When is enough, enough?

I just finished playing a young guy tonight and it was really bad for him. We started playing around 6:30. I was giving him the 8 and breaks in 9 ball on a diamond 9' for $10 a game. He was down $70 and decided he would up the bet to $20 a rack if i gave up the last 2 also. I agreed and ended up running him into the ground for another $220. Then he went to the ATM, came back furious and said he would play races to 5 for $100 if i gave the same weight plus two games on the wire. I hesitantly agreed hoping he would win some of his money back because he was getting really pissed. I won the first three races and he paid up then proceeded to tell me he would see me in the parking lot. Sorry this was so long but i had tip tell the story before i ask this....when is a good time to quit when your up? I've never not given someone a chance to win their money back, but when ours obvious they can't beat you and will start trouble, when do you quit? Anyone else ever have something similar happen?

Take his money, Cheeser.....he was trying to take yours.
I've told bad losers that you come to a pool room to play pool....
....you go to a boxing gym or a dojo to fight....
....so far, it's worked for me.

in many cases there is no place or good place to stop and especially with the younger players. They have to learn hard lessons and they can be painful ones.
Most today aren't going to the parking lot anyway, so just let them talk. Most today certainly aren't going without 5 friends backing them up.

Looks like his pride got in the way of his brains. Very few ppl have the self awareness to know that they are suckering themselves.

I dunno...tuff call.

I played aguy not too long ago and he plays better than I...by far, and I am aware o f more tha a few instances of violence that he has been the aggressor in.

I got a lotta games winner and he was getting pissed off, so i suggested we doiuble the bet and play his best game-and my least favorite- and he promptly lost a couple more. 'let' him win until he was a game winner and then I quit.

was dumb to even start playing. I am not supposed to win playing any game and got even less chance at ye olde fistacuffs.

If it were me, I'd have told him he had one chance to get his money back. All he had to do was take off his pants and hand them to me.

If he took the deal I'd say "this is what it feels like if someone beats the pants off you!"

I meant to say he was younger. I'm 27 and he was around 22 real cocky type. Now that it's done and over i think it's funny. He almost paid for that new justis case that I've been wanting.

Guy was steaming, i see it every day at work. They get stuck a few and will chase the money, no matter how small it is, till they go broke or they win peanuts.
Hes dumb enough to lose it, be smart enough to take it.

This seems more like a "Hey! Look at me." story.
You could have asked your question without giving all the details of the match-ups and $.

to the op;

if you see your opponent is coming unglued, it's always best to nip it in the bud. To get frustrated is one thing but if they start getting mean about it, you need to shorten up the leash real quick.

Quitting winner without giving an opponent a chance at getting back their money is ng, but you not only gave him an oppty, you adjusted the spot to his favor three times.

As for trying to 'nip it', if I see an opponent crossing over the line from frustrated to mean, I'm letting them know before the next rack is broke that I'm willing to keep playing but it's on the condition that we proceed like gentleman.

And if it's gone past that point to where you're receiving a threat like the 'meet you in the parking lot' comment, I like what pt suggested in reminding him that we come to the pool hall to play pool and fighting is more appropriate at other venues.

FWIW, I think the guy saying he'll see you out in the parking lot was just letting off some hot air because if he was truly wanting that, he probably wouldn't have paid you for the last bet. They usually don't hand over a wad of cash then look to beat you up over it.

I think there is a lot more fighting in parking lots than in a ring, LOL! And it seems to me that a parking lot is a more appropriate place for a real fight as well.

Anyway, I don't think there is an easy answer, and I think you really did all you could for the guy.

What would I have said when he said he would see you in the parking lot? I would ask him how much of a spot he needed there.

No one ever gave me a break. Lesson learned

I had something similar happen to me. Playing a young punk who thought he should beat the world. He goated me to play and then only wanted to play for $5 a game. I said fine we played. He shot twice in 7 games so he gets mad pays and he and his buddies leave. When I get outside my doors were kicked in on my truck! All over $35 mind you. I have not seen him since but if I ever do :grin-devilish: so I try to avoid those young punks. You can generally tell the type before you play.

I had that happen to me in the alley behind a poolroom. Young guy wanted to fight me after a pool game. I told him he had a choice, go home or go to jail. He went home, TG.

Yep, I've seen 'em.

You damaged his precious self esteem so you had to be damaged. How dare you? It reminds me of a girl on Am Idol who sang like crap and cried when they told here that. She said that all her friends and teachers said she could sing. She was living a lie.

If you haven't grown up emotionally before you're 21, a pool hall is a good place to do it.

Lesson learned for me.....looks like a punk or drunk dont play. Its not worth it.

Sad to say, but I have been on both sides of this. When I first started playing I lost to a guy that I thought I should run over. I got lippy and he became Bruce Lee and beat the hell out of me. I learned my lesson real quick. I have grown up a lot now and had a kid do that to me a few months ago. I told him that the money want worth going to jail and to be a man in front of his friends and pay me. He payed me and we have actually shot together a few times now.

Hopefully he came to his senses eventually and felt a little ashamed at the parking lot comment. Obviously it's not your fault for agreeing to a game he proposed and then playing your best to win.

The ones who warn you first are just venting, you gotta watch out for the ones who say nothing but then hang around outside.

Devil's advocate - did you say or do anything that might have made him want to fight you? You didn't rub it in a little did you? It's one thing to woof before the start, another to kick a man when he's down. Did he maybe think you were laying down earlier and flat out hustled him?
