I guess the Chinese and Taipei population arent that interested in watching pool? The chat moderator said there was around 2-2.5K viewers at any moment. I figure with a population of 1bil plus in China and with so many of their players playing, it would be more viewers than that on a free TV quality live stream.

Taiwanese pool fans aren't deprived of televised pool like in the USA. Plenty of pro tournaments broadcast on Taiwan TV, do a search on YouTube for Amway Cup or VLSports.

Plus, of course, there's the whole time difference factor.

I noticed many players wearing a polo shirt over a long sleeve in this tourney.

Niel, Efren, Marc Teutscher, Tohru Kuribayashi to name some.

Anyone knows why?

Recently, Toru's been wearing compression fit arm sleeves under his clothes whenever he plays.

Qatar did a great job with this tournament. Full streaming, good equipment and a referee at every table. My only beef is the need of a shot clock. They set the bar high for other countries.

let's pull some "history" from the tournament. here are the players Shane and Chang played:

Shane:
Hamzaa M. Saeed Ali (Group stage, Shane won 9-4)
Daniele Corrieri (Group stage, Shane won 9-5)
Chang Jung-Lin (last-64, won 11-9)
Dang Jing-Hu (last 32, won 11-4)
Kuribayashi Tohru (last 16, won 11-5)

Chang:
Mario He (group stage, Chang lost 6-9)
Mohammed Ali Berjaou (group stage, Chang won 9-2)
Nguyen Anh Tuan (group stage, Chang won 9-4)
Cheng Yu Hsuan (last-64, won 11-9)
Stephen Cohen (last 32, won 11-6)
Wu Chia-Ching (last 16, won 11-10)

i think, if shane had tougher opponents or more games, more "exposure", then he would have beaten Chang. i can imagine how strong shane would have been if he went through the qualifying stages.

Wow Shane nuthuggers are here. Shane loses to opponent tourney format they whine that Shane will win in long race. If Shane loses long race what next? Challenge opponent to play 11ball? 18 ball? What if Shane lose again? Play basketball or golf or tennis? Play until opponent loses. Much like the sore loser and his gang in bar who will not let you leave until they beat you at something .
Simple fact is tournament short race and long race (commonly played in money games) are different formats.
Nuthuggers say Shane is best player in money games or long format- until there is long race tournament where you bring the top players in world and play long races for days and weeks one cannot really sayShane is best player. And not use neutral racker, tables. Will he win such a tournament?
He will be one of favorites for sure but to say he will 100% win is nuthuggers fantasy talk.
The reality is the top players in tournament ( short races ) will have almost similar skillsets. So if they play in long races they just adjust, pace themselves, build endurance stamina. Also some players who do not do well in tourneys may do well in long races.
Cos really long races matches are not many (mostly play in money games), not all players (eg Europeans) play money games or long format there are not enough such matches to be comprehensive .I mean two thirds of the last 64 players in this tourney will probably never play money games with big boys cos they are unknown or no backers or no money. TAR matches were probably biggest non-money game long race format and it only had only small database of something like 30 to 40 matches and played between handful of players. Still not big enough database to say Shane is "best player long race"
And these nuthuggers excuses and justifications are just doing Shane a disservice - Shane would just want to move on analyse why he lost and improve those shortcomings instead of whining and justifying
:)

While it stings for Shane to not win this World Championship, he will be back again and again, adding more tools to his already formidable toolbox.

I expect that Shane will be looking for short races of 9 ball throughout this year. ANY TAKERS?

Yes, Shane only missed 25% more open shots than Chang. (That's 1)
Yes, Shane pocketed approximately 23% less balls than Chang. (That's 21)
Yes, Shane committed 100% more fouls than Chang. (That's 1)

At this level, the difference is enormous. The fact that Chang's mistakes came late tells me that Chang is not invincible, although he proved he will be a challenge for Shane for years to come. No rest for the champions.

