Tip maintenance

Hi
I use an elk master tip and I see a lot of people complain about the fact it needs a lot of maintenance to stay in top shape. I personally use this tool and I do the following:
I use the top shaper in order to create the top shape of the tip and then I trim the side of the tip.
There is something I forgot?

The Elkmaster is a soft tip that will mushroom and flatten after some play. Maybe someone would suggest to the installer that they try out a tip press

Use the shaper if you must, although this will be grinding your tip away. It is best to shape the tip *once* with a very sharp utility blade on a lathe. Chalking will keep the tip in shape after that. If you get any glazing, the Kamui Gator Grip tool is excellent, as it allows you to put a nice surface on the tip without removing any material (when used properly).

As for the legs on that thing for burnishing...NEVER do that!!! It is the worst thing you could ever do to a tip. You are putting tons of lateral force on the tip just ripping it apart. You might as well junk a layered tip after you destroy it with that. There is one like it called "The Ultimate Tip Tool"...pretty much the ultimate tip destroyer. It definitely keeps the tip guys in business though.

Sorry to be harsh, but that type of tip wrecker is a pet peeve of mine. Find a good tip guy to shape your tips properly on the lathe.

I agree with this totally!! The ultimate tip tool is a tip killer especially if you use the burnisher. Instead now I'd get my buddy with a q lathe to shape it and I just use 220 grit sandpaper to give a light scuff to allow it to take chalk. My tips last wayyyyy longer meow.

I can tell you one thing for sure. That little tip tool is the worlds worst tool.

There is not one feature on the tool that is good for anything.

The sand paper grit in it has to be about 80. You are shaping and scuffing leather, not re bar.

One uses 80 grit to sand metal in other words. That will FK your tip, scratch your ferrule and twist the tip off your ferrule if you use the burnisher.

At the very least, use a Willards shaper and a little curved shaper with 120 or 150 grit paper in it.

I have found several of the Ultimate Tip Tools left at the hall. I toss em all in the garbage can, where they belong.

thank you guys for the advices on not using the compressor, I'll keep it in mind!
Anyway I don't use that tool that often, I only use it when I see the tip is getting too flat and when is mushrooming. I only use the side trimmer, the top shaper ( rarely) and the diamond surface ( to tap the tip). I use the tip very carefully. Keep in mind i use an elkmaster tip and it needs more maintenance than an harder tip

Could one not take out the 80-grit sandpaper in the tip tool, and glue in some 120 or 150 grit sandpaper instead?

Right you are...........

I had a guy that always played LePro tips. He used one of those nasty little tools. He was always grinding away on his tip after every game. He would grind the tip down to the ferrule in a week. I turned him on to Ultra Skin tips and convinced him to throw away the nasty little grinder. He now uses a small piece of 400 sand paper and then only about once a week. His tips last about 6-8 weeks and he plays every day.........

Those tools are the worst thing ever invented.
