2014 World 9-Ball Championship

NO ONE wants to go to Taiwan and gamble there! PERIOD! EXCLAMATION POINT! FINIS! Not even the best Filipinos are interested in making that short trip for action. I know because I've asked them about it. I love Shane but they would eat him alive and he knows it too. I don't care if we are talking about a Race to 25, 50 or 100, WINNER BREAKS! That myth about Shane's invincibility would be broken fast. It's one thing to play one tough player but to have to play several in a row is an impossibility for anyone. And that's a fact Jack!

Shane spent about a week playing in Bangkok before flying to Qatar. He did just fine according to the posts from someone who was there.

I realized about 20 minutes later that I was thinking of the wrong country.

Which part of Taiwan is Bangkok in?

Actually Shane played and beat some world-class players while he was in Bangkok, including Cocoy Villafuerte and Daz.

All I know is that I'm looking forward to the race to 25 match with SVB vs Ko. That should be an exciting match up playing on SVB's de facto home.

I guess the Chinese and Taipei population arent that interested in watching pool? The chat moderator said there was around 2-2.5K viewers at any moment. I figure with a population of 1bil plus in China and with so many of their players playing, it would be more viewers than that on a free TV quality live stream.

You have to understand that most of these matches are being played during working hours in Taiwan and China. On another note, there is the language barrier. Sadly, I can imagine my fellow Taiwanese brothers having trouble setting up the stream on their computers. ANOTHER reason is that Taiwan is a lot more mobile-oriented these days and the number of people with a quality PC and fast internet connection is being replaced by mobile phones and tablets.

an estimated 1000 places with pool tables AND house pros

I've played in Taiwan before and at the time there were an estimated 1000 places with pool tables AND house pros. I wasn't crazy about their equipment, but we did gamble with some of them and at the time there were none that could win. That has changed and I know they play at a high speed.

Can they beat Shane when he's in high gear?

Probably not.

Don't fool yourself either, CJ.

Taiwan is an awesome country with enormous pool-culture. It is full of world class players. The thing is that they don't speak english and are bit isolated due to that and cultural differences. They are not that fond of traveling due to the expenses alone, where they have to have interpretors etc. If they come to DCC or US Open, no, they are not the favorites. They would lose to Shane and to many other american players, too. If they'd gamble in US, they'd lose again. But not any less, as americans would lose in Taiwan.

Only Filipinos are that adjustable, that they can play anywhere in any conditions. Europeans are pretty good when the conditions are good, but filipinos can play anywhere.

Due to the fact how good Shane is in the US, I'd still give more benefit of the doubt to him than Jay (then again, I guess Jay want's to kick him a bit so he'd push harder ;) But I'd say that Shane is Top 3 player in the world at the moment, when you count US Majors in it, and of course you should. Dennis Orcollo will be there too, and Jung Lin Chang probably also due to Far-East games and other Majors, (Yu Lung Chang being hot right now but still inch short, Jiaqing Wu will be there when he gets his life together well).

So yes, Shane would beat Yu Lung Chang in States, but would lose to him and about dozen more in Taiwan. Same with the Filipinos, with the difference that handful of them could beat him in the States too, depending on the day.

How long ago was this? I remember back in the late 90s in my hometown Kaohsiung, there were an estimated 1000 pool halls in a county with 2-3 million people. Of course, this was the time when Chao was winning championships and Yang was on the rise with a couple of other world class players that consistently finished high up. Ever since, the majority of the rooms have closed down and the monsters are more concentrated. I believe Ko can keep up with SVB in a high gear, given that him himself is in high gear as well. Like SVB, he has a strong repeatable break and has similar offensive fire power. Yang in the earlier 2000s will be able to keep up, if not beat SVB in 9 ball. He doesn't really play anymore since 2010 (on and off) and if playing 10 ball, his break is suspect.

How many straight matches has Chang won between the china open and the wpa 9b tourney?

Anyone care to list all the players he has mowed down? I'm on my cell, not easily to research.

I like Ko's high gear over Shane's. The guy breaks and runs 10 ball more than I've seen anyone else break and run 9 ball when he is on. But if the match starts getting ugly, I like Shane's grinding gear better than Ko's. Shane would do well to keep their match slow and strategic, rather than go shot for shot.

I THINK Chang lost a match earlier in the World 9 ball. Don't take my word for it.

it's crazy over there with the traffic and scooters everywhere

This was in the early 90s, 91 or 92.

I was in a pretty high gambling gear myself and would have gambled with any of their players.

Sounds like I may have to go back and get in "dead stroke"....I'm sure they would give me a lil "advantage"......sounds like a better training camp than the Philippines.

I liked Taiwan, although the food took some getting used to. Johnny Archer ate at the local Wendy's every meal.

We took a cab ride that neither one of us will ever forget, it's crazy over there with the traffic and scooters everywhere. There were 10,000 people per square kilometer, I think it was the most densely populated area in the world.

I agree. Shane definitely is more seasoned and plays more strategically and probably has more tricks in his bag. Ko tends to get a little wild when the patterns are getting complicated.

You know there are plenty of people in the good ole US of A that will give you a dose, if you get to feeling froggy.

During those years, pool hasn't really quite reached the level that it has been on for the past 15-20 years. Chao won the WPC in 92 and that helped the upward moving trend of pool in Taiwan until about the early to mid 2000s.

Physically, Taiwan has changed a lot since and you will probably enjoy it more during your next stay. When I was still in Taiwan, there were quite a few B+/A- players that were in middle school and that was probably just from one or two schools.
