I like alternate break actually. It breaks up the match and you tend to get alot more tension from the "tennis tie break" type of back and forth.
It CAN make it really hard to impossible for someone to make a comeback like Alex tried to mount late in the match last night though.
There are certainly advantage and disadvantages to it but I think overall it is better to alternate break, win by 2.
That said, the TAR table it now too easy for 8-ball at the pro level. You need the Fatboy rails (not the TAR rails, the Fatboy rails) to make 8-ball viable and have the proper level of challenge (and I said this from the start when TAR was contemplating the switch to standard pockets) without gimping the rules (with take what you make) on a 9-foot.
SVB's 8-ball break is massive and he will make balls of both suits far more often then Efren and get the "choice" way more then Efren who will be far less productive on the break and be forced into "taking what he makes" far more then SVB.
If Efren vs SVB is take what you make then that is basically a spot for SVB, like he needed any more of an advantage then his break already gave him.
Regarding length of match, I personally like these faster sets. So what if the best of the best run out the whole set in 2 hrs instead of 4. I don't feel cheated. Sometimes for me its the opposite and the matches take to long. This was especially the case in the race to 100 matches. I'd hate to lengthen the matches on the new format so in affect it takes the same time as a race to 100 did. That is just too long and going in the wrong direction.
Don't forget this 8 ball match was one of the best matches and probably one of the fastest we will see in the same format. I believe darn few matches will be that fast. I voted for take what you make but on 2nd though you might just add 5 game for a race to 25 and see how that goes. Johnnyt has no clue which way to.
