Cuetecs?

It's the Indian not the arrow. Buying a cuetec won't improve your game; Practice will.

"The Cuetec is not the Teacher"

I guess that is a prime example of success on the table being the player and not the cue.
I own a cuetec, I'll play with it every now and then just because I have it, but I don't like the way it feels. The fiberglass, or acrylic (or whatever) surface of the shaft has never felt as smooth as a wood shaft, but I know people that swear by them and wouldn't play with anything else. I have found that it really doesn't matter which cue or shaft I play with though, I'm still pretty much just a hack.

Does anyone remember the Wilson Sporting Goods Jimmy Conners model tennis racket? It was the first "metal" racket.

Conners won title after title with that racket, so zillions of amateurs bought one. The amateurs soon found out it was the most uncontrollable, worst racket ever made. The ball would go flying anywhere unless your stroke was absolutely perfect.

When asked about it in an interview, Conners said, "The pros on the tour could play with a two-by-four and in wouldn't make any difference."

Wilson Sporting Goods was not happy :D but Conners was telling the truth.

I "think" it was the T-2000, if my memory is correct. I think that was the one he used for the longest, before he changed to something else. He used it LONG after newer and improved rackets were designed.

True. The "javelin" is a Gulassy. Before that he played with a Cuetec for many years. Before that I think a Meucci? In fact, when people talk about companies who do a lot for pool Cuetec should be brought up, with all the people they've sponsored through the years. Earl wasn't always happy with the Cuetecs however, and the sponsorship ended badly.

I think Earl said something like "I'm glad to be done with them, their cues sucked, they held me back
by at least three balls!" ...not a surprising comment from Earl but I think he was exaggerating,
considering all the titles he won with it.

I don't believe a top pro could just step up and win the US Open (or China Open) with a beat-up house cue.
There needs to be a minimum level of quality in a cue or you're gonna run into problems with it.
But I think the newer cuetecs, at least the r360, meet that minimum level.
And anything past that minimum level is mostly just paying for looks, or a brand name.

I believe that given the time to adjust, anyone can play with any cue even if they don't like it. But I believe in the whole package. Looks is important, weight, balance, feel, shaft taper, butt diameter. I do play with a custom but it has everything I want in a cue. It gives me confidence.

There is nothing wrong with a CueTec. They are good shooters. They will last a long time. They do not warp. CueTecs are a quality cue.

I once saw a guy playing off the wall run 6 racks in a tournament. That is to this day the most racks I've seen run at a tournament in person. Saw a guy run 7 in practise once, thats it. And he kept playing at a stellar level in the later games too. Dufferin high-run housecue. He had forgotten his cue at home:rolleyes:, lol how is that even possible? I believe he came second in a good quality field (national championship). I am partial to the high-run housecues myself, but they are cheap. Put a kamui or moori on one of them and who knows? May play better than many customs.

What he said! House cues are just fine. The rest is just personal preference.. little, if anything, imho, to do with actual play. People with money usually spend that money on things they like, hence a $1000+, 20oz piece of wood.

I played for 5 years with a cuetec, also had my high run of 136 with it. During a match I blew the tip off my Schon player, and finished playing with my Cuetec Earl jump break with a LePro on it. Nothing wrong with a Cuetec at all.

I did take it home later and pull the taper back about 4 inches on my lathe. I just liked it better that way....softer hit/personal preference.

have fun,

G.

Mark Tademy used to tell me that nothing hits sweeter than an old one piece house cue...He'd grab one off the wall and put shit on a ball that didn't seem possible with any cue...I think any of the top pro's could grab a wall-a-bushka and shoot well with it from the get go and if they consistently shot with it they would adjust to the cue and shoot their normal speed...

As far as cuetecs go I've had a couple of them and never really cared for the hit..I tried all kinds of different tips on them but never came up with the right feel for me...I havent tied the r360 but it might make a good back up cue for when I go places that I dont want to take my normal player...

The Cuetec R-360 is not fiberglass...it's maple and LD too. Johnnyt

Reminds me of the early 80s, when I saw a very heavy set guy with a beard play some nine ball with Bill Ferguson in Gentlemen's Cue, Reisterstown, Maryland. Bill was a good local player. The heavy set guy was nobody I'd ever seen before, and he grabbed a house cue and possibly missed two shots or so over a couple hours.

It reminded me that it is the indian rather than the arrow, or to put it another way, a skilled golfer with hickory shafts and old forged blades can beat any B+ player with the latest technology, including Titanium, Byzantium, and Unobtanium.

I still have no idea who that guy was, but his skill level looked as good as anyone's, with a crappy house cue.

Moral is, If you are intrigued by Cuetec, probably because Shane is using one, than go ahead and get one, and play it.

Your game will be the same as it was before. It's OK.

I like your thinking. Johnnyt

This is, basically, why I got one. I'm a bit of a Shane fanatic. I was the nerdy kid with the Incredible Hulk lunch box with matching thermos that I never took out of the house. I guess I've never grown out of that. Lol. After I heard that Shane's cue is an off the shelf cue, and after I heard some people on AZB sing their praises I figured why the hell not. I really wasn't expecting it to play as well as it did.

I'm pretty sure you can find one on eBay for $160-$180 and it will probably come with jp's and a case.

I just bought a new R-369 shaft for mine. Nothing wrong with the workmanship on my original...I have a Valley and they are rough on shafts and I'm rough on cues anyway. I paid $140 with free shipping...about what I bought the whole cue right after they came out for. To me, that means people are buying them. Johnnyt
