Build a champion in a month or 2. Is this possible?

Are you all going to be at the Derby Geno? I'd like to see this kid of yours play some. I'm sure there will be others besides CB that you can make a game with.

In the real world if you are a self-employed entrepreneur then sometimes you ask others to invest in your projects.

Athletes in all fields routinely ask for both investment and sponsorship.

In fact in the real world more often than not the people who build companies do it on other people's money and not their own.

John Schmidt came on here and asked for sponsorship to the US Open. He then won it. Paid off good for him and his investor. Poker pros are routinely backed in both tournaments and cash games.

In fact people are eager to back winners and those who show potential. I just don't understand the advice which seems to be quit following this dream and become a working slave to an 8 hour a day job. In other words become the type of person who only talks about those who are out playing instead of being the person who is out there playing.

I mean I can understand the desire for stability and security but why are we assuming that Zach is irresponsible? Why are we assuming that he does not already understand these things? If he is 23 and unattached then why not allow him the opportunity to run with this for a while and see what happens. One thing is certain, he will never get this experience if he gives in to the standard version of society's notion of what a person is supposed to do with their life. But if he goes with it then no matter what he will always have these memories and experiences that others can only dream about.

When I was a kid Zach's age, me and my buddies used to talk about fixing up our cars and going to the track. Well..I was the kid that actually did it, and 40 years later I'm glad I did. You make a really good point in your post. Zach has plenty of time left to do the 9 to 5 or whatever you want to call it. Go for it Zach, it will give you stories to tell your grandkids someday.

Hi there Steve,,,,,,,,,

When I was a kid Zach's age, me and my buddies used to talk about fixing up our cars and going to the track. Well..I was the kid that actually did it, and 40 years later I'm glad I did. You make a really good point in your post. Zach has plenty of time left to do the 9 to 5 or whatever you want to call it. Go for it Zach, it will give you stories to tell your grandkids someday.

We're both living a dream. I just know how to control the dream a little better. Zach is learning.

When Zach told me he didn't really care if he went to the derby he knew I would put him in. He had already decided to not go because he felt he wasn't ready plus he can see we need to treat this road work like business in a box.

I think we're eventually going to get over to your area soon.

For now the Derby is out.

Excellent choice. The DCC can be a lot of distraction. It will be there when zack is ready. My only other advice is to follow Shane's lead and put in the table time.

If Zach or anyone else can get other people to sponsor them and pay their bills, that's great. More power to them. However, not everyone will be able to get financial support and for those people they need to invest in themselves if they want to achieve their goals.

In an earlier posting, Gene wrote: "When he (Zach) told me he didn't care if we went to the Derby or not I was just floored. That's all he talked about for a long time." Zach was really looking forward to playing in the Derby but apparently had to cancel his plans due to a lack of financial backing and his own personal lack of funds. If Zach had saved some of his gambling winnings, he might have been able to play in the Derby even without his backer's support. That's called being in charge of your destiny. You decide what's important and you do it regardless of the obstacles in your way.

I actually think its to Zach's advantage to play in tournaments like the Derby and the US Open. He's 23 but he is approaching a cross-roads in deciding whether to pursue this sport as a career. This is the time for Zach to find out if he has the talent, the skills and the desire to pursue his dream of becoming a champion.

I'm not sure that it makes much sense to compare pool to other more lucrative sports like golf and tennis. SVB made about 148K in 2012, however, 30th place on the 2012 AZB Money List made just 22K playing in tournaments. The reality of the situation is that most pool players, including Zach, are going to have to supplement their tournament incomes by doing something else to help pay the bills.

All good points as well. A player that is self supporting has no one to answer to. He can take on partners at will without the pressure of having to be backed.

Looks like Zach might be done with the road.......

Zach got offered a job that he might not be able to refuse. While at the tourny in Beloit . Sounds like a pretty good setup for him.

I'll find out today if the job is for real but I told Zach if everything looks good to take it. He can still play pool and build up a bankroll.

I'll be just fine doing what I do. Teaching, traveling and playing.

Regardless of whether Zach stays on the road or takes the job, the experiences and lessons he has learned will stay with him forever and for myself it was nothing but fun.

And who knows. There is always another champion that needs to be built or at least started.

The road is not for the weak. it will chew you up and spit you out a little piece at a time. Learning to tame the beast is an art all by itself...........

Zach is by no means weak but the road can take a short term toll on a player. A player on the road forgets sometimes why he does this in the first place only to go back to a 9 to 5 and sometimes struggle with lack of something exciting happening day in and day out.

Zach is young and will probably change his mind about the road many times over his life. I speak of the road as a beast that will chew you up and spit you out, but it also has claws. Once those claws are imbedded it's hard to stay away for good. We just keep coming back and back and back.

Those of us that have been on the road know the story and those that wish they could can see it over and over on the local level, the players that leave and come back broke.

For me, i can't wait to get to the next poolhall and give the next lesson. I can't wait to hear someone say : You want to play some.

