The Last Money Match - Grady Mathews vs John Henderson - Video

Thanks Lenny! It's a treat to watch these two going at each other! I don't think I've ever watched Grady play that I didn't learn something new. I enjoy seeing John play too.

You do come up with some dandy's from time to time.

Thanks for this one bro....

I have commented on this before, but Grady was not Grady here. When he was a top player, he used to give me 8/6 and get the money.

As an older player myself, I understand his reasons for setting up this game. You are trying to stay competitive and keep playing the game you love. You can see in the video he was starting to have some physical problems. I was not aware of the extent of this until the match. He wanted to set up another match after we played this one and I declined.

I am very lucky that age has been kind to me and my pool game, but I was never anywhere near the player Grady was until we got old.

Check out the sick kick bank off the break at 22 minutes in. That's one of the better second shots I've ever seen.

Did Grady always have that kind of swagger at the table like he's always mad at the balls? It's my first time ever seeing him. Plays very quick too.

I remember watching this ... it was a great match, even though you could tell Grady wasn't executing what his mind was seeing. Still... things can be learned here; even if they weren't pulled off exactly, the intent is the big instruction. :)

Thanks for posting this Lenny!

kudos to you, Mr. Henderson...

Thank you, and thanks to Mr. Lenny for this study in one pocket competition.

My guess is Grady was in denial about his illness and the state of his pool game at that point. I didn't know him personally but I believe his comments after the match were a reflection more of his health than of anything else and I doubt he would have said that in better days.

You are all welcome for the video. I know some would rather not remember Grady this way but it is still reality. I liked Grady and in the short amount of time I was around him we had fun and shared some good stories with one another. I liked how when we were in a hotel room and he got changed and chose to tell me how he was not gay so don't worry, haha. RIP Grady.

I remember a similar post regarding a video of Irving Crane in his later years when he was no longer playing pro level pool but I disagree in both cases.

Even if they weren't hitting them as straight as they used to, you can still learn from their thought process while at the table. I'm glad he posted it.

What surprised me what not the execution, but the shot selection. I had always thought that the pocketing skills would go away, but Grady shot a lot of the wrong shots.

Examples would be him shooting a spot shot softly and it left you an easy cross bank.
