Road warriors, past vs. present.

I'm intrigued to see mention of Cheyenne Pete on the forums. There seems to be some differing views on his playing ability, of which I would not know as I've never met the man.

HOWEVER, I am pleased to say that Little Joe Villalpando is a friend and he knows VERY well of Pete's "speed". Let's just say it was pretty high....high enough to win a major!

BTW, Little Joe can still dab it a bit..."Lil Joe Collects Another Tourney Win!"

FYI the captions on the photos of Little Joe Villapondo and Cheyenne Pete Trujillo are reversed. That's little Joe on the right and Pete in the middle.

Roll Out Rules RULE....let's bring back rules that make the Game challenging and give someone a chance to truly dominate the Game. One foul was designed to speed up play and as a "field equalizer" to get more players in the fields. It accomplished that......good job, now we can all retire. ;)

What a change that would be now. It would definitely bring the bank shot back into pool. i can see the look in some eyes when they have to go for something.

pete and Joe are brothers in law. Francis, Pete's wife is Joe's sister. jpe played well on the bar box and Pete played everything else well.

Yes, the "two way shot" (usually a bank) is one of the most skillful shots in pool and one foul took it out of the game.

.

I have nothing to offer on the thread subject but an observation of how much things have changed:

Back in the day there was a guy named Pete Glenn who was a road man who worked the Midwest mainly but traveled all over. He managed to not only support himself, but raise a large family (5 kids iirc) all off of winnings out on the road. He was not alone. Guys like Don Willis also supported families out working the road.

Nowadays our pros (!) are lucky to support themselves off their skill. And these are above the radar champions.

Guys like Pete or even don Willis? Footnotes to history known to few. Sad.

I purchased a car from lil joe several years ago and that billiard news paper was in the trunk of the car when he got all his stuff out of the car.. I asked if that was really Elvis with him and tells me the story behind it. I don't remember the whole conversation but I do remember his telling me that him and his partner had to beat several Billiards hall of famers to win the tournament..
I don't know where u heard joe played only on the bat table and Pete played well on everything else.... Joe took Pete's lunch money everyday on the pool table..joe taught Pete how to play, Pete never played from cost to cost because his wife would of castrated him but he played every road player that came thru...
I talk with lil Joe often, he is a great guy and a good friend.
I will talk with mark to see if we can set up a interview with lil joe, < i think mark would be the best to coordinate such a intervew..I did mention it to joe and he likes the idea. Elbow-Elbow-Bump-Bump at mark:)

Isn't the guy in Denver who owned Colfax Billiards in the family mix somehow? I know he and Pete were close and traded game machines back and forth between their pool rooms.

Joe and I used to play at an all night bar in San Gabriel, just outside Los Angeles, in the early 60's. Joe worked for the Social Security Admin before he took to the road.

I will miss seeing him at DCC this year. I am staying home.

That would be Frank Burgess and I am pretty sure, not in ;the family mix but very good friends. i remember I was in the pool hall when Frank got the call that Joe and Pete had won some doubles deal in Vegas and Frank was darn near in tears and so happy for them.

I did not hear about it, I witnessed it for many years

Thanks for correcting that, you beat me to it. I am going to be going into Pete's hall today and there are several pictures and newspapers with them all on there and even the big check from winning that doubles tournament is on the wall. I will take some pictures and post them up late tonight or in the morning. One other thing I would like to mention, there is a reason that Kid Delicious went to Cheyenne to play Pete, it wasn't for the money (even though that obviously is always nice) because let's face it, Danny didn't make a huge score from Pete. but because Bob and Danny heard that any real road hustler had to go play Pete. And this is straight from the mouth of Pete's daughter literally a minute ago, Joe was a better barbox player and Pete was a better big table player in her and the general opinion around them.

Jeremiah Johnson won that tournament at the CowBoys Casino. Does anyone remember?

Joe and I played for 18 straight hours in Hutchenson Kansas almost 30 years ago. What a match that was, it would take a minute to describe that match. Jeremiah Johnson won that tournament at the CowBoys Casino. Does anyone remember that tournament?
