Whats up AZer's? I'm on a 24hr CQ shift and bored out of my mind lol. Talk to me about anything, pool, cars, guns, whatever. I'll be here all night!

Heyas Doc... Sorry you are losing it on the 24hr gig and will try to give you something to occupy your time....

Based on the demographics of the military and most pool players I think the industry would be well served to provide more "pool" to our enlisted personnel...

What have you seen as the norm at the different bases you have been to and what could the industry do to develop a stronger tie to billiards among the armed forces????

I think the industry does a pretty good job, every base I have been to always has a recreation center with in the neighborhood of 10-15 tables. Every one of which is a Brunswick. And knowing how the military works, I can only guess that the army has some kind of contract with them.

As far as what they could do to make a stronger tie to billiards among the military, that is a good question. But I can't say that I have an answer lol

I'm stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA. I just finished reading No Easy Day. Good read if you haven't read it, I'd recommend it. I am definitely glad its not the weekend lol.

We have a table in the day room as well, that's where our CQ used to be. But the CSM came through the battalion a couple weeks ago and found the SSG on staff duty sleeping so now we have to stay put in the hallway by the main entrances

Glad to hear the Army still has some rec tables. I retired from the Air Force 4 years ago. I remember about the first 10 years I was in each base had a dedicated rec center and they all had table where we could play for free. As budget cuts came, the tables went away. Now maybe only the enlisted or officers club has one table. Some dorms still have one or two tables but they are very scarce

Yeah its still free, the one where I am now has cash prize tournaments every wednesday too. And unfortunately the budget cuts now focus on getting people out. Thanks for your service!

Fond Memories. LOL

Hi There Doc,

Oh Yes, I remember my basic training at Fort Lewis.

Does that base still carry the nickname " The Rock " ?

Bet the days of the coal burning furnaces are long gone.
U C Doc, I volunteered to stoke those fires so I could play on
the day room table.

Bryan is so correct about so many bases not keeping tables around.

I'm getting medical treatment at Travis Air Base and the only table I
heard of was being located at the enlisted club.
My how times have changed.

On thing is sure Doc, Mt. Rainier has'nt changed at all.
Bye the way it was a cold Winter that I spent there.

Stay Warm Doc,

Noel

Hey Doc, former Air Force here, did my time on an Army base though.

How does shooting pool compare to shooting rifles in your opinion?

In 1968 I was in Viet Nam on base called Chu Lai.We had 2 tables. They ran a straight pool tournament and I won it. I still have the little 8 inch trophy they gave me. So jokingly I call myself an International champion.

I can't say I have heard it called the rock, Mt. Rainier is beautiful when it's visible. Ever heard it called the "disappearing mountain"? I don't know what you are being treated for but I hope everything works out, thanks for serving!

Sorry you had to spend time on an army base! lol. We have McChord AFB next to us and it is much nicer haha girls are better looking too :p

I love shooting both, but honestly there are a lot of similarities between the two. Like focus, body position, aiming even follow through. Thanks for serving!

Hahaha well technically you aren't wrong! My grandfather served in Vietnam from 67 to 69. Thank you.

Doc, check out that post in the 14.1 Forum. Army MWR used to run some good pool programs. Unfortunately, I can't stay up tonight as I have a VA Appt. in the morning. Have a Good One.

Hi Doc , I'm only abot 15 miles away . But I'm old and tired , going to hit the hay soon . Take care . Jim

I was in the Army from 67 to 70 and spent all my time in service at Ft. Sill, OK after basic(Ft Bliss) and AIT (Redstone Arsenal). Our CQ was stationed in an large office mid-building. I only had to pull CQ once and I will say "boring."

At that time we had 2 tables in the day room. There were 2 of us that ruled the roost in the company. Once a year there was a 14.1 tournament for the post. It started at company level and worked its way up to post. It just so happened that the tourney always began when we had the annual AIG Inspection. Well, Trip and I would easily win the company tourney to advance on. This got us out of the pre-inspections. Next we'd move on to the battilion. All we had to do here is make a showing and we were out of the AIG. At that point the fire was gone and back to normal duty for us.

For me it was a piece of cake. I was E.D. and my job was easy. For me it was do my job and play a little after work and into Lawton on the weekends and win beers for my buddies and few dollars for myself.

Buffer skills

Hey Doc-

Do you guys still buff the floors on detail and/or for inspection.

We used to light off a can of carnuba wax and maybe some black shoe polish wax if the tile was black. Drip out some and get it spread before if set up.

I think there was a spreader cloth, and a couple of different stages of wax build up cloths, until you got to the final, almost brand new cloth.

We cut up OD wool blankets into squares, or folded some into squares, that fit under the buffer pad.

Some guys, particularly, for inspections-were amazing at getting that high shine going. Backed themselves out of their room/bay with the buffer-and wouldn't re-enter till after. Some would hire out-they had buffer skills.

I ran one OK. Just small movements of the handle could make that baby move back and forth, and forward and back. You gotta be careful of a 'runaway' though-stuff gets broken, people get hurt.

Good memories.....not so much at the time

As you was....

take care

can't say I miss buffing floors...I some times did this on CQ..had my runner doing other cool stuff..

I'm having trouble replying to everyone in "multi-quote" I keep getting a notification saying "awaiting administrator approval". Any reason for this? Sorry if it seems like I'm ignoring some of you but I'm being lazy and don't want to spend all the time to reply individually lol.

I love the stories though, always nice to talk to guys that served before me
