I do not know if players were paid (I hope so) they are the product and they provided us with a competition that was excellent; excitement, drama and a level of skill that is truly world class. With the cache of this prestigious event, fuelled by the excellent performance of the players, one could believe that it might be possible to use it as a vehicle to bring pool more into the mainstream and bring Corporate America to the table. Unfortunately, without a major change in control, I do not see that happening.

When I look at what I believe is needed to advance this tournament beyond what has become a yearly soap opera, every answer starts with taking Barry Behrman out of the equation. From getting back credibility in terms of the player’s purse, to providing a great fan experience and creating something that Corporate America can possibly buy into the stumbling block, in my opinion, is Barry.

Although I find it more relaxing to turn off the sound when Barry is talking, I did listen to some of his rambling blather on Saturday. It seemed to me that he was setting the players up for a ‘you’ll get your money just not today moment’, combined with an ‘I’m going to make it even bigger and better with corporate sponsorship next year so if you want in on that bonanza support me here’. He then went on to placate the fans by saying something along the lines of ‘I had to make changes that, while it may have had a negative impact on some of you, it was somehow necessary for the overall good and besides, I am going to take on city hall and get us back to the perfect venue for next year’. The modus operandi always seems to be ‘I may have screwed up but I will somehow make it up to you next year.’

Although I would love to attend the US Open in person (my wife and I like to take at least one or two pool holidays a year to various tournaments) I have not been able to bring myself to do this. Candidly, I do not trust that I will get what I am paying for. Not because of the product, this year’s line up was exemplary, but because of the cavalier way that Barry Behrman takes to making changes on the fly with no apparent concern for the fan.

Thankfully, Accustats does a credible job of producing a live stream that is watchable and quite enjoyable, with very little production or streaming problems. Yet, when Barry Behrman takes the Microphone it becomes hard to watch. I cannot believe that any large Corporation would want to align its product with an event that features a chief executive that blathers on and on, in part seeming to be driven by ego, in part seeming to crave attention and approval and in part seeming to be a pitchman for something only he knows about.

Behrman has stated that he learns from other major events like the Masters Golf Tournament. He obviously has not watched this prestigious event from the aspect of how the people that run it do everything with class; the patrons, the players, the sponsors and broadcasters are all fully on board to make this event classy and memorable in every way and this has been consistent from the inception. Sadly, the history of the US Open 9 Ball pales in comparison.

I had the feeling, starting some months ago and until quite recently, that things might not be going the way that Barry had anticipated when he changed the field to 128 (positive) raised the entry fee (hmm!) etc. However, he was able to leverage the credibility of Roberta and especially Jay Helfert to bring it together at the 11th hour (in my opinion all that was successful at this year’s tournament may rest with them). The addition/return of Scott Smith was a nice added touch. What I would hope is that this will show Barry that competent people are needed to run this properly and the scope of this event has made him past his best before date as far as running this tournament.

I would like to see Barry sell the rights to the Open. However, failing that, and in recognition of the positive things that he has contributed in the distant past I would suggest he take in a majority partner, someone like Greg Sullivan or Mark Griffin, who could take it to the level that I think that it could achieve with that kind of leadership. Barry could be Chairman Emeritus and, although I would prefer he be seen but not heard, give him a carefully controlled, scripted, single, one time only, 60 second (with someone at the kill switch) spotlight at the microphone and be done with it. Only then would I think that anyone would have a chance to take this to a wider audience and for it to be something that Corporate America could support.

Time to sell it to a Las Vegas casino.
That's the only viable option imo.
It'd be yearly event from a major casino.
Maybe ESPN2 would pick up the broadcasting rights too.

Sorry it's not gonna happen...

None of what you suggested is gonna happen.

Barry thinks it's worth more than it is....

Anyone besides him running it isn't going to go as big as he has because it's not viable any more.

He wouldn't defer to anyone by bringing in a partner and you would have to be a masochist to want to try to be his partner thinking it would be anything other than his way or the highway.

This is what is most likely to happen.

You'll see less people show up or show interest.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it drop down to 64 players $1200 entry next year.

You'll see added money drop down. I would think probably just enough to qualify as a points event.

IOW, I give it two years tops before it is unsustainable no matter what you do.

After this years, you'll see more players like Scott Frost opting out. It's just not worth it when you don't know if or when you'll get paid. A chinese player is stated as having been asking for $1900 owed him from TWO YEARS AGO....

That's crazy....

I really wanted to play this year, but if I could've justified it, and I had cashed, I couldn't go ten days without getting paid, let alone getting paid in installments.

