Earl Strickland - Great Player OR the Greatest Player?

Congratulations to my friend Earl Strickland for winning the Turning Stone Classic Professional Pocket Billiard Tournament.

Earl has proven now for 5 decades that he's a champion and certainly one of the best this game has ever seen. I'm happy for you Earl, it's just a matter of time before Pocket Billiards is back in the public SpotLight again. 'The Game is Our Teacher' - Good Luck in this year's Mosconi Cup.....USA!!!

It may sound like a strange thing to say but he is a better player then most people know. I saw him once at the BCA show when Kim Davenport was showing his target pool. They were playing a few games among the champs who were there. Earl got in and it was a joke. When Earl wanted to he could place the cueball exactly where he wanted almost every-time. He won easily.

When you watch him play 9 ball he may seem to free wheel at times but it is because he likes to play that way. Maybe he is a little lazy who knows, the game comes easy to him. He likes to play fast and has no fear of harder shots. If he has to though he can do anything any other player can do and better. He may very well be the most naturally talented player of his generation and that includes a lot of damn good players.. I don't honestly think he worked as hard at the game as some other players, he didn't have to.
You would know better then me, what is your opinion?

Earl is one player I would never want to play because if he is on you can't beat him and if he is off then well Earl comes out. I love to watch him play though at times its like he was born with the cue in his hand

Shhhhh....it's a secret.....he's a shoe-in this year.....

I want to see earl on the Mosconi cup team. I think he would represent the states well and he is a phenomenal player.

Reading this thread a few have made mention of Earl's "high gear" when he was in his prime. What specific matches could I reference to see this?

it appears the he's BACK and pool will be better for it

Keith and Busta can be included in "greatest ever" conversations

That was during his Meucci days...he was better in the early 90s when he started playing with his white CueTech...I can't find it yet, but it was either the 1987 or 1993 U.S. Open where he seemed unbeatable (I remember both, just can't remember which one)...everyone was racing to see who would get second...I'm pretty sure it was '93. Whenever CJ Wiley completes his documentary on Earl's Million Dollar Challenge win, we'll get to see the real deal...

This is the "Year of Earl" as I jokingly said a few months ago.

opinion please, do you think earl would even agree to being a team member for mosconi if asked?

Earl was the FIRST player selected for this year's Mosconi Cup. ALSO, SKY SPORTS is doing a documentary on Earl that will start an hour before the beginning of this year's Mosconi Cup.

We are ALSO doing a documentary on Earl Strickland and his 11 rack run to win the Million Dollar Challenge (see more at www.cjwiley.com )

This is the "Year of Earl" as I jokingly said a few months ago.....looks like it may actually come true.

For those who don't think Earl worked as hard on his game as others.
I used to work on cues at the Atlanta Pro tournaments in the late 80's and early 90's when Earl was in his prime. While other players were standing around talking between matches, you would usually find Earl on a practice table.

Congrats to you Earl....

You deserve all the praise in the world, and I'm looking forward to you're hoisting of the cup this December, right after your MVP announcement.:D:D:D

I'll be the one screaming the loudest....gaaruunteed.

just on straight pool.

Yes, Earl practiced 8 hours a day for many years....and this was just on straight pool.

In our interview he said his high run was 407....that's pretty good for a "9 Ball Player". ;)

Greatest player

He's the greatest player I have ever seen. He makes shots and solves problems on the table in a way that impresses even other pros. I don't care about his personality or his rants, this man can flat out play some pool. I never doubted he'd win Turning Stone. He was playing far above the other's. He draws a crowd like no other player, except perhaps McCreedy when he played. Entertaining on every level.

Can you provide a link to that press release? Everything I've read says only three guys have been named: JA, SVB and Rodney...in that order. And I don't think he is a favorite with either JA or BH. Would be interesting to have him on the team playing as well as he is but as of this minute I don't know that it's official he's on the team.

Do you have some kind of commercial venture regarding Earl coming up any time soon?

I am starting to wonder the same thing. It seemed like CJ use to add alot to the forum. Now it seems he only comes here to promote a product. Kind of sad really, he could be a very active forum member here.

Efren is the best ever. We never even got to see him in his prime. He as well as many others have stated that he played his best in the 70's. This was before anyone state side had a clue about the man.

as of 3-4 weeks ago earl had not been selected for the mosoni team....that may have changed since that time. this is straight from ja's mouth.

The only thing that man can't do on a pool table consistently is keep his composure. Is he the greatest.......definitely one of the greatest, no doubt.
