11+ years later I get my South West

That is really a shame not to have your wood combo after the long wait.
Stupid question: you wanted a wrapless Cue and going now with linen, why?

That is a long time to wait for a plain and common everyday looking cue stick............ I don't see anything special there except the name.............

but that's just me............

Thanks for the compliments. Like I stated, I was disappointed not being able to have ebony. Mainly because that is what I requested from day one. I didn't go wrapless because I didn't want anymore invested in a cue I was uncertain about. I now wish I had gone wrapless with a&b rings. I do think the cue turned out well.

At this point I don't know if I'll keep it or sell it. I haven't played pool in years now and do have a Jim Buss sneakey to use. Unfortunately I had a South West I played with and blamed my stroke on it. The cue was traded for 2 cues I won't mention. I still wish I had it. I also had a Franklin with an ebony nosepiece that I had refinished at South West with 2 new shafts. I never played with it after the refinish. I wish I never had it refinished and just had it rewrapped with 2 new shafts. I really liked the hit on that cue. It seems that I like the hit of maple or ebony for nosepieces. I had another makers cocobolo nosepiece and wasn't a fan of the feel of the cocobolo.

Still wish I had the early JossWest BEM merry widow I once owned. I actually got Billy Stroud to refinish it and build 2 new shafts for it. That cue played awesome, but I was so pissed at Stroud for all the bullshit involved with dealing with him I traded it for the Franklin. Should have kept it and just bought the Franklin. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.

Awesome SW and great choice on the wood combo. I have one with the same wood combo and I think the veneers are the same, too. Mine weighs 19.1oz. and is the best SW player that I've owned. They've all played great, but this one is the best. Love the look of the woods, stunning.

Congrats

im sure southwest's hit is phenomenal, but 11 years, for a simple design, is outrageous. why such a long wait?? is his drying time long, his wood curing?? im not knocking them at all, i only hear great things, just curious to know why his wait list is so long. I was on tascarellas list and i got called in a year and a half, by than i had no money bc i was laid off at the time, but still 2 years is understandable.

The wait is due to the demand of South West cues, after selling my first one in 1986 I called to order one and was told 2yrs then,Szamboti didn't even have that long of a wait then.

Kim some people think a Ferrari is plain for an exotic car...but it's still a Ferrari

To the OP that is a stunning combo,I'm disappointed that Ebony is no longer available and am trying to think of a new combo as my names is coming up soon.

I don't want to insult anyone but for 11 years and the cost, I would expect to see something exceptional.............. and I just don't see it..... I don't think there are any special materials used or special construction techniques or any unique aspects of Southwest cues............... they are just an old name that draws people......... for what reason........... well it escapes me...........

If you just want to play the flipper game for a profit....... feel free.... but if you want a great playing cue then there are many cue makers that can make you an excellent cue in less than a year and for a lot less money............

Kim..

Thanks! I really like the combo myself. I was unsure and now wish I had just added the a/b rings and went wrapless. Had I done that, there would be no question about selling it.

As far as woods Alves nose piece and Pau Ferro points w/ white, orange or blue or green: brown might look really good(middle color) and black. I'm a big fan of BEM nosepiece's, even though they're not as popular . I really liked my BEM w/cocobolo points. My game was at its best with that cue. I should have never sold it! The Franklin w/ ebony nose piece played really well also. I wasn't a big fan of the BEM points it had though. If I could get Ebony/ebony I'd be really happy. I once had my eyes on a Scruggs that was ebony/ebony. The one cue that truly got away.

As far as the nay sayers...It is what it is. South West earned a name for themselves. They have a unique hit and are well constructed. Not to mention their simple beautiful design.

Sorry Kim to burst your bubble but a lot of us don't flip em,we play with them.Maybe when you've been making exceptional cues for 40yrs yours will be as popular.

Very poor form for cuemakers to bash other makers...

Who exactly is the cue maker at Southwest? Is it Laurie? I've asked this question a few times, have never received an answer.

They all do work,it was Jerry's dream that anybody in the shop could preform all aspects of cue making so his work could continue,he achieved that goal before his untimely parting.

Oh and Kim I do agree that there are other cue makers that produce great cues and for a lot less money,if you look on facebook at Ryan's page(Rat cues) you will see I just posted how amazed I am with his work, perfection. When you produce cues with that level of work your cue may become that highly regarded also.

Arthur Mac Donald, Just had a chance to play with one of your cues, your work is superb, as good as ANY BODY'S and the cue played incredible! You are truly one of the best cue makers out there.

Yeah...ain't that the truth!

After looking at this thing for a few days I think it would look better with a predominately black wrap. What do you think?

Wow!! Nice choices of woods. I'm in the process of trading a Ginacue for a SW with Goncalo Alves and Ebony points and no veneers. I'm thinking it's gonna hit like a powerhouse and it looks like yours will be a powerhouse as well. VERY NICE :)

I gave the cue a test drive last night, hit a rack of balls and put it away. Unfortunately in my anger over not getting the woods I wanted. it was ordered with a wrap. I'm just a wrappless guy. Jim Buss sneakey to remain my cue.
