Shane vs. Busty - DCC Bigfoot

We're on a break, Shane started out playing near perfect
but Busty caught up to him. Shane failed to convert with nothing but
a hanging 8 and 10 ball left... he thought a while about the hanger,
went railfirst, got stuck on the rail and put a little fear into his stroke.
He's still on the hill vs. Busty's 8.

Thought I'd share a funny shot from earlier in the rack -
Shane opted to push to a jump shot (no jump cues allowed)
and Shane had been shooting with an extension adding about 5-6 inches to his cue.

He removed this for the jump and Busty asked if that was legal
(thinking you can't have a multi-piece cue that breaks down to a jump cue).
Ken ruled it was OK and Shane made a tremendous jump shot,
but put draw on it and got a really funny reaction.

After a brief forward hop towards the head rail,
the cue ball curved heavily backwards and then ran
perfectly parallel to the rail to scratch.

Shane even laughed because it was such a strange
trickshot-like reaction. Busty joked he shoulda left on the extension.

Update: Shane won it. Busty really handed it to him.
Lots of unforced errors, bad misses, dogged one with the bridge at the end.
Shane was playing super solid at the start, .920 on Accustats at one point,
in a tournament where lots of guys are putting up like .750 - .850.

He didn't have much luck on the break, his customary 2nd row ball and 3-railers
both were a little off, or they'd go but he'd have no look at the 1.

I'm not 100% sure, but I suspect Busty might be the poster child for how weird,
unorthodox mechanics can let you down when you're under pressure.
His wavy sidewinder stroke really hooked violently on one missed open shot.

The other part of it is, of course, there's no second chances and it's pretty good
money in the pool world. Winner was guaranteed 8,000.

Busty misses a duck!!! wow i expected him to loose, but never expected him to play that bad, worst match i have ever watched, the best thing was the trick shot SVB jump and scratch.

Is Shane playing with the extension as a means to get around the jump cues rule? As in, when he takes the extension off, does the cue get shorter than his normal cue (and thus more like a shorter jump cue)?

I think he's using it as a means to deal with the 10 Footer.

Seems to do the job pretty well for him, he just won the bigfoot event. $16k is a nice paycheck.

He really bears down in the finals... that .920 that he allowed to fall off in the semi's...
he kept it throughout the 11-7 finals, and thats with Niels playing outstanding.
Near perfect pool.

It would be foolish to not recognize the benefit of a longer cue on the Bigfoot...especially after earl gotcha with it.

Cant comment on the jump aspect...

That must be why he never got in the Hall of Fame

Tough to argue with that logic :)
I figure his stroke saved him more often than it let him down.

Shane looked a lot more solid vs. Niels, and he had to be.
If Busty is the poster child for weird mechanics that work great,
Niels is the poster child for perfect mechanics that work great.

Shane won, but Niels played good enough that he would have
taken it, if it had been anyone but Shane in the final.

Have you seen the shots Shane missed at the 2013 Mosconi Cup ? If not, pls watch the videos. Busty in his prime would play him for fun using his "weird mechanics".........

The play in all the finals was very good if you don't count how many easy 3' and shorter shots were missed by everyone. Me thinks there was some skidding going on. Johnnyt

I dunno if Busty is really past his prime (the announcers seemed to feel he isn't).
He'd play shane for fun? Well sure, I'd play shane for fun too.
Maybe you meant he'd play shane for money

I'm not bashing him, busty is a champion, he just has goofy mechanics.
You ever look at his stroke from the front?
It goes up and down, side to side, and everywhere else.
But he makes it work and is super consistent with it.

Johnny: can't blame skids or the balls on these, it's just tougher on a ten foot.
I can remember at least 4 of shane's misses and none of them were undercuts.

One was that 10 ball I mentioned, where he got stuck on the rail after trying so hard
to play good shape from the hanging 8, and he just pressure choked and overcut it.

One was after a push, he was left basically near straight in and frozen to the foot rail,
shooting a one ball 2 feet from the hole, and had to drill it and get back down table,
and he overcut it. Just a tough-ass shot.

Another was a super long (over 10ft) thin cut on a ball in the middle of the head rail,
he overcut it and it never reached the pocket.

The third was a poor decision to cut a 2 or 3 ball he fell ultra-thin on,
he shoulda banked or play safe but he tried a 90 degree warp speed cut. It rolled
in the right direction but stopped 4 inches short of the hole.

No. He can play him for money anytime. Even if he is past his prime. Svb is not one of the greats of the game. He has to do a lot more things to become a legend. Efren, Earl and Francisco are the living legends of modern pool.

And you did not say anything obout Shane's performance at the 2013 Mosconi Cup.........

What's to say? Everyone on the American team played below their speed.
Maybe Busty would have done better, but who knows, he's not in it.
You can't single out one guy when everyone on the team
(even the 'living legends') got wrecked.

Van Boening: 0-1 singles, 1-1 doubles
Morris: 0-1 singles, 1-2 doubles
Strickland: 0-1 singles, 0-4 doubles
Archer: 0-2 singles, 0-1 doubles
Hatch: 0-1 singles, 0-3 doubles

I don't think Busty in his prime plays any better than Shane,
and it's easy to compare their records - go to AZ's pages about each player.

In 22 years of playing pro events, Busty has 4 years where he earned over $100,000 in prize money.
In 9 years of playing pro events, SVB has 6 years where he earned over $100,000 in prize money.
And it would be 7 years in a row if he'd made 4k more in 2010.

Unless Shane gets hit by a bus, it's a safe bet he will have earned more titles and money than Busty has.

... Another was a super long (over 10ft) thin cut on a ball in the middle of the head rail ...

Hey, it's a big table, but not that big. The diagonal, corner-to-corner distance on that table is about 10' 5" (measuring from the point where the cushions would meet if they extended to block the corner pockets). From the corner to the center of the opposite short rail is about 9' 7".

Mark Wilson has said on the stream a number of times that the playing surface is 50 square feet (5x10). In fact, the playing surface is 56" x 112", which makes it about 43.6 square feet. [A 9-footer is 50" x 100", or 34.7 sq. ft. So the 10-footer has a playing surface about 25% larger.]
