nice rempe tribute video

Great video. Jim Rempe will always be my all time favorite men's pro player. He has always presented himself with class and shown himself to be real gentleman in how he handles himself with his fans and the public in general. He truly deserves any and all honors that can come his way.

Well said, he's a heck of a player and a Gentleman!

Man oh man.....let it go.

That's why he charged a kid in a wheel chair, $100. to autograph a cue ball.
I just KNEW there had to be someone out there who would knock this......
Only in the game of pool...no wonder the general public hates poolplayers.
Man, why can't you just let any past mistakes be forgotten and let the man enjoy his well deserved honors?
What a bitter introverted life you must lead.

I went to the IPT Orlando event to collect autographs of all the HOF players on a cue ball. I got autographs from every one of them except one. Miz, Buddy, Varner, Ewa, Loren Jon, Ed Kelly, Sigel, Strickland, Archer, Fisher, etc. all signed the ball and were happy to do it.

Rempe was the only one who wanted money. Fug the fans.

Hate to tell ya this, but you've obviously never seen Rempe get on referees and tournament directors trying to get things his way. Some of us have seen more than his public persona. Jim, {who I've known for many years} is a great, great player and I'll be one of the first to admit it. He could be and was, a real primadona at times.

My King encounter

At 26 years old (now 50 yo) I played him *(as a very green APA 4) back in early 1990's when he came thru Statesville NC for a 'charitable exhibition' for 'a chance' to win one of his Meucci cues that they were "giving away" for the new local APA league teams. I won a chance to 'Play with the KING'. It was a "short race" to 3 -eight ball. He broke and ran 2 racks and then broke (making a ball) then shot me a lock up safe that Earl couldn't of 'spun out of' to make the hit. He thought that it was funny as hell as he walked away from the table grinning from ear to ear at the on lookers. I missed the kick, he ran out reclaiming his 8 (11) time world championship, (64 major titles w/ "9 international) "KING" status (and keeping his 'free' Meucci cue).

For a while I thought I had actually lost... then I realized who he needed to be for himself against a APA 4 and then realized later that he had actually saved me from the Meucci experience we've all heard so much about. For this I'm thankful for the 'King Experience'.

...after lookin back as I got older I had NO idea of his accomplishments at the time. There was no internet at the time and pool for me at that time consisted of 1 night a week in league since the last 6-7 years of my life was rapped up in medical school. Its unfortunate I missed out on the history he had already made in his professional life at the time... but after this APA amateur charity event I thought his "charity work" for the amateur pool player (leagues) was a little suspect after that encounter. I really didn't want his signature if it wasn't going to be on the Meucci cue that he 'didn't give away'. Maybe I had the wrong idea or something about his charitable contribution... like I said I was Very Green about pool and 'pool players'. I didn't 'get it' that they were also having to sell these 'charity cues' to supplement their 'road income'. After that I never heard much more about him for the next 15-20 years until I started looking up some of the older players who were dropping off like fly's.

I hope the best for for him cause I know 'pimpin ain't easy' as the swag slows down and the competition gets better. And the competition ALWAYS gets better.

if none of you have learned that pool players that make an actual living off pool, it is their downright profession, certain things have to be accepted. in a moral stand point I guess you're all right, but in a professional stand point I get why he would do that. its why I still love strickland and mcenroe, they may be volitile at times, but at their level and their source of income ceratin things will need to be accepted. and as far as the kid in the wheelchair, I know many, not one or two, but many wheelchair bound men and women that are more able and intelligent than most, so I never feel bad for them. they may never run, but plenty walk the walk. the kid should be treated like any other fan, no special treatment needed. unless ofcourse there is a mental disability, but thats a whole other story.

Rempe taught me a great lesson. I used to admire him and his skills. But he kept referring to those lesser but avid pool nuts as "suckers". He espoused this description many times.
I came from teacher/pupil relationship. Marial arts, musicianship, and performance. Respect for others was utmost. Always showing appreciation for the teacher, parents, peers. and our opponents.
As I worked my way up i was able to protect my family. Have a home. Pension. Medical insurance, Good education, Build a secure lifestyle with requirements and relish to boot.
I wondered who the real "sucker" was.
I wish Jim well. He is a great pro.
As for me I am not unproud to be one of the "suckers".