Thanks for the STATS, ATLARGE.

JoeyA
There is also the safety and counter safety which Shane did not do well

Which part of Taiwan is Bangkok in?
ohNO.jpg

Semifinals start 130pm local time (630am EST)
Niels v Haya
Chang v Ouschan

Final start 5pm local time (10amEST)

Too bad they are showing 2 semis same time instead of diff time.
Looking forward to Niels v Chang final. Though will not be surprised if one or both of underdogs Haya and Ouschan get into final :) Today is new day and form may be diff from yesterday. Niels and Chang were awesome yesterday but not sure if their form remains

I've played in Taiwan before and at the time there were an estimated 1000 places with pool tables AND house pros. I wasn't crazy about their equipment, but we did gamble with some of them and at the time there were none that could win. That has changed and I know they play at a high speed.

Can they beat Shane when he's in high gear?

Probably not.

You would have LOVED to have been in Taiwan when I lived there in the early 70s for 3 years. I NEVER saw a pool table ever when I was there...only Chinese snooker tables. I lived above a snooker parlor at one time before I left. The only places I ever saw a pool table was on the American bases or in some of their larger clubs.

I LOVED it there. That was the days when the place was busy from the Vietnam war and there were THOUSANDS of military people coming and going each year...and sometimes each WEEK when the large aircraft carriers pulled into port.

I won the Captain's Cup (all Taipei, Taiwan) 14-1 straight pool tournaments in 75 and 76 and won tons of money playing 9-ball. I gambled 4-5 times a week for 3 years straight when I was there and I had about a 98% winning rate.

I NEVER saw a Chinese player come in an even play a game of pool, much less come in and beat anybody for any cash.

Pool in Taiwan came a dozen or so years too late for me. I was there and waiting for them when I was ready and there were none to be found. Now they are all world beaters.

Now it is a good thing I am too old and too smart to even think about trying to beat one of them.

You have to understand that most of these matches are being played during working hours in Taiwan and China. On another note, there is the language barrier. Sadly, I can imagine my fellow Taiwanese brothers having trouble setting up the stream on their computers. ANOTHER reason is that Taiwan is a lot more mobile-oriented these days and the number of people with a quality PC and fast internet connection is being replaced by mobile phones and tablets.

1. Taiwan is 5 hours ahead of Quatar...these matches were taking place between 4pm and 11pm Taiwan time.

2. I cannot imagine your Taiwanese compatriots having ANY trouble accessing a steam on their computers. In fact I sort of giggle at that notion.

3. I watched the stream on my tablet and phone...worked flawlessly.

Ouch !!

i'm for the underdogs. :)
by this time, haya has had 11 matches since the qualifiers. he beat Chua, Corteza, Faraon, Hayato, etc. there's a big advantage if you "know" the tables.

someone uploaded the final rack. i felt really bad for shane after that unlucky scratch. it was his final shot.

im sure he will be back - stronger and better!

Chao was the #1 player at the time and there were a couple others that were close

Yes, Chao was the #1 player at the time and there were a couple others that were pretty close. How high do they gamble at the local pool rooms, would it be possible to win 100k without playing the top player?

During those years, pool hasn't really quite reached the level that it has been on for the past 15-20 years. Chao won the WPC in 92 and that helped the upward moving trend of pool in Taiwan until about the early to mid 2000s.

Physically, Taiwan has changed a lot since and you will probably enjoy it more during your next stay. When I was still in Taiwan, there were quite a few B+/A- players that were in middle school and that was probably just from one or two schools.

I haven't seen it this good since the 80s.

I wish you were right. Maybe you can give those "plenty" a road map and circle Ft. Worth Texas.....I'll play them for $100 a game until their arm falls off at Rusty's Billiards. There's lots of action here in Texas, I haven't seen it this good since the 80s.

You know there are plenty of people in the good ole US of A that will give you a dose, if you get to feeling froggy.