Every poolhall is a new adventure just waiting to happen.

Look out Cincy. It looks like Perfect Aim is coming your way. Can't wait. I can't believe I'm not there already.....
Oh yaa. The packing at the motel and the long drive. Here i come or maybe here we come..........

2 men a van and the road........

You might want to think about shooting up to Detroit for a few days. Couple guys looking for a tune-up before Derby and you should be able to get quite a few lessons if you swing up on a Tuesday. Tournament and a few leagues on Tuesdays so a lot of people who might be interested. I would be able to introduce you to a bunch of people for potential lessons and should be able to find you some rotation, one-pocket, and bank games.

I'm in Indy right now...........

Got to Indy last night and went to the poolhall. Brickyard is the place.

There was action all over the place. Big Arm John was playing on the bar table and Woody was playing some one pocket. There was other games going on all over and they were all pretty serious.

Once I get up tomorrow I'm going to a couple of other places and get the word out.

Got a few scheduled already. I'm going to do the $100 guarantee with every lesson from now on. I can't see why not. it works for everyone and everyone understands how much they need to know it once they understand how it works.

And Mark, I'll call you as soon as I get up. Looking forward to our lesson for sure.

Good night everyone or good morning i guess.

one man a van and the road. I guess that sums it up.

Gene,

If Zack decides to take this job offer you were talking about, you ought to consider taking on another road partner, maybe this time, someone a little older, someone who already has their feet wet and who might already be financially secure.

It would be pretty cool to hear stories of you traveling with a new road partner who carried his own weight.

Maybe you could travel with someone who wasn't necessarily a top top player but who already knew how to handle the responsibilities that go with traveling on the road.

I remember Alan Hopkins used to travel with a guy, maybe a bookie or some sort of gambler type guy. He didn't play pool that much but he would make side bets, haggle with the locals and seemed like a compatible traveling partner.

Heck, their might be some guys on this forum who are itching to find out what being on the road is like.

There is a part of me that would enjoy traveling with you but I have committments that prevent me from doing so. I know we would have a good time. If I can't travel with you, maybe I'll see you at some tournaments down the road.

Best regards,

Get me some games, Gene, I'm ready. "Have Cue Will Travel"

I'm going to train another Champion...........

Only this time it will be someone that always wanted to go on the road but never did. A way to fulfill a dream. This will be a 4 to 5 month commitment for someone. Not a little one week trip.

Maybe someone that has a business and wants to get away. Someone that has retired at an early age and always wanted to do this road thing.

It will be on the road training. Drills, excercise and proper diet.

I will be buying a huge motorhome so there will be very few motels. I will be pulling a little car to scoot around with.

This person will have to be drug free, alcohol free and a non smoker.

I also have some interest in a reality show type of setting. this isn't for sure but I'm trying to make it happen. it would be great for pool if I could get it done.

Have interest now but would like to have options. Anyone in the TV industry that sees this please inquire.

This is going to be the real deal starting almost from scratch. This person should have a little talent. But a higher level will be reached in a short period of time.

I don't have any of the financial prices worked out yet but it will come at a price. Just a guess would be the 30,000 range. So i'm not looking for someone that's broke.

It will have to be someone with some discipline that has already made their mark in the financial world. In order to get there they had to have some drive. A go getter.

Just get away from it all and live a little bit. it will be hard work but it will be a dream of a lifetime.

There has to be allot more thought into this before any offers will be taken or accepted.

This might be the first one of many.

Building a champion from the ground up. It can be done. And learning how to live and survive on the road.......

Geno, in a year or so from now, you woulda had me. Woulda. Till you mentioned the $30K nest egg. :P

I'm 38 now. No kids. Single. Drug free. Don't smoke. Think pool 24/7 and shoot as much as my day job allows me.

I'll be completely debt free in a year or so, with nothing to tie me down, and more than ready to get away from the 9-8 grind.

Now, if I could just scrape up that $30K.....

So is it confirmed this road trip is done? A little sad to hear it. I guess the 2 months is up though. Doesn't sound like Zach quite got to champion but he sounds like a heck of a player.

I had the impression you were straight up backing Zach, he didn't have to chip in. Did he come out ahead, after all the costs were tallied up?

What made you decide the next person to do this experiment will need to pony up 30k? Not trying to be a knocker but it comes across like you lost a chunk of change with this adventure and now you want to protect yourself for the next one and maybe recoup your losses.

Isn't the idea that the older player, if he listens to you, will be able to earn enough to cover costs? If the costs are covered, is the 30k strictly for your company and advice? You seem like a cool guy Geno but that's a pretty stiff price to buy a road partner

I wonder if he would loan it to me to go on "the road"...I mean "the air" with.

I think this would be a really cool reality show. With all the crap on tv nowadays, this would actually be really interesting.

Good luck with this idea. I'm setting up my DVR now to record this on the Travel Channel.
