Observations from the "Grudge Match"

Johnnyt,
Gene is a top player but the FAVORITE in MOST of the BB tournaments he competes in?

Joey,
Did you get a chance to watch any of the Carom Room event this past weekend? It was an incredible display of BB mastery. Geno didn't fair too well, but his game is certainly respected there.

He certainly wasn't going to be the favorite in that tourney. Great shooting by you this weekend too. I know John and Tom, so I was rooting for them against you. No offense. :)

Any good money matches while you were in town? Or did you scare them all off by dominating Gene earlier in the week?

To me a huge turning point in the match was when Gene had the lead by a couple of games and got straight in down the rail on the 8. I thought he should've made the 8 and then tried to hide the cue ball behind the 10 off the 9, or tried a similar shot to what he did and leave the 8 on the short rail and the cue ball on the other end. Instead he chose a cross bank with no hope of shape on the 9, left a hanger on the 8 and Chris got out. Now I'm by no means saying Gene would've gone on to win but Chris went on his run after this and the whole match looked different than it had to that point. Chris got loose Gene got tight.

In my opinion, he was playing a safety on the 8, not a bank. The 8 was supposed to be hit thinner, so that it would hit the long rail in front of the pocket, and bank back so it landed on the end rail with the CB at the other end of the table.

If he really was playing the bank, well, then you are right, that was a horrible shot choice.

I'm sure that hit on the 8 was just too fat or he'd have had a good safe. It would have helped Gene keep some momentum and perhaps he would have won a few more games but not the set. Chris' s consistency and discipline was going to take this match. Even when the score was well in his favor Chris didn't take any flyers. He played the smart shot every time.

I'll go watch it again, but if I recall, the way he pointed at the pocket, it sure seemed like he was trying to make that eight ball and I immediately thought what the hell is he thinking.
Shooting the eight down the rail and playing safe off the nine behind the ten is a much easier safe if hanging the eight in the corner and selling out is the best he can do otherwise.

Well I've always said that the great players find a way to win when they are not on top of their game. So your statement says volumes as well in still getting to 4th place in that strong field.

Unfortunately, I missed the Caron Room event because I was playing in a BB event this weekend myself.

Chris, maybe you just need a good aiming system for those days when you play bad.
