Unfinished shaft sent to me in error

I ordered a cue and cue case from Seyberts. When it arrived the cue case had an unfinished, packaged shaft in it. I checked to make sure I hadn't ordered it by mistake and that I hadn't been charged for it. No on both counts.

I emailed Seyberts and offered to return it but their reply was basically "don't bother."

There are no manufacturer logos, numbers, etc on either the shaft or the packaging (just a plastic sleeve). The tip is 13mm but the shaft seems pretty thick (untapered I suspect).

I'm not a gear nut, so unless someone identifies this as an unfinished God's Shaft...I'll let it gather dust in my shop.

Thanks.

I don't know the exact purpose, but it must be standard procedure because there was one in the soft case I got from them for my birthday last year. It was basically just a junk shaft. Mine was a soft case so I thought it might be to help it keep its shape during shipping.

"fake" shaft

Yes, I've received several of those over the years when I bought cases. I like to hand them to someone who's given me a shaft to put a tip on. I tell them "I'm sorry, I had to do a little extra work on your shaft". We have a good laugh.

I'm guessing that although it would make sense to ship a shaft you order in the case you order, but they may not actually be handling either themselves, but acting as a middle man for the manufacturer. I expect the shaft will arrive separately.

Lots of people have received them.... they are not good quality shafts.

was this in addition to the cue you ordered?

if so, is the cue in good shape, shaft and butt?

imo that piece of wood looks to be brand x at best.

brand x i believe is what walmart cues are made of.

The reason for this is the tax is higher on cases than cues.

So really you're paying the tax on the shaft and the case is just packaging.

Close =)

The customs agents are wonderful folks and decided cue cases were luggage instead of sporting good equipment.... Guess which one is wayyyyy higher???

SO they now stick a junk shaft in them and viola they cease being luggage.....

I asked John Barton that question earlier this year LOL

Still wondering about the cue you ordered !

I got a shaft blank, basically a tapered dowel (no ferrule, tip, or joint threading) in a case a few years back, and the guy at the local billiard supply told me that China just sends their trash for us to throw away.

I've used it for a lot of handy things, like a long centering device when reassembling my washing machine.

I'm really glad I'm not inclined to make cues, because the wood on the shaft I got doesn't look any worse than some other shafts I have. I'd go broke trying to figure out the differences between junk and quality shaft wood!

The cue is fine. Nothing fancy, just a beginner. Player's HXTE10.

At first glance I thought it was packing support for the case but wondered "why would a hard case need packing support?"

The import/export tax explanation makes a lot of sense.

So, do you think I should list it on ebay as an unfinished, probably Southwest shaft, starting bid of $700?
