Daniel on POV joking about 1 million participants in the tourney today at Hard Times got me thinking about what is the record for the most participants in a pool tournament? Anybody know?

I don't know the answer, but the US Open in some years is probably up there. 256 or so? If you are speaking pro tournaments that is.

Several years ago, I played in the BCA amateur open division that had around 1600 players.

Non league related.....
...Chicago area (St Charles?)....the Willards tournaments....
....always got more than 500

The 2000 US Open had 286

The Miller Lite World Series of Tavern Pool had quite a few folks. I don't have the numbers unfortunately. Maybe CJ Wiley knows, since he was one of the winners.

1988 World Pro Tournament

I believe this one is still the largest "pro" level event...

In 1988, Parica dominated the Japanese circuit, winning eight of the nine tournaments he competed in, and placing 2nd in the other. That same year, he won the World Pro Tournament, the biggest and richest tournament in that time, by beating arch-rival Reyes 9-3 in the finals. The tournament was played in Tokyo and had 900 players. Parica earned the first prize of ¥5M. That year, Parica had total winnings of $289K. (Edit: event might have been in 1989)

There's a really ambitious tournament on schedule for next year in Germany that should set some new participation and attendance records for the ages...
Link: "http://www.billardverbanddeutschland.de/pdf/the_big_shot_konzeption_2013.pdf"]The Big Shot...

30,000 participants
401 Tables
anticipating 60,000 visitors per day!

The 2015 European Open will be taking place at the same time, with 512 participants.

I imagine the "30,000 participants" they are talking about include the German Bundesliga, Landesliga and Regionalliga members. (German national, state & regional league systems) as well as the heavyweights from USA & Asia.

Looks like it will be a single elimination tournament...

For a pro tournament, I played in a tournament in the 70's in Burlington Iowa that had something like 300 players. I would think for sure the most would have to be the World series of tavern pool by Mille lite. There were thousands of players who played in every state. You had to win a qualifier then a regional to advance to the Vegas tournament. I think there were two winners in each state.

I don't know...

But I will say that the First Sunday tourney at Hard times is as tough or tougher than most pro events.

Just to name a few of the players of the 67 in it today, Louis Ulrich, Mika Immonen, Dave Hemmah, Ernesto Dominguez, Ishmael "Morro" Paez. There were tons of world beaters and then you have other strong players like Fach Garcia, Frank "DaBarber", and yours truly...

It is a super tough field for a local Sunday tourney...

It seems that I remember hearing that one of the Caesars events thst Sigel won had a huge field of a thousand players or something.

Several years ago here in the UK I helped run a competition known as the Pub Pool Challenge which was £50,000 to the winner and played over one frame of pool. The first round was held in a pub (16 players) you then played an area final in your town then region and so on. The last 32 players played on Sky Sports TV.

The competition had just under 15,000 participants. I myself was beaten one round before the tv having won around 9 "matches" on the trot.

Firstly....

First off, I didn't even name all of the top players in the tournament, including last night's winner, Santos Sambajon....or Carlo Biado or Jose Parica etc etc...'

Secondly, I didn't, and to not knock any action, won't, name the tons of amatuers that play there regularly who are capable of knocking it off but never travel out of socal, so no one knows them.

Thirdly, I obviously wasn't talking about majors with huge international contingents. I was more referring to regional pro or open events, although technically this isn't an open event since pros have to give a game on the wire in a race to 6.

And lastly, If you think it's so much easier than pro events, try playing in it sometime and see how you do...lol.

Are you referring to the Windy City Open events at Pheasant Run ? They were quite large, and also I could walk to the event :)

57,000 entries on the local level.

Plus I think everybody had to pay some kind of entry fee. I won the regional and got the trip to Vegas. If I remember right I either got some money or a paid expense I am not sure. I know it didn't really cost me anything as long as I stayed at Caesars.

The year I was there It was also the same week as the Holmes Cooney fight and they were walking around at the tournament till Holmes moved from the hotel. He didn't want to schmooz with people any more. On the other hand, I don't think Cooney ever slept he was in the casino all hours flirting with the ladies. I didn't win a dime at the tournament it was a short sudden death format. My wife won $4000 though playing dice with Richie Ambrose on he wing.
