If you buy anything from ebay you need to read this

This question is for Brian,Joe, Kevin and any other experienced traders,
I don't have a credit card. How can I protect myself on an ebay purchase?
If you don't want to post in the thread,a PM is fine.Thanks.
Marc

Only buy within driving distance and get a 32oz Easton.

Sneak up on them and unload.

I see you're in Florida so this last part is very important. :)

You have to get a Credit, not a Debit, Card. MC, VISA and AmEx all guarantee you 100% satisfaction on any online purchase. When you call in (or file online) a dispute on a payment to PayPal, its a done deal, and PayPal will NEVER fight those entities.

Thanks Kevin,Thanks Joe. I am screwed without a CC on this type of scam. This can be useful to others here too.

If you don't have a credit card because of poor credit, go get one secured by cash. if you are going to buy online, its essential.

For example, I had a situation where I bought a sterling silver set ($3k) and they seller sent me a box of silverplated trash. I contacted him and he ignored me so I called AmEx. Since it was complicated by the fact that the guy actually sent me something, I called in the dispute rather than just filing online. The clerk was going through her checklist of questions when I mentioned the payment was made to PayPal, she laughed and asked why i didn't say that to begin with and settled my dispute on the spot. A few days later I got a form email from eBay saying they would prefer it if next time I had a dispute i would try out their process. Done deal.

Contrast that with all the suggestions you see here on AZ, police, find the guy, postal inspectors, anybody know the guy?, etc, all this stuff that doesn't work. One phone call and done.

PayPal's and eBay's "investigation" is COMPLETELY about locating their finacial liability and their "rulings" will always be those that cost the Corporation nothing. Those that expect anything else need a dose of reality. We can make them out to be the bad guy because if this, but Corporate responsibility is always to profitability. There are no stock holder meetings that start with a listing of all the good deeds the corporation performed

I avoid this situation completely by not doing business with E Bay or Paypal. USPS is getting pretty close to my do not do business with as well. Most of what the USPS delivers goes straight to the recycle bin anyway...

Its a good way to force you into a savings account and a way to rebuild your credit while you are at it.

They pay to 3rd place but really the best you can hope for is to cover expenses.

Marc hello. If you have a debit card it works like a credit card. If you buy something and pay with your debit card, and you never get the item you paid for with your debit card. You contact your bank where you card is from. They will work to get your money back. I have always paid through PayPal using my debit card. I never got the shirts I ordered, PayPal said since I used my card they would give me my money back. Thank God I have never had a problem getting my money back from PayPal. Good luck Marc.

I'm glad it worked for you in your instance. Debit cards are decidedly NOT credit cards and don't offer anywhere near the same protections (even if they have a CC logo on them).

Ebay is like the good the bad and the ugly(not in that order of course). I've scored awesome stuff for dirt cheap, payed way too much for garbage, and been fortunate enough to find some real douchebag sellers. I will definately be getting a credit card, thanks for the heads up! I just bought something about two weeks ago and have heard hide nor hair from the seller, place is like a magnet for shady business.

I'd be taking a few days off from work, ROAD TRIP!

While you are on the road, burning gas and your time (if you really would attempt to chase the guy down). I'm doing what I would be doing, on to the next, that old situation being a thing of the past that cost me nothing but a few mouse clicks or one phone call.

But your way is probably better.

Any business conducted sight-unseen is going to be rife with scams. I mean watch the for sale forum here at AZ for a month or two and you will see it all. The thing is to learn the ins and outs, and then conduct business risk-free. Online commerce is the way of the future and a huge boon for credit card companies. The only way they can perform in that marketplace is to offer their customers complete satisfaction, which they do.

What to do

For anyone that cares: A seller sent me an empty packageand when I told them that there must be a mistake they said: prove it. I offered to provide Digital video of the entire delivery and the opening of the package ( I had them send the item to my office which happens to be in the building that is the headquarters of Goldman Sachs and Royal Bank of Canada, it is one of the most secure buildings in Chicago ) Ebay just ruled in their favor, didn't bother to contact me and ignored every attempt to show proof, I even had a signed affidavit from our building's security which scans and X-rays every item before it is delivered. This should concern anyone that purchases high value cues from Ebay. Side note- I have been an Ebay member since 1998 and have 100% feedback, never had a problem or even had to leave negative feedback for anyone. Luckily for me it was for a $75 bottle of skin cream ( for my Fiance) and not the cue that I purchased for $2200 the week earlier. Using their logic, what's to stop any scammer from selling an expensive cue or watch and then shipping them a broomstick or rocks? How many of you actually video tape the process when you open you package? How many of you have the postman standing there when you open your box? I had both and was still ruled against, Sorry if this ties up the this thread but I think it's pretty relevent and I know a lot of AZ'ers do buy high dollar cues from them.

Ryan

Pay with a postal Money Order. Screw Ebay. They Let the seller explain themselves in Federal Court. You need the seller's phone number and address. Contact the local Post Master..Mail Fraud.
Good Luck,
Nick :)

No I made the mistake of using my debit card, I won't make that mistake again

Cheap lesson really, but yeah, its gotta be your credit card. If it was, you would be past this and done with it. All the other "solutions" involve nothing but hassle and risk.

Thanks for all the good advice, in hindsight I should have used my credit card. It was just coincedence that everything was captured on video but i guess thats just not enough these days. I just figured that the only benefit of working in a secure building and office where everything was monitored would be that if I was ever scammed then I could provide irrefutable proof with digital video. Apparently that is not the case. You would think that walking through metal detectors and X-raying everything in your pockets just to get past the lobby would have some benefit but nope, just an everyday hassle. Its like going through TSA every day. Thanks again and buyer beware- use a credit card.

You cant.
The minute your money leaves a bank its gone, like western union and you will have no recourse except Paypal. They only side with sellers, where their bread is buttered.
