Hi,

Simple question: what is the best glue to use for installing tips?

thanks,
Cuong.

You are going to get at least a half-dozen answers here.

If you're not in any hurry for the tip to be trimmed/sanded, it's hard to beat 2-part epoxy. I have not had one single tip I've ever done come off prematurely. I always ask anyone I do a tip job for to let me know if it ever comes off, and I have not heard of a single incident of this happening.

CA glues are going to get the most votes (i.e. Loc-Tite Gel).

Thanks for your input.

do you mean the epoxy will take longer to dry? I look to do the tips myself so of course I am in no hurry.

Cuong.

I have used epoxy and I mostly use loctite gel. The loctite sets fast and I haven't had one come off. I do mine, and family and friends.

Krazy Glue works great. I have not had a tip come off and have been
using it for years.

Loctite Ultra Control Gel is probably the most recommended glue for tips by cue makers and repairmen. After scuffing the back of the tip, prime it with thin CA (super glue). Then glue it to the cue with Loctite.

I've had good success over the years with Loctite 454 Gel, regular loctite gel works ok also.

Thanks for your inputs.

I heard some say Taiwanese players use some kind of glue that is softer and more elastic when gel, they said it never came off and made the hit feels better. do you know of it? I think it is close to epoxy.

I used two part epoxy for years but I always let it dry overnight. Now I use loctite gel or gorilla gel. Tips falling off has not been an issue for me either.

Gel CA (cyanoacrylate) of various brands, Loc-Tite being the leader.

I honestly don't know how we did it well before these CA adhesives were popular. I remember being frustrated with epoxies in the 80's.

I have never had one come off, but I sure had trouble getting some on in the "old days".

Mask the ferrule, you'll be happy you did. ;)

My guess would be a rubberized CA. It's what I use and it works fine. Really no different than any other CA.

Thanks for your input, so normally the epoxy will take 8-10 hours to perfectly dry? I often have my tip done for 1 hour including drying, so I decide I should to it myself

Thank you. the reason I decide to do tips myself is that my regular shop has some steps of his own, he makes cuts in the glue side of the tips before gelling, doesn't mask the ferrule, and uses paper knife for scuffing the tips. He is also quite resistant to advice so I guess he is done for me.

I just facebooked a friend who is familiar with this and will get the answer and post here soon.

I use PineRidge archery arrow tip adhesive. it's a CA type glue that is made to take shocks, like an arrow slamming into a target at 300 fps.

loctite gel is my 2nd choice

Having used many glues, and installed hundreds of tips, without doubt this is the best stuff to get. Kamui sells it on thier website. You can get it at Home Depot for about $5. It sets pretty fast, so make sure the tip is well centered and pressed against the ferrule with moderate pressure within about 10 seconds. I confidently play with tips after about 2 hours.

Wow, thanks for the details, very useful sir.

On my old playing cue, a tip I had installed fell off twice(After 2 installations), so I glued it myself with some super glue and it actually hasn't fallen off since then XD...