I could've gotten a backer. I have several people that would've probably backed me, but how could I ask and then if I win something, say oh sorry, they aren't paying me....oh, well they haven't paid people for two years or so, they're known for doing this...

What, then I'm on the hook for not only, the expenses, but half of anything that I might win???

Screw that.

No, if I play in an open, it's going to be because I can justify giving the money away for nothing more than the experience and the chance at the title.

Anyone else who goes expecting anything else is fooling themselves and the way things are going the title and prestige is going to be degenerating in value.

Could be a viable idea but, again, without Barry's involvement.

For the reasons you did not go is why several top players did not go ,, their expenses are well into the thousands not including entry fee ,
For that reason alone it's a farce for it to be a points event or concidererd a world class event

US open Is Barry DRUNK?

I am the only one who sees it or no one wants to say. I bought accustats feed everyday, great pool playing great event. Barry ruins it with his ramblings. No sponsor will come on board to support. I know that Barry has to have put in a lot of work early on and Kudos for him. But his behaviour has become embarrassing. AA for him would help.

wow !!!

agreed, barrys got to go, he lets the world know on camera that his favorite drink is crown and diet, no corp. will support him, just too unprofessional, on a brighter note , shane is a shining star in a messed up sport, props to shane !!!

Maybe the new money he's bringing in for next year is from Crown Royal sponsorship. Since their logo is a crown, it's only fitting.

....However, he was able to leverage the credibility of Roberta and especially Jay Helfert to bring it together at the 11th hour (in my opinion all that was successful at this year’s tournament may rest with them). The addition/return of Scott Smith was a nice added touch....

your OP is well said & hopefully won't fall on deaf ears.

i will add to the above, that Barry is NOT entirely stupid. he knew exactly what he was doing in hiring them.

Without Barry the us open will no longer exists, no one will be able to run it with this kind prize money.

Last year, it did seem that Barry had made a bit of Head Way and also looked like he would be bringing it into this year.

I can't speak for Jay but it was probably for that reason that Barry was able to tell jay some story and Jay came aboard as a trust factor. Maybe the same with Scott and Roberta.

All three obviously wanted it to become successful again.

Of the 2 people that you mentioned that could probably make it viable again, I doubt that Barry would relinquish the reins to anyone. He will continue on his path until he completely Tanks the Open.

I know, we keep saying it year after year but he continues and players continue to show up. One of these years tho, it will all come back Large and bite him on the butt.

Maybe 2015 will be the year.

I believe that someone like Greg or Mark G could do it. It would have to be scaled back, smaller venue, pare expenses etc, until it showed that it could be viable on a larger scale in the future. It would be preferable than losing it all together. Unfortunately, Mark is getting a bit older, has enuff on his plate running his own successful Tourneys
and probably not that interested in saving the Open just because he can or to prove that he could.

Well, one good thing, Barry might be able to finally mess up the Open for good, but judging from the quality of playing, as the final set, he can't take the game or the fight out of the Players.

Truly a sad situation just the same.

Surely, next year he will be back on AZ posting all the same old stuff that he spews every year and people will believe him one more time.

Well, I feel good that I didn't go this year. Last year and the year before I believed Barry's BS and my brother and I showed up with our VIP tickets and basically had to fight to get them in the location that was promised when we plucked down several hundreds of dollars each for them. Rumor has it this was even a bigger cluster than last year (surprise, surprise, surprise as Gomer might say). Hard to believe that could be possible but that's what my spies tell me.

I'm done with Barry. I love pool I'll fly all over the country to watch great pool but this man is a cancer and should be given radiation treatments until he's dead.

Watching it on a 70" TV was fifty times better than watching it live surrounded by 400# "spectators" who hadn't paid for a VIP ticket blocking my view. I for one will never go again as long as Barry is involved in any manner.

The only place this should be held is a casino. Vegas preferably. The venue is a joke but not nearly as big of a joke as the promoter.

Huh?

This subject has been beat to death for years now.:banghead:

If it's such a big deal, why don't someone run a tournament and
name it the North American Open. :scratchhead:

Why does everyone want to take Barry's baby away from him?

He's had it all this time...just let it go and see if someone can start
their own yearly tournament with a new name.

I've seen yearly tournaments come and go but Barry's tournament
just continues year after year. He must be doing something right---
well at least he is trying unlike all the hot air that goes around the
same time every year.

wtf are you smoking?

Barry can't even run it with this kind of prize money.

Look, in the USA everyone can run a pool tournament with the entree fee as the prize fund, maybe 5-10% funds added, this guy is going against odds and adding 100% to the prize fund ! is that gutsy move or what! This is the only way to bring high caliber players every year! ok he needs time for the funds to collect , but eventually he will pay everyone!
