WPBL (Bonus Ball) - Hohmann 60 Ball Run on Youtube

Kennedy's stroke pisses me off. It's part of the reason why I stopped. It makes me want to grab a cue, snap it in half, and stab myself in the eyes, every time he shoots.

You're right about that. Tommy has one of the weirdest strokes in pool. But the weirdest thing is, there are tons of perfect stroking players out there who will never play one-tenth as well as he does.

Some random thoughts below:

I just finished watching the entire match. First I watched it on my computer, and then I watched the second half on my Apple TV. Both systems showed the video very clearly and great quality.

I really liked the production. However, I did get confused several times what pockets to shoot at. I know the rules. I think what was happening on some of the shots, the camera was zoomed in tight, and I couldn't see what color jersey the player had, so I didn't know what pocket he was going for. But still, it was fun to watch.

There was some audio in one of the singles matches, I think Jesse vs Tommy, where I think a cameraman was talking to Nathan. Just a couple of sentences but it seemed like it snuck into the feed inadvertently. It was about a wallet or something like that.

One thing with the score, at the end of each game, it didn't go to "30". It stayed for example at "27" if the BB was the winning ball pocketed. That just made it seem incomplete game to me, and was a small pet peeve.

JJ is really good. At one time the other announcer mixes up the players, and says Ralf is a young 20 something yr old (confusing him with Jesse). JJ recovers quickly and says Ralf would be delighted to be called a 20 yr old.

The structure of the game definitely created some wild shots that aren't that common except in 1 pocket.

As the season goes on, I'd like to see more interviews and background info on the players. This could make it more interesting, and help the viewers build a favorite player.

Wow! What a great match!

I hope so much that you are able to bring content like this to the viewers. Either by stream or TV exposure.

It looks like a great game with many offensive and defensive strategies. Double J did a great job with the commentary also.

Thanks, and good luck!

I hope this works out. Good luck on the venture! It's definitely moving forward.

Ha! Just for that, I'm going to go watch Kennedy vs Archer in the US Open that he won. That was an awesome match, underdog wins, and is smiling ear to ear the entire match. A great match imo to watch if you've never seen it before.

I did enjoy the players talking before the match. Ralph said he is going to kick some a ss.

Manny said, "not too many people know who I am but after tonight, you will".

I truly believe that BB needs more of this type of action. The players need to be excited and mix it up with each other.

Thanks for the heads up! Thankfully this bug was actually fixed within 15 minutes of the match ending. It was online of code missing to refresh the display before saving the stats to the database (which takes 2-3 minutes).

Matches 4 and on all have this corrected.

I have tried to keep an open mind about the WPBL, but aftertryingI to watch Friday I became very skeptical. However after watching this I realized I was very wrong. I really dug everything about it. The play, the commentary, the strategy, the production. I love to watch pool and I watch a lot of youtube videos but they rarely hold my attention like this did. I want more. What a shame this wasn't the first impression we got. Also one random thought how long is it going to be before someone figures out a better way to break and shoot. I dont know what that would be, but if you're not required to pocket a ball hitting them hard and splattering them everywhere seems like poor strategy.

Hate it

It was the first match on youtube I've ever shut off after 15min.For me it was God
awful and odd to watch.I find Scotch Doubles bad enough, this is approaching
torture imo.

Couldn't agree more... If you look at pool's "closest cousin" poker, it is like the chicken or the egg question. What came first and drives the sport's popularity, the wild and crazy personalities or the money... Or, is it a combination of both that drove poker's success and gives it sustainable media exposure.

Think of the "cousin pairs" out there between the sports:

Phil Helmuth - Earl Strickland
Chris Moneymaker - Gabe Owen
Gus Hansen - Corey Deuel
Howard Lederer - Mike Davis
Scotty Nguyen - Francisco Bustamante
Daniel Negreanu - Stevie Moore

And it just keeps going, and going, and going.... I'd like to see more "cousin pairs" but ran out of obvious ones.

Let's celebrate the characters we enjoy along with the game we enjoy and have some fun!

Phenomenal match!!!

Watch Scott Frost at 1 hour 18 minutes do a three shot sequence for the game and then a sick karate kick way above his head!

LED lights on the players pockets that light up purple orange or white when its their turn would help a ton. I'm sure it's in the works.

If only this had been the first match with a flawless stream.

Observation: Jeremy Jones said it would be better to shoot first in the captain's choice tie-breaker. There will be scenarios where the first shooter have a tough choice whether to just cinch the bonus ball if there is only a 5% chance for shape and going for the shape greatly lowers the odds of making the bonus ball.

Now if you are shooting second you would know for sure whether to just cinch the ball for the win or go for the shape because you need 5 more points for instance.

Nathan - can you post a pic of the Bonus Ball table and the tight pockets. The standard pic of an attempt to fit two balls in the pocket so people can realize how tight 3 7/8 inch pockets are. Hohlman's run was impressive on such a tight table.

Nice...

This was a much better version of Bonus Ball compared to what I attempted to watch last weekend. It's actually...impressive. Hopefully the "live" version moving forward is ready to go. Good work.

Good luck to the players of Bonus Ball.

Some thoughts:

I really like the Mosconi Cup-style team format.

Jeremy Jones did a great job.

There's a tackiness to the production, with the uniforms and the ball girls. I'd personally prefer a golf or tennis model to an NBA or NFL (i.e., tacky) model, but maybe they know their target audience.

The game itself is the most complicated pool game I've ever seen, and reminds me of snooker more than anything. Complex isn't necessarily a bad thing. Lots of sports have complicated rules, and people love being know-it-alls about the rules. But it's a much tougher sell than, say, 9-ball would have been.

I have to say, I like it a lot more than the initial snippets I've seen and the awful first two days of the free stream. It will still take a little while to know all the rules without having to keep reminding myself of the ball order, etc.

There is a nice mix of shot-making and strategy and I can see the different elements coming into it from the games with which we're more familiar. The camaraderie reminds me of the Mosconi Cup, too, and that's something you don't see with the traditional pool games.

I thought the camera work was excellent--with one exception: Too many times did the camera pan away onto player close-ups when balls were still moving! You need to keep a camera on the table until all balls stop. Remember, making a ball is only part of the shot and the trajectory of the cue ball is really important in the context of the game.

You need to have at least two shot clocks visible to the players. It doesn't come across well when the player turns around, looks up to the sky quizzically, and then gets back down on the shot. Just have clocks on both sides of the arena so checking the time isn't so disruptive.

I missed it, but how were the team names chosen and how were the players picked for each team? It just seems so random since most of the players have nothing to do with "their" city, as far as I know.

All those empty seats don't come across too well, either.

Overall, my opinion has greatly improved.

I can watch 50 nine ball matches and still not see as many EPIC shots as were seen in this match. People love banks and amazing thin cut shots. So many of those banks and thin cuts would have been safeties in nine ball.

You still get brilliant safety play in BB too.

I love nine ball and want both games to live on but bonus ball is really going to add some epic shotmaking to the mix. WOW!

Nathan, please tell me the three pockets will end up lighting up purple orange or white.

It would be soooooo much easier to follow.

I have played 100 games of three pocket bonus ball at least. I watched all of the usa vs toronto matches, all the streams, and this entire match and I STILL struggle to keep track.

Is this coming? It would be HUGE!!!
