Saturday: Semifinals of 2013 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship

Shane breaks and scratches in the side pocket. The crowd moans. Lee comes to the table with ball in hand.

The balls blossomed perfect for an easy runout. Balls dropping in, perfect position. Lee is looking good from here.

Barry Behrman is holding his puppy on the rail. Aw! Anybody who loves animals has a warm heart.

Lee runs out for the win. He yanks one back.

Shane 11, Lee 6.

Thanks JAM for all of the updates. Wish I were at the open. Maybe next year. I'll have a drink with Barry.

Between the two of them, there have been 23 errors committed so far in this match, which is quite uncharacteristic.

Not a good time for Lee to break dry. Nothing drops.

Shane can see the 1 in the corner pocket. He'd like to go two rails and hit the 9, but he gets snookered. A very dangerous shot with tricky position. he gambled on getting straight in on the 2-9 combo, and it didn't work. He'll hit the 2. Where it stops, nobody knows. He studies it long and hard. Runs the clock down. He is on his second 40-second, i.e., an extension. He makes a good hit, misses, and leaves Lee a bankshot on the 2.

If he banks it with high left, he might go one rail and hit the 4, and that will get it. Well, he hit the 3. He is not snookered. He plays a safety. Excellent safety.

Shane is kicking off the left-hand cushion, hoping to get a good hit. He makes a good hit on the 3 and slops the 7 in the side pocket. He can see the 3. Beautiful slice in the corner pocket. Now what? He shoots the 4 and leaves it in the jaw of the pocket. It never went down.

Lee has duck soup. Pockets the 4, but the cueball doesn't land where he wants it to. He snookers Shane, who can't see the 5 ball. Shane masses over the balls, makes a good hit, but he leaves Lee a shot, not an easy shot, but a make-able cut in the corner pocket.

Lee aims and overcuts the ball.

Shane returns to the table. Clock is running out. No extensions. Clocks runs down to 4 seconds. He plays a safety and leaves the cueball on the end rail. Not a good spot to be in for poor Lee.

Lee can see it, hits it, but leaves Shane a duck, 5 in the corner. It's do, re, mi from here, 7, 8, and 9 drop.

Shane 12 and on the hill, Lee 6.

Well, here we go, folks. Shane on the hill. Lee is looking flustered in his chair.

Don't feel bad if you run second, Van-Van.

Shane breaks and pockets the 5 ball. He can't see a clear shot on the 1. An extension is in force. Shane pushes out, leaving the cueball on the end rail, but the 1 is see-able. Lee turns it down. Shane didn't make the 1 and leaves Lee a straight-in 1 shot in the corner pocket.

Lee pockets the 1. He has an easy shot on the 2 in the side. The 3 is down rail. Perfect position on the 3. 4 is up at the other end of the table. The 3 drops, and Lee gets perfect on the 4. He misses it. The crowd groans. He gets lucky, though, and leaves Shane snookered.

Shane makes a good hit, leaves the 4 ball down on the end of the table, with the cueball at the opposite end. Lee leaves Shane tough, making a good hit. It's a back-and-forth battle here of safety play.

The cueball is right on the end rail. Shane overcuts the ball, a "profesional miss." Now Lee comes to the table, another long-and-dirty leave. Shane can see the 4 ball. It's a tough cut, but he can see it. Shane is 5 balls away from the title.

Shane makes the cut and gets perfect on the 6. It's another easy runout. But he misses the 8 ball. The crowd becomes unglued.

Lee comes to the table in shock, thinking it was all over. Lee attemps a safety, but it's not that good. Shane can see this 8 ball. It's a tough cut, but doable. Shane misses it. Nobody can believe it.

Lee plays a great safety again. 8 ball on end rail, cueball opposite rail. Shane returns the safety, but I think Lee can see the 8.

Lee must be feeling the pressure. If he misses it, he loses. Lee made it. 9 ball is tough. Unreal game. Lee wins.

Shane 12, Lee 7.

Lee racks the balls carefully. Breaks the balls, wing ball falls. He can barely see the 1, because the 2 ball is in front of the cueball. Looks like Lee is going to bet the game on this one shot. WOW! He makes a beautiful shot on that 1. I don't know how he did it.

Reach shot on the 2, and he makes it. He can see the 3, quite easily, into the corner pocket. 4 in the side. He shoots the 5 in the corner, draws back for the 7 in the side. Rolls the cueball down for perfect position on the 8 in the corner. Pockets the 9.

The tides are changing. Can Lee pull it off a third time in this Open, coming from behind? Time will tell, folks.

Shane 12, Lee 8.

Accu-stat score: Shane is 829 and Lee is 780.

Lee breaks and pockets the balls. They blossom out perfect like a flower. Lee seems to have caught a second wind. He is shooting at a faster pace, maybe because the runout is easy-peasy. Lee's got life, and he's showing some heart now. He runs out with ease, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

Lee wins three in a row.

Shane 12, Lee 9.

Accu-Stats score, 829 is Shane and 800 is Lee.

Lee breaks, wing ball goes in, has a shot on the 1. He's looking good here if he can hold it together. 1 drops in the corner. He's going for the 2 in the opposite corner. Going for the 4 balls now, with the 6 next. Lee is making this respectable. The 7 ball is next.

I'm so nervous right now. I don't know why. I'm not shooting.

8 goes in and then the 9.

Shane 12, Lee 10.

Shane looks cool as a cucumber in the corner. Doesn't seem to be worried.

Lee racks the balls, taking his time. He looks a little frustrated that he can't get a tight rack. This is important to him at this time of the tournament. Ken Shuman rubs the table with a cloth, hoping to make it easier to get a tight rack. The rack is not cooperating.

Lee finally gets an acceptable rack and breaks. No action. Nothing drops. OMG! Horrible break.

Shane asks for a time out.

Quick question. Obviously you don't get BIH after an illegal break, but what happens if you're hooked?

Edit: Nevermind. Sounds like the incoming player has the option.

Shane returns.

It was announced that the break was illegal. Shane has the option to turn it back, but he doesn't because the 1 ball is an easy straight-in shot in the corner.

The other balls are all clumped in the middle of the table, though. This will be a tough pattern to run out.

Shane makes the 3 in the corner. The ball travels around the table, giving him a nice angle to get to the 5 in the corner.

Shen continues to pocket balls. The balls seem to be working in his favor. He pockets the 6 in the corner. Perfect straight-in shot on the 7. 8 and 9 are laying sweet for him.

Shane takes his time on this 8 ball, and he makes it. Now he looks at the 9. He settles himself, chalks the cue. He makes it. He wins.

Shane is our new U.S. Open 9-Ball Champion, his third Open title.

Shane 13, Lee 10. Shane wins!
