Rhea the new Chapter, without Gene

Back in the day, I was in the middle of a Sunday 8 ball tourney and in walked a friend of my room mate and me.

He says let's play some $20 8 ball. I say ok and run out the first game and he refuses to pay.

Then a few minutes later, I'm doing this trick shot where a ball is sitting in the far corner and I roll the cb against the rail and throw the cue behind my back and hit it 5 or 6 rails to make the ball in the corner.

He says "I'll bet you $10 that you can't do that shot in 10 tries".

I said "ok, but miscues don't count as a try".

So, I miss it by a hair on the fifth try and he says, "let's bump it to $15".

I agree...

Then on the tenth try, I come a hair from doing it again and he says "You owe me $15".

I replied that as soon as he paid me the twenty he owed me, I'd pay him the 15 I owed him.

Now some background. This guy was 6'5", 280 and was a gun runner for gang bangers in San Bernardino and other areas of the inland empire.

At the time, I offered personal instruction in martial arts and would sometimes use the pool hall during off hours for the instruction.

So he comes up to me and says, "come quarter to 4 I'm going to collect."
I said, "Rich, if you shoot me, you better hope to God you kill me, cause if you don't, I will come back and kill you."

He replies "Oh I'm not gonna shoot you, but you better hope you're as much of a badass as you say you are".

I responded, "I"ve never claimed I was a badass Rich".

I hadn't either, people just assumed it because they would see me giving martial arts instruction and people would ask if they could try and hit me and I would let them.

So at like 20 till 4, my room mate Josh pulls up on his bike and he was always acting as a moderator between me and Rich, so I said, screw this Rich, let's go right now and I start walking for the door.

Scott, (the owner of the pool hall), says take it around back, take it around back.

We get about half way around back and I get into a fighting stance and Rich tries to just lean up and punch me in the head, I duck and then back out into the parking lot. He tries it again and I duck it again.

Then I pull my pants up at the knees to free them up so I can kick freely and Rich says, " go ahead and try to kick me, I'll kick you in the balls".

He tries the punch thing one more time and I duck it again and then Mike, (co owner and brother of Scott), comes running up behind him and grabs him and pulls him away.

That was that and Scott barred him from ever coming back to the pool hall again.

Later he ended up getting caught with illegal firearms in the back of his camaro and went to county for 18 months or so. That was the last I heard about him.

My nephew trained with one of the more serious Karate instructors and "earned" a 2nd degree black belt. I watched him spar and he was quick, powerful and could be deadly. He was a non-violent person who would never start a fight. In fact, he had lots of friends and was just a nice respectful kid (to everyone). Everyone knew better than to mess with him because he could really be something you didn't want to mess with.

After training most of his young life, he went to a party with friends. At this time, he was about 16-17 years old and he walked outside by himself and someone hit him in the back of the head with a 2 x 4 or baseball bat. He was hospitalized but quit training and got away from Karate altogether. We theorized that whoever hit him was simply jealous of his martial arts capabilities and wanted to "prove" that he wasn't all that much of a bad ass. The low life POS's never were caught and no one ever told who did it. My nephew didn't drink, smoke or cuss; a real all-around good guy. Never got into arguments and didn't at the party either. He figured that someone just wasn't man enough to confront him face to face so they attacked him when he least expected it.

There are cowards everywhere, people keying other people's cars, defacing businesses property, shooting people in the back, hitting people over the head with deadly blunt instruments etc. These cowards sometimes get up the courage to ambush unsuspecting people. It's sad really, when a conversation could have fixed whatever ailed them. It's what happened to Mike Surber. www.mikesurber.com

Samiel is a good dude.
He loves all the OB girls players. He supports the tour girls like no other.

AMEN to that Samiel is a great dude. He called me when he had picked up Rhea and was on the way to Volcanos.Rhea sounds level-headed. I wished her luck.

Yeah...

I was much different when I was younger...

I will still fight if I have to, but only if absolutely necessary. There are POSs everywhere that will try and hit you in the back...

Back when I gave private instruction I was teaching some students how to deal with multiple assailants and I said one of the first rules of fighting multiple assailants is to hit the guy you can't see first cause he is the most likely to get the courage to attack you first.

They decided to get up and start sparring me three against one, without warning. Without thinking about it, I punched backwards towards one of the twins and popped him in the nose, not hard, but enough to draw blood.

we stopped everything and after I apologized profusely, I told them to never try and surprise me like that again.

