Ever play in a tourney you know you have no business playing in?

You ever play in a big in a big tournament you know you will more than likely be out matched in? Just for the experience or to see where your game is at? I have played in open tourneys and faired pretty well in some. But I was thinking of playing the Music City Open just for the hell of it basically. I've beaten some players that have done well there and by well I mean came in the money not won it. But I've never played in a race to 11 format.

yes

Every tournament I enter. Seriously though I use to play big ones for the experience. Now I do occasionally just for fun. To each his own depending on your money situation.

Karen Corr said she enjoyed playing in the mostly male-dominated tours, like the Joss Tour, because it helped sharpen her skills and kept her in stroke. She used to win quite a few of those tournaments too.

For Karen, playing with the male pros, I think, made her play harder as opposed to playing another lady pro.

Absolutely. I have even amazed myself. Even handicapped tournaments are fun, but an OPEN Tournament is an environment for Zero Defects.

Have a good Time in Nashville... & Good Luck.

The only thing that really keeps me from playing in the Open events like the local Joss tour is the entry fee cost. I don't care if I lose 2 in a row there as long as I play to my ability and hopefully at the higher level of my ability. If the entry fee was $20-30, I'd probably play in the stronger field tournaments, but most of those are $50+.

I see weaker players enter those higher level tournaments all the time at Snookers.

Yes, and will do it again. It might provide a mental highlight reel for you the same way beating a player that is much better than me, 9-4, does every time I think about it.

I do this whenever I can.

I have gained more from these adventures than anything except real lessons.

When I started playing this game I thought that the local heroes were really really good at pool. Then I went to Indianapolis and got a severe 8 ball beating from Brian Groce and got to watch Jeff Beckley play. This gave me a completely new definition of what "good" is. I really appreciated that first experience with real top players.

I've played in every open event within a 4 hour drive that I have been able to since. And lost graciously.

I'm pretty nitty with my money and don't believe in throwing away money just to see where my game is.
I already know where it is. But I will have tried some where there are players several speeds above me.

I just can't do it, if I feel like my chances are truly 0%.
That just won't work with my particular mindset.

Some people might play well knowing there's no pressure since losing is inevitable.
They might get in the money with that mindset.
But I tend to play worse when I feel like a loss is definitely coming and I won't be
in the finals.

I'm not big into blowing money myself. But my wife is going to sponsor me on this one since it's a week before my birthday.

If you have a desire to better your game you owe it to yourself to play in every open event against the best in the world. Forget the $...it can come and go but experiences make you stronger and last a lifetime.

Brendon, could you post the results of Kenny's tourney, If you already have please direct thanks.

Ok you guys have convinced me to try it, thanks.

It's good to get your brains beat in on a pool table, ever hear this ''the game is the preacher''. Good litmus test, good for ones character building. Hopefully you won't have Great players whining as they are beatin ya up. Takes the Fun right out of it.

I'm with you there. For me a $50 entry is a little strong. I do play in the Smoky Mountain Shootout every year but it's for a good cause. It's a $100 entry on the BB
Great tournament

Every Tournament

I don't play much anymore so it seems every tourney I play in is just to get out of the house.

It can weigh on you though, it is nice to shoot with someone close your speed as opposed to way above your speed.

I was thinking about going to the music city open because my bday is Jan 17th, maybe I will see you there.

I'm the poster child for this kind of stuff. But, it's fun and I have learned a lot.
