All Japan 10 Ball Championship 2013 (21-24Nov2013)

Lol. Johann can play with anyone in the world under tournament conditions. Sure there may be situations that come up rarely where more experience could come in handy, but he can play and beat anyone on any given day. And no, I'm not saying he can come here and beat Shane in a race to 100 on the TAR table.

LOL! It seems like the end of your post has become a caveat whenever anyone extolls the virtues of a great player these days. :grin-square:

Ko's decision to bank the 10-ball does not look like top-flight decision making. Could he at least have tried to put the cue ball somewhere safe in case he missed the bank?

Watching the video, also, it's clear that Chang's scratch on the 10 ball had nothing to do with any talking or distraction. So in the case game, Chang gets to the table twice, and scratches both times. There's a word for that.

One would think if they splitting the pot, but both players played great I enjoyed it a lot specially hill hill

Joe, do you think Johann's ready for the US? i mean, he was a semifinalist on both 2012 and 2013 Japan Open. his break is awesome and he's fought all top Filipino players; beat Mika today and almost took the game against Chang today.

He's been ready.
He's just not allowed to come over. I've been trying to help get him here for a year.
Do you recall me asking you to remove your post about him last year, to try and keep attention off of him.....He's still not going to be able to come over, very unlikely, but he will someday. It's not that he doesn't want to come it's the governments restrictions from his side.

Bustamante told me about this kid like. 2 years ago, said he's their next big star. He was 19 at the time, now he's 21. Lots of upside.

Because that is what has now become America's silly standard of excellence. It's a gaffe game, in that regard. It's just like saying there isn't anyone alive who can beat Thorsten playing 14.1 in a match to 2500. Nothing more than a gaffe, trap game. Now, reduce the numbers of games/points down to the normally accepted ranges, and there are numerous players that can win. What impresses me is the player that consistently wins when playing under normal conditions/format. Any player that dominated before air travel became common place, while making the world smaller, doesn't stand up, IMO. Guys like Earl, Efren and Johnny ushered in what I consider the modern age of pool and dominated. With the inclusion today of the European and Asian MONSTERS, no one player will ever dominate more than a few months in a row, for no more than a couple of years, in events comprised of elite, international talent. (Events that don't have Taiwanese, Philippine, Chinese and Japanese players are NOT and will NEVER be considered an ELITE field)

Ko's performance in the semi-final against Hohmann was top-notch:
- Wet on all 10 breaks (making at least one second-row ball into a side pocket all but once);
- Won 9 of 10 games on his own break;
- Broke and ran 5 out of 10 breaks;
- Errors included two misses in Game 1 (a difficult combo and an easy 3-ball), a miss in Game 11 (a bank), a poor safety in Game 3, and, possibly, a couple of position errors.

my opponent ran 6 racks in a row and in the semis he ran 5 racks in a row.

What were the results of the rodney matches? Just know he went 1-2.

I played in the Japan Open a few years ago and the real issue was the pocket size. Between huge pockets and one foul rules it's really a "crap shoot" for top players. In the quarters my opponent ran 6 racks in a row and in the semis he ran 5 racks in a row.

These rack runs were in a row - they actually ran more than that in the match. I won the quarters 11/10 and the semis 11/9......and then played a bit off in the finals and lost to the Japanese Champion.

Alf Taylor and I actually made a video of this Japan Open and maybe he'll release it one day, or at least some parts of it. The players and fans in Japan are awesome though, the level of respect makes players want to go that extra mile....what a classy event indeed.

right. right. i remember, you sent me a message. i saw johann a couple of months ago racking over and over, practicing his 10-ball break. he may come to the US soon. i'm just not sure if he plays for Puyat or Bugsy promotions.

actually i'm more interested in a TAR match with Shane playing against Ko Pin-Yi or Chang Jung-Lin.:grin-square:

I think Johann is with Bugsy same stable as Ko, Chang.
It is sad that unlike other lucrative sports like NBA, NFL where scouts will hunt down top young talents and sign them up. In pool the young guns have to hunt for their own opportunities and make a living. Mike Takayama gave up pool and played poker instead now to make a living. Another one is the triple junior world champ Wu Yu Lun who had one of best breaks around and was a top money player in Taiwan when he was in his teens. He disappeared from pool as apparently the govt supported him to play snooker not pool probably cos they want to build up more snooker talents. Let us hope same thing does not happen to Johann
