"Major" event with no promotion

hang-the-9

Just randomly went to OBs Facebook page from a link from my league page, and read this.

"We would like to wish the very best of luck to Allison Fisher who is playing today at 4pm in the 2013 Women's Tournament of Champions at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA." <-- this was on 12/5
"Tomorrow (Friday December 6th) there will be another free event also being filmed for broadcast on ESPN and that is The World Cup of Trick Shots Starting at 3:00 pm"

Springfield MA is about an hour drive from me, I am around tons of pool players several times a week. This is the first I heard that the tournament of champions for women was being held pretty much next to my house.

I would have gone, my son would have gone, several of my pool buddies would have gone.

Pool will never make money if we have to hunt down for information as to where events are. Mosconi Cup, I'm sure hundreds of us wanted to give them money to watch the official stream, but there was no way so we all just watched the free one.

There is probably a few million $$$ extra to be made in pool if the people putting on events actually figure out how to find the people that want to give them money.

I'm now just pissed that I missed this event so close to me because whoever was putting on the event did not let one single pool hall in the area know it was going on. I mean not even a buzz of anyone saying "hey, there is this tournament thing somewhere with women, wonder what it is" anywhere in my area.

shhhhhhh...pool is America's best kept secret.

Marketing is so passe'.

Better to just do something then complain that no one likes to watch pool.

HEY!...Duck Dynasty is on!!!!!!...I need a good nap.

What happened to the casino?

Weren't the ladies and trick shot events always held at the Mohegan Sun casino (in the Wolf's Den) along with the mens Tournament of Champions in the past ?

Yep that is the secret marketing tool. They keep it a secret so no one knows about then after it's all over you start a thread on AZ about it and the marketing genius is revealed!!! I used to go to a pool hall that had an equally genius marketing tool. It was called the note scribbled on a piece of paper and taped to the door trick. It worked equally as well.. One more reason pool businesses are so prosperous, they don't even need customers!

Well, let's add to this that the World Juniors 9-Ball Championship is currently in progress in South Africa. I still can't find anything on the Internet about it, much less the pool media. :(

I was rooting for one of those little guys from Texas. Joey Bourgeois of Baytown, Texas.

I have been having good luck with NYC Grind for the latest pool news. NYC Grind has current coverage of many pool happenings: NYC Grind.

He's a cute young man, isn't he? :smiling-heart:

I see J.P.'s name is on this photo. Maybe the news about this one is forthcoming. ;)

I suspect it is difficult to get pool room owners to allow promoters to promote their events. Any time a pool room customer spends at an event is time he can't spend in the pool room. What's in it for the pool room owner? Nothing; only downside.

It's not like pool room owners have so many customers that they can afford to lose any time.

The best place to promote pool is in pool rooms.... so I wonder if pool room owners frown upon putting up posters for tournaments/exhibitions that are taking place at other, relatively local pool halls for fear of customer migration?

Local pool hall owner's pool world stops at his doors... He/she could probably care less about what's going on at the competition...

I was there. 160 seats and only about 100 seats was filled for the finals. Very sad the APA advertised the event. think they did a poor job at it. the final was Kelly Fisher vs. Ewa with Kelly the victor. There was no commentary like in the past. Mitch Lawrence was there, but he said they were going to add the commentary in later.

If that's true, then fug it...pool deserves to die.

Room owners cooperation

Sadly, it's true, at least in many parts of the country. I've lived in places where the owners actually cooperate...planning events so as not to conflict with others, posting signs about events at other venues. It always seemed to work pretty well...everyone benefited.

But today, at least where I live, the owners see the other owners as enemies, rather than potential friends all trying to promote the game for the benefit of all...

Think of it like pro sports. Sure you want your team to be successful, but if others fail, leagues fold, people quit and everyone loses.

I've seen "proprietors" associations over the years in both bowling and pool, and they seemed to work for the benefit of all members.

Ruthless competition is not the anser...it's actually cooperation!
