So this is for the poor lovers of pool cues. These are my sub $150 cues that I have accumulated in the last 6 months, minus the titlist conversion, I think a year and a half on that one. As my grandfather said, "I have champagne tastes with a beer pocket book." All of these "cheap" cues plays great, I don't worry about much and cost less than most people spend on coffee a month.
We will start of with my matching thrift store set of black palm players. Found the sneaky a few months ago for a whopping $7.99 at Salvation Army, found its brother from another mother one piece wrapless black palm at goodwill a few weeks ago for the paltry sum of $4.99. I think it's an Adam, but it doesn't have a weight bolt.
Next we have a set of fullsplice, cortland wrapped true old players cues. Each cue is as stiff as the other, with that dry solid wood feel when the cue hits the ball. The Adam, which I rescued from eBay last week for "$50 make you holla" BIN price made me holla! Plus $15 for shipping too:-(. That's cutting into cue buying territory!! My almost Palmer was lovingly brought home in craddled arms from a downtown pawn shop. Holding it with excitement, looking at the $125 price tag, I looked at the cashier and said "what's your best cash price?" I hear my pool buddy say with disdain "but it's got plastic in the butt, and you want to buy it!?" Well five minutes and four $20 bills later, I walked into the pool hall and played some amazing pool with my new found love.
Lastly, the black sheep of the family, well lets just call them dark instead. Canada's second finest via New Jersey, I'm proud to have recently added, at noon today to be exact, a rosewood on rosewood (now legal in 10 states, read the news) Mohawk. I gotta say, if the points where all equal, had a modern finish and lost the atrocious decal and double wide bumper, this could pass for a real nice cue, probably because it kinda is. I'm pretty sure the rings line all the way up, unlike some of the $$$$$ cues I've seen in my day. I have a bad habit, it's called Craigslist. I try to be a reaponsible user, but I think deep down I recognize I'm an abuser, CA anybody? As I typed in my secret words, CL can be funny that way, I noticed something new, something strange, something that was to be mine. A few texts, a cup o tea and I was on the road. I had read about this obscure brand that has a propensity to warp and needed to see one in the buff. An ex-APA member didn't like bringing in his cue to the bars since he was the player he use to be, decided to part ways with this rare bird. I might have paid near the goin rate for these bad boys, $65, but so be it, sometimes you just gotta roll the dice. Well I must say, it's pretty sporty, kinda like an old D series McDermott with something extra, quite possibly special to it. And the woods are pretty darn purdy too! Lastly is a fine example of a great playing custom cue, that despite the lack of notoriety, David Barber put out a fine hitting cue. So you can feel the points through the finish, and it's missing a wrap, I bought it knowing it was in dire need of a refinish. Ebony graced with Padauk, an extended wrap area and a 3/4" SS joint all compliment each other in a situation where the sum is greater than its individual parts. Stiff and hard hitting, I bring this cue out even though it has no wrap, I can't decide on which color and its not high on the priority list, because it plays so well. We all had a chance to bring this cue home, it was on AZ for a few weeks for a final price reduction of $140 shipped to your door. Obviously, it showed up at mine.
I am hoping to show you that quality is available, can be had for pocket change, and can look good and play well too.
Almost forgot about the business side.
Titlist, Adam, Barber, Mohawk, sneaky, maybe Adam
