TAR Idea

I think it would be cool for Justin and TAR to put together an amateur only tournament with the prize being put up money and a match against a pro in a TAR PPV.

You could cover most of the expenses for the tournament with entry money and it would make the tourney especially exciting because only one person takes the prize.

The tourney itself would be popular and gain hype towards the eventual PPV match. And it's got the story of a new star being born already written, just needs a hero to complete it.

I got this idea from MMA and how all the big promotions have a show like 'The Ultimate Fighter' where the winner gets a contact with the promotion.

as with all amateur things in pool....

How do you determine who is an amateur???

I would say no one who has placed in the top 5 of any regional open tourney in the country in the last three years could be eligible.

With other caveats as well.

And you could play in the amateur match only if you have a big head.

The winner gets to play Mike D.

TAR would promote it as Le Grand Tete Egaler or Egaler De Le Grand Tetes, or, Egaler De Le Grand Citrouille Tetes.

Exactly!

It's kinda corny for the purists. And it is probably going to be looked at as a cheap rise to the top by the old timers. But evolution has to start somewhere.

Story lines are what captivates mass people. You could get new people into the game and the ones already playing more excited.

I live in Missouri and they hold a state 9 ball tournament. They had a committee that decided amateur status. It seemed to work well as far as I know. Some impartial guys who know the game and can look into the players.

Love this idea...would be like a small time version of Big Break on the golf channel.

I've never seen it but just looked into it. That's what I'm talking about.

I think if the right player rose to the occasion, he could transcend the holier than thou crowd and the league player crowd and grab the attention of outsiders with the right story.

I watched mid 90s MMA rise from a barely sanctioned freak show to billion dollar industry over the last couple decades. And most of it (ask UFC owners/president) was on the shoulders of 'The Ultimate Fighter'.

Hell Justin, ask Joe Rogan for some assistance on the venture. If you could get the amateur event and the showdown with a pro on ANY cable channel, it could blow pools popularity through the roof.

I don't hate it, but an amatuer good enough to beat a pro, is a pro. there is maybe ONE guy that I can think of that isn't a pro, that could do it, and he use to be a pro/simi-pro.

It's not a horrible Idea, but I just don't see it being cost effective. Need to produce a whole show about it, and have episodes and all that good stuff.

Eitherway, more pool is a good thing. Here's to hoping!

TAR's gotten many requests over the years to do a match with a top pro vs. a lesser known pro, or an amateur,
or a young up'n'coming player, or female players, etc.

Their answer is always the same. Not enough people will pay to watch it, in order to make it cost effective.
They will lose money streaming this.
I'm certainly not gonna pay to watch Shane whomp some talented youngster.

I know you're hoping the tournament itself will generate some hype and get people to buy the PPV,
but when it comes time to get out the wallet, people won't pay to watch a lopsided match
where the outcome is predictable.

I'd enjoy some doubles, something like Shane + Skyler Woodward vs. Johnny and Landon Shuffett,
or two male pros and two female pros. I'd get out my wallet for that. But then the expenses are doubled for TAR.

Let TAR do what it does. If you want it to do something else put up some money and sponsor it, if you want to do that I am sure Justin would provide you an outlet and brand it with the TAR logo. People sound a little silly telling TAR what they ought to do, I will tell you what to do, put your money where your mouth is and sponsor it if you think it will pay if don't have a chance at being profitable then TAR ain't going to do it.

Just my opinion but I think that is how it will go, also who want to see an amateur get BBQ'd by a pro.

I obviously don't have the cash or the pull in the pool world to make something like this happen. And obviously it's got issues that someone far brighter than I would have to figure out.

But I have listened to Justin and Joe Rogan both talk about a TV show for pool. I thought I'd at least throw my $.02 in to the ring. And maybe one of you brighter minds here on AZB could run with it. Besides, it's just the internet. I'm in no way TELLING Justin and TAR what to do here, that would be silly. Just an idea that popped into my head.

And I know there is a superstar out there. Someone who could hang with and possibly beat a pro. I'm not saying I want to watch Shane run a no name out of the building, because he does that to established pros. But you really don't think that there are any young guns out there that could rise to the occasion on a given day and pull one out against a player in their twilight like, oh I dunno, Earl? Tell me that wouldn't make for some TV if some "nobody" came in and gave Earl a game and got in his head a little?

Again, just throwing ideas out there. Not a dis at TAR, or Earl, or anybody else mentioned in this thread.

I cringe every time I see "Proposed TAR" and the like.... While these post are made with good intentions just let Justin do his thing and keep bringing it like he does.

This "unknown vs pro" storyline won't work in pool. It requires a closed "pro" tour and an unknown outsider who can play at that level. In pool, there's nothing stopping an unknown from entering real tournaments. $500 and a dream will get you entry into the US Open. If there were such unknowns who can hang with the world beaters, they already have access to a spot on the biggest stage. They don't need a contrived reality show to get that big break.

TSW: you make the best argument against my idea here. Very good point. Touché.

The rest of you squares need to realize that the "just let them do what they've done, gosh. Look where they've gotten." crowd: Get the **** out of here. You are why pool is going nowhere. The "dance with who brung you" line of thinking is what's got us to where we are in pool and politics and everything else (here in America). And that's what's going to keep us in the status quo.

I like to think that when I reach the pinnacle of pool, there will be something worth getting. Call it a "pot of gold at the end of a rainbow" line of thinking, but that's what motivates me. I can be that champion who rises from the obscure group of misfits to mainstream sensation. Doubt me or the game? Watch us, we'll prove you wrong like both of us have since we've been around.
