splitting point wood.

I have both and use both. But I use the table saw very little compared to the band saw. I feel safer with the band saw. Also a lot of material is expensive and easier to slab on the bandsaw. But for smoother point stock the table saw has the advantage.
I see two "kerf" posts. I would like to hear of ways to make the band saw cut smoother. I once saw a guy do a demo of a bandsaw in the Grizzly store in Springfield, MO using a thin 1/4 or 5/16 inch blade and he took a half log makbe 8 to 10 inches in diiameter and peeled veneers off it that were pretty smooth. I have never got that kind of results out of a band saw.

I have a Powermatic 66 table saw and a Jet band saw with a riser block, each does particular jobs better than the other.

If you want absolutely the best re-saw blade on the market, get a 'Wood slicer" blade from Highland hardware in Atlanta.(Highlandwoodworking.com) They're expensive, about $35, but using one of them is like doubling the power of your band saw. I can re-saw 10" snakewood. You also have to read the tips for re-sawing and band saws available in the highland hardware site under the "more info" section.

DO NOT USE THE WOOD SLICER BLADE TO CUT ANY PHENOLIC, NO MATTER HOW LITTLE. IT WILL DULL THE BLADE IMMEDIATELY. IT IS FOR RE-SAWING ONLY.

I put these guides on my old cheap Enco band saw and can cut clean smooth thin veneers. They're not as smooth as a table saw, but if you go easy they can get really close.
