Name This Game contest

At our community center we try to accommodate all players who show up, so we often play games intended for three players.

We began with Cut Throat where the object is to pocket your opponents' balls (if your group is the 1-5, then you're trying to pocket the 6-10 and the 11-15).

We modified Cut Throat slightly to where the object is to pocket your group. First player to pocket his group wins. It works better for us because there's less feeling of "you guys are ganging up on me!"

For lack of a better term we've called it Reverse Cut Throat. Is there an established name for this game?

If not, what name would you give it?

I used to play cut-throat where you make your opponents balls until I moved and started playing with a group of older men and they played where you make your own balls. I enjoyed it better their way, they played if you make a foul you spot a ball. Fouls included not making a good hit, failure to hit a rail, scratch.

I'd call it "whoever goes first wins".

If "Cut Throat" is the game when you are putting OTHER people out, then "SUICIDE" would be the name for shooting your OWN balls out first.

Let's call it "Five-Alive."
As long as any (or all) of the balls from one's predetermined five-ball group are still on the table, one is still "alive" (and kicking).

How's that? :thumbup:

I agree with Pops (RandyG). I'm trying to think of a name with throat or neck, but coming up with nada.

I never played Cut Throat in reverse before.

What did the group of old guys call the game?

Many thanks for the great ideas. I think I'm going to tell them the proper name of the game is 5-ball (Keep It Simple Stupid!)

I've floated the idea of spotting a ball penalty for fouls and I think I'll try again. The problem is that there's no motivation to play safe; if player 1 plays safe and the player 2 fouls, player 3 gets BIH, not me. With a ball spot at least player 1 and 3 benefit. It's also a way to challenge the player with the fewest balls left. (We play BIH behind the headstring since you've only got five balls to pocket)

We played this at the pool room I ran and indeed called it suicide.... Was easy to explain to everyone... It's like cut throat but you shoot your own.... first one to make all 5 wins... fouls indeed required a ball spotting up...... and incoming player plays it where it lies or behind the head string if the prior player scratched...... Had to hit your own ball first and get a rail after contact... Played with friends in college and I had to bank my last 2 balls to make it fair... Was a hoot and adding the banking balls for the better players made it fun even when the guys playing were miss matched.....

If a player has 1 ball left, a preceding player could play him safe. If he couldn't make contact he'd have to spot up a ball and would have 2 balls on the table.

I wouldn't play BIH if a player can't contact his own ball.. In 3 player games fouls should be played as the CB lays.. BIH behind the line only after a CB scratch.

I like the rule that spots up a ball after any foul, and only play BIH behind the headstring after a scratch. I've never played Cut Throat in reverse, but it sounds ok.

We played this game last night. We each paid out $1 per ball to the winner.... Not for balls he pocketed but paid for each ball remaining.

If you had 3 balls remaining, you paid the winner $3. If you had 5 balls remaining you paid him $5. Each winner broke the following rack.