Bullshit! Bad behavior NEVER has to be accepted! You're the one that needs to learn something, it's about social behavior.
As for the autograph story, I've heard much the same about other professionals. I can understand that pool players resent it that other sports figures can charge so much and actually get it. I don't personally feel there is a celebrity alive who should command as much as a hundred or more for an autograph. Pool, unfortunately, is a game/sport that doesn't have the autograph demand that the other major {and some minor} sports have. I collected quite a few autographs in the years I actively collected and was only charged for one, Gayle Sayers, at a card show. I forget how much.

Jim Rempe Tribute

My first introduction to Jim Rempe was as a backer pof an opponent , I was 17 or 18 and he came through Columbus Ohio.
I had a friend that played so much better than the rest of us , I thought he was a pro.
I was probably making about 60 dollars a week and on Friday we went to the big time pool room "The Golden 8 ball" to get some of that money.
We spot this young guy all dressed up and looking like a rich kid , so we go after him.
My buddy wasn't as big a noob as I was , and I think he may have smelled a rat, anyway they discuss a game and befoire you know it , my buddys getting the wild 7 and the guy says for how much ?
I said "All of it " !
I think it was a race to 9 and Rempe won the break, he hit the balls like a straight pool break , which I had never seen anyone do and I said "what the hell was that to my buddy?
He tells me it's legal but don't worry , he can play this way.
I don't think my buddy ever got a shot at a ball till it was 8 to nothing and then it was something Efren would have shook his head over.
I used to see Rempe at tournaments all the time after that, he was always a good guy, I got autographs from all the players , including him and Mike Sigel, never a problem back in the old days , but once you see what some people do to the players you start to understand why they say 100.00
I have seen people bring in an armload of books, cues, jerseys, balls all for someone to sign and get mad if they didn't.
I learned about backhand English from having the "Ear" on one of his conversations with another player back in the early 70s .
He caught me and moved away but too late.
I remember the last tournament I saw him at he looked pretty dejected and I went up and asked if he was ok.
He said, they made this equipment so you don't even need a stroke any more . Diamonds with fast cloth.
He said "look at that guy" I used to give guys like him the 7 , straight shooter, but out of line every rack , now I can't beat him.
I understood what he was saying but life go's on , some of it was equipment , but some was age coming on , and the fire going out.
He was a great player at more than 1 game and as far as I am concerned one of the nicer champions I met through pool.
I hope he is doing well.

Well, the truth pill can be a bitter one to swallow sometimes.
Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant told the story on a live stream from Turningstone Casino. Rempe refused to sign the kids cue ball for less than $100. (this event was in Texas) The kid was about 7 or 8, in a wheel chair and dying of Cancer. Several pros asked Rempe to sign, but he refused. Hillbilly gave Rempe the $100 bill and gave the kid the signed ball.
Respect is always earned, not demanded. When you act like a dirtbag, people will associate that with your name.

Having a little reading comprehension difficulties there?
I said....."why can't you just let PAST MISTAKES be forgotten and let the guy receive his well deserved honors"?
It doesn't matter if he has any respect from you or any other knockers.
It doesn't matter if he acted like a dirtbag.
Some of the bigger shots in the pool hall of fame were some of the biggest dumpers and "business workers" in the game....but their accomplishments outweigh their tendency to deal seconds for an occasional "helpful card".
This is human nature in all sports or games....baseball, football, you name it.
It is what it is.
Let it go...this is NOW.....not 20 years ago.

if he's changed, then I agree

if he's still a dick, then no

most pool players are dicks, it's damn near tradition, most people on this board are never close enough in the scene to ever see it

I met Rempe when he did a totally amateur exhibition with Gerry Watson here around 15-20 years ago, and he was a dick

He was a great player for sure. He seemed like a great guy from the matches I've seen.
