My new toy!

How does it work on stainless steel pins or collars? They are also non ferrous. I just tried to pick them up with a magnet.
 
I have not used it on a collar but any type of steel will work. I heated a jointpin for 10 seconds and hit it with an IR thermometer and it was 370deg. the aluminim did heat slightly but only to 104deg after 30seconds.
 
I supose if you were carefull you could reuse one. I use the drill chuck in the tailstock to clamp on the threads and back it out of the cue. The chuck leaves little dents on the threads. I am sure you could clean them up but, pins are so cheap I would just use a new one. Plus how often do you remove a pin that is not bent. Chris.

I love tools and this one is a real keeper but I'm afraid it's a bit more than I'm willing to spend at this time in my life. 20 years and a 100 pins ago sure would sure have made a difference in my opinion but now I could never charge enough to pay for it. I'm certainly glad that you brought this unique tool to my attention though.

I've done some minor research into induction heating with the intention of making a small furnace, and iirc there are different frequencies that are optimal for different material. In general induction heating can be used on any electrical conductor (the magnetic properties of the material are irrelevant), but some are better than others. My guess is that aluminum is more difficult to heat because it has very low electrical and thermal resistivity. Copper might have similar problems. A titanium pin I dunno. The manufacturer should have recomendations for proper use and suitability for various materials.

edited to add "(the magnetic properties of the material are irrelevant)" just in case people are starting to think that induction heating only works with ferro-magnetic materials

Stainless steel contains iron so it is a ferrous metal. It contains other materials also so it is not as magnetic as metals that have more iron in their alloy.

Another interesting tidbit is that even pure iron is pretty much non-magnetic above its Currie temperature. Folks doing heat treating use this tidbit as a measurement method sometimes ... Just in the unlikely case that anyone cares.

I like Dick's philosophy on this tool.
Granted, it's a cool tool and it has been made a little more reasonably priced given Joey's link.
But still, I won't live long enough to justify the cost.
I've got oxy/acetylene, compressed air and an aluminum heat-sheild to go btwn.
I'm already having nightmares of my relatives and the garage sale they'll have in selling off my shop.
"SouthBend Heavy 10? How's $200. BridgePort mill? We'll take $350. The Miller Dial-Arc TIG welder? How's $150?"
I don't even want to think about the wood. Oh well, I won't need it.

Write up an inventory with descriptions / pictures and suggested sale prices. So far I have assisted a couple of widows with their husbands shops .... they had no idea and were quite overwhelmed. And no I did not take any advantage, just saw the situation for what it was and offered to help.
