Issue with Schon piloted joint fit

I have two Schon butts with identical threads & two shafts with different type of piloted joint. The shaft with shorter version of joint fits perfectly onto both butts, but the longer joint shaft only fits on one butt. On the second butt it is just way too tight (feels like re-threading the brass joint) quarter inch towards the end.

What's odd about this is that I have two sets of joint protector and they both fits perfectly interchangeably.

Anybody got any idea what is going on?

if you haven't done so already eliminate a simple thing and try cleaning that insert and pin.
 
Take it to your cue repairman.
To my eye, the laminated shaft looks to have a wider pilot.
Looks longer too.
If you want both shafts to be interchangeable, the pilot just needs to be taken down a touch.

Thanks for the advice. There's one more question I have before taking it to a repairman. I have measured both pilot joints with a digital caliper yet they appear to have the same diameter - 13.39mm (0.527 inch). If my caliper is accurate then it leaves the possibility to an off-centered joint or pin. I couldn't tell if the joint/pin are centered or not with naked eyes. What is the best way to tell if joint/pin is perfectly centered? Thanks!

Take your calipers and measure the pilot on the both butts and see if there is a difference.
At any rate it doesn't seem like something you can repair yourself.....
I havent seen factory laminated schon shafts, is it genuine?

Th laminated schon shaft is a predator z2 which i recently purchased thru seyberts.com . Seyberts is a very reputable predator dealer. I would assume it is genuine.

The shaft is a predator z2 purchased thru seyberts.com. I would assume it is genuine.
 
It's simple. The one butt has a slightly smaller pilot hole in the steel joint. Get the nipple of the shaft that won.t fit turned down a couple thousandths of an inch. You can see the rub marks on the side of the brass insert. The only thing it will affect is that now the shaft will fit both butts
 
This kinds of reminds me of that old Sesame Street song "one of these things is not like the other...".

This is a first for me,on a couple levels.

I also have never seen a Schon shaft that was laminated and didn't come with a Predator or OB logo.

I've also NEVER seen a Schon shaft that just wouldn't fit another butt. The insert may have been tapped for a much older pin,and may have fit tight on another butt,but would fit eventually,esp when the insert got down into the pilot hole in the butt collar.

As far as the pilot not going into the SS,I've never seen it. It may fit tight,but ALWAYS fits in my experience.

I have 3 Schon butts here,and currently 8 shafts. All shafts fit any of the 3 butts.

The inserts vary as far as fit on the pin,and in some cases the pilot is quite snug,but ALL of them seat correctly.

In your case,is it the insert that is binding on the pin,or in the piloted hole on the butt?

If the pin fit is off,a tap can fix that (rare,but does happen). If the pilot is what's causing the problem,it's still an easy fix in the right hands BUT will certainly void any warranty from Evan.

There is obviously quite a gap in the age of the 2 shafts shown. As Darcy mentioned,perhaps the authenticity of this shaft should be questioned.

Maybe Evan changed something,maybe not. Tommy D.
 
It's a predator that Schon puts their joint in. The predator logo is on the flip side. I've had a few. The pilot can be snug. Give it a little torque (stop if you really feel it is hitting a dead stop, cause something could be wrong of course). Assuming it just needs a few times on and off to wear the pilot in. Mine have all started very snug.

Chuck is correct. The shaft is a predator z2 from seyberts.com. I've tried to report this twice but for whatever reason the mod didn't approve my replies...

Yes, I was able to twist it in with a little force and it is not as tight after a few times on and off. Thanks Chuck for the confirmation.
