He's in survival mode. People get intense when they are cornered.
Ideologist...no, SVB is the only American pro getting substancially compensated (likely $100k+ just in salary). Add to that his tournament, exhibition (TAR)), and gambling winnings, and he is far from "survival mode"! He just plays THAT well!

You think Shane gets $100k+ in just salary? His sponsors take care of him, but not that good.
He is FAR from survival mode though. In my eyes, it's Shane vs. The Field in every tourney he enters in the U.S. In the U.S., where he is comfortable, he is the best player in the world. Not just the TAR studio, but anywhere where he can comfortably navigate his surroundings, eat well, etc. I don't think there is anyone better. He seems to have accepted this, and just knows he can't be beat.
The real crazy part that some people have trouble accepting, HE'S STILL GETTING BETTER. I think this might be the year for a world title, if not I'm thinking for sure in the next 3 years.
The Kid is going to go down as one of the greatest of all time, IMO.
Shane makes 100k plus a year easily in tournament winnings and that's without his sponsors taking care of him.
Oh, I dont mean survival because he's in danger of losing. I just meant that he lost a large number of available pro events and TAR revenue opportunities. Now he HAS to win to stay comfortable like he has.

I don't call tournament winnings salary. Salary to me is what shows up regardless of wins. I know Shane clears that in tourney wins.
Unless things changed a bunch recently he isn't making $100k from sponsors... I think Cuetec was paying Earl that back in the day but they are/were paying Shane considerably less.....
They pay most of his tournament entries fees and travel I think. Johnnyt

This is true. But it did not prevent the western world from losing its A$$ on it just a few short years ago tanking the entire US/Global financial system along with it. What short memories we have...

I wouldn't buy land to flip. I'd buy land to keep. Especially land with a water source and cheap property tax attached.

Yes, regrettably, it was a witch's brew of unsupported debt levels (i.e. bad debt), falling land/real estate values and irresponsible use of leverage mixed with hubris and a general public that wanted to believe that they could speculate themselves to riches that caused things to go into the sh$tter.
Anyway, back on topic. SVB was the man, is the man, and will likely remain the man in the US and likely the global pool world for a good long while. I am in no position to judge due to my juvenescence, but I will hazard a guess that when the dust settles and folks have time to reflect on the totality of his career and impact in cue sports, that history will weigh him in as one of the best ever. Certainly the best of my generation (not so sure that I can claim him as my generation, as I am 36 and I don't know how many winters he has yet seen...).
To sum up, go SVB! Win 'em all. You make it look so easy I just want to quit playing and use my cues as kindling...
Salary is a tricky thing with pro pool players. Anything that they do to make money is "salary" really.
It's not like being on "salary" at a job where you get paid yearly instead of hourly.
Maybe if we call it "income" instead of "salary" it's more semantically correct.
A bit like a plow truck driver, they may not have a "salary" but get income per driveway they hit.
About betting on what Shane can or can't do, I love this quote by someone, don't know who said this exactly if it was on here or in a stream chat or what. "Don't bet against Shane or a Filipino. If Shane plays a Filipino, hold on to your money and enjoy the show."
