Jesse Bowman vs Norm Wines ?

Have they ever played for big money

Big norm came to Baltimore around 10 years or so, he played Bobby Legg on the bartable at Don Gibsons place (kin-tin), they were playing even 9 ball, races to 11 for 500, Norman beat Bobby pretty handily and Bobby was a top player on the bar box and big tables.

Norm had stayed around Baltimore for a couple of months and stayed in action the whole time (thats when Balto had tons of action).

Norm had beaten every player that tried him on the bar box here in Baltimore.

Only time i seen Norm lose a match it was on the big Table, He tried to play Cigar Tom even 9ball.

I gotten to know Big Norm a little bit while he was in Baltimore, and we became friends, he was a very likeable guy!

I was there and hung out with Norman and another road player he was with, to include their stakehorse. Their stakehorse was from Virginia, who told me he had a plate in his head. He actually scared me a little bit. I had been away from pool for a long while.

We were hanging outside one evening, in front of Sonny's restaurant, and the stakehorse showed me a gun he had in his car. Something about him gave me pause. I was not comfortable in his presence. :frown:

Norm, on the other hand, was very sweet. His partner and stakehorse did leave Baltimore eventually, and Norm stayed on for a while.

The year was 2002. That, I know for sure. It was the beginning of my journey with Keith, who at that time was living at the Regal Inn, next door to Sonny's pool room. OMG! :embarrassed2:

Norm was a good bar table player. He did eventually run out of money in Baltimore after his stakehorse left and was needing money to get back home. Next time I saw him was in Toledo at the Glass City Open.

I think Jesse would have his hands full with Norm if he is still playing at that level. I asked Josh Brothers if he ever played Norm and he said Norm wouldn't play on a 9ft, only on barbox. I saw Norm at sbe about 5 years ago and he couldn't get a game.

I think Norm won the SBE open 2 yrs in a row, and he'll actually show up for the match.... unlike Jesse.

That was about 10 years ago and he was virtually unbeatable. I watched him for two of those years and he could do no wrong. I think he beat Pat Mcnally in the finals one of those years.

You are dead on JAM (LIKE ALWAYS) Norm had Mike Painter with him for awile at Sonnys plus that backer you are talking about.

Keiths room over at the Regal, that was the partying spot after hours, fun times for sure, but we all must grow up sometimes, man it kind of sucks though!

Norman had to borrow money to make it back home, that is very true, he liked the poker machines too much!

Norm was scheduled to play Bobbie one day. Norm arrived early and started playing the machines, so Don went upstairs, at Ken Ten, and told Bobbie not to come down. Norm lost all his money in the machines.

Dave iam sure Norms backer was smart enough not to let Norm hold any money without him being next to him (because of Norms machine problem), atlease i hope he was!

The funny thing was the backer could beat the machines with the bill, but Don Gibson was no dummy he knew this before hand and would not let the backer anywhere near his machines!

Norm and Vince Means took off a huge score once, Tony Watson maybe, for over 20k. The session ended late night Saturday, between "entertainment" at the room and Sunday NFL they were dead bust by the late game on Sunday..... Solid kids right there..... LOL

Norm may or may not be a lot of things but he is a good, stand up dude.....

I have watched him get 6 people to "put him in" a $20 weekly tourney and dump the first round so he wouldnt have to pay anyone winnings. I.E. $100 for him, $20 to the tourney fund, and 6 guys out $20.

Creative but not my definition of stand up.

I had a very good player with me when i met Norman ( pittburgh Mike Katsaris) i wanted no parts of Mike playing Norm on the bar table, not that Mike didnt have a chance cause he did, but Mike had the worst of it, but Mike didnt want to hear that and keep begging me to put him in against Norm all nite long.

So after awile i got tired and Gave Mike some money and told him you can play anybody but Norman on the little table, iam going out in the car and going to sleep.

After about a few hours of sleep i go back in the pool room and Norm comes up to me and hands me some money and i say whats this for and Norm goes this is half of what Mike lost to me, i say what do you mean i told him to play anybody but you, Norm said yes i heard you tell mike that but he would not stop begging me to play, so we played and i beat him out of 400 and iam giving you half of it back.

Now tell me Norman Wines isnt a stand up guy!

Amen.... Not saying he won't do something shady or the other guy is wrong but Norm has never screwed me out of a nickel and has always been stand up to me and others around me. Seen him do way more right than wrong.

Its a hypothetical question as "Porky" was a very very good player on the bar table. He is from Battle Creek Michigan. I havent seen him in prob 6 years or so. I believe he has had some ups and downs healthwise.