I swear JoeyA I really think there is a parallel universe. When I was 17 yo (living in West Monroe LA -turning 50 this year) I had just gotten my 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo, Wing Chun Kung fu and Hapkido... ( belts and certificates still in my attic ...lol) This was right after I had stopped racing MotoX for Team Yamaha. I had won a couple of National championships as an expert minibike rider and was getting ready for college. One friday night, on a whim, I went to a party with some friends about the same age -1 guy I knew pretty well but the 2 others I didn't... on the way one said that he had a friend that wanted to catch a ride as well. So we stopped to pick that person as well... SHE... was nothing 'that special to look at' or anything and I actually never said 2 words to her as I didn't know anyone else in the car or their friendship with her. We get to the party and a couple of hours go by then all of a sudden some HUGE guy (like 23 yo muscle head football jock) walks up to one of the guys that road with us to the party and DRILLS this kid... KO'ed on the spot - 1 punch- out.. I thought guy DUDE WTF did this guy do to you??... he was really nice guy its seemed... Blood everywhere -this kid was out... like I said KOed one punch (Broke Jaw/nose- face collapsed and swelling). As people was helping him get to a car to go to the hospital some commotion was happening in the front room of this house. I go to tell my friend 'hey look...we're leaving like right NOW'. When I notice this guy coming around the corner bleeding from his nose and mouth as well...It was one of the other guys (that I didn't know) who had ridden with us to this party. I looked at my friend (the driver) and said what the hell is going on with these to guys? WE NEED TO LEAVE Like RIGHT NOW... as I turned to leave for the car out of nowhere the 'Stars came out'. I didn't go down to the ground but my right eye immediately closed shut and I had no vision in my right eye and severely blurred vision in my left eye. This resulted in a broken cheek bone and a detached retina in my right eye. This was a career ending injury for any field requiring stereoscopic vision. I had to go to Houston Tx to have to best Ocular Surgeon save my right eye.

Turns out this Muscle Guy was drunk and the Girl that we picked up was his recent X-girlfriend... He had heard that we (the 4 guys) were there at this party to 'rough him up' over this girl and that there was a' karate expert ' there to give him is money's worth. Well this was all 'news to me' some 6 days later as my friends and family put out the word on this guy that what he had coming would pale in comparison to what he had done. After this incident I really got focused on college and really put down my Martial Arts as I had learned what I needed from 'being associated'. I have a concealed carry now but back then (and at that age) no one was that suspect- at least to me...Young and dumb. Everyone that I hung around with (I thought) knew who "I was" and understood MY values. Well.... that's obliviously NOT the real world. I can relate to your nephew as I lived it... right there in North Louisiana.

Always now looking over my shoulder to avoid this situation (and trying to avoid a Mike Suber situation ).... Mr Ronnie Lockwood (the Drunk Muscle Dude at the party) magically found religion about the age of 27 and because an actual minister. I survived as did the other guys and he (Ronnie) avoided what he had coming to him. I'd say being a 'Man of the Cloth' as a career is punishment enough for his adolescent transgression under the influence of alcohol... But really there does seem to be a parallel universe at times. I played with Mike at Derby (warming up upstairs) the year he died. Hopefully your nephew recovered. Btw Ray introduced me to you at a White Diamond Tourny a couple of years ago. Oh and I'll see you in Denver. :)

Fifty three players at the OBcues tour this weekend. Lost the first round seven to six. Gonna be tough to climb back to the top. These tables play strange. Going to Austin/Round Rock tomorrow night after the Rusty's tournament. Oh my first match was with Julie Stephenson.

sort of.

Jaden, you mean like Jack Reacher. I know its just a movie but there is a bit of truth to what he mentions to the first aggressor.

If you have the ability to take out the first guy hard and fast, the rest aren't usually too enthusiastic to receive the same treatment.

Sort of. The guy who attacks first isn't really likely to be the guy that's most obviously aggressive.

The person that thinks he's taking the least risk is likely to attack first. Usually that's the guy who you can't see. That's why it's good sometimes to have a wall at your back or some other obstruction, IF it's impossible to run away even without it at your back.

Made it to the final 16, my match starts at 10am tomorrow, gotta play Chris Fields.

Chris Wilmeth sold me a new Kamui supersoft before I let Oklahoma. Between matches today I paid to get it installed on my Z2 predator shaft. Last one I put on that shaft was in Whitehall Ohio by Dave.

Herman the German showed up to hang out at Rusty's today.
My new road partner Kim Pierce was there with Emma Stewart and Celeste.

Emma is still in the winners bracket and plays Jennifer Kraber at 11am.

Tell us about Samiel. What is Samiel in to?? What else do you do besides pool? Do you go to movies sometimes?? Do you play cards? Do you like to party-drink and get toasted?

Samuel is a nice guy, not sure what he is into.

I am into chicks who play pool, movies about pool, music with lyrics about shooting pool, books about pool, matching up, or playing in pool tournaments, and when I'm not doing any of that I like to travel, sleep, meet other pool players, practice pool, watch one pocket matches, check Facebook, or eat cheap food.

Speaking of travelling I just learned about Mega bus from Celeste. Apparently it is an affordable way to travel at a fraction of the cost of Greyhound.

That's good kiddo. We have similar interests. I sent you a friend request on facebook the other day and you clicked it right away, so I am keeping up with you. One pocket is fascinating, isn't it? I was also reading a bit about Megabus, so please rate it when-if you use them. later.
