Mark Wilson is GREAT

If someone can explain the selection process, I think we would all be interested!
Sure wasn't highest point leaders, or a players who competed in all the major event's with wins over the best.

John S. performed as expected, and as many people had predicted. He had no business playing in a game he hasn't been competing in.

This team did NOT play well together.

MW put this team together by his OWN formula, now he can take responsibility like any GM in any sport.

So what's he suppose to do?

The year before the US team lost 11-2, with all-stars on board. Now Mark comes in and has a vision for the future of the US team. In his first outing he does better than the all-stars. And if SVB doesn't melt down it would have been closer. A few rolls and we are in it.

So given all that, give him a break. They're in re-biuild mode. No GM coming in under those circumstances would be expected to fall on their sword their first few seasons much less their rookie year. That's completely unreasonable.

I think Mark is more than happy to have the buck stop with him and he would be the last guy to throw anyone under the bus. As to the rest, I think you're being pretty silly.

Lou Figueroa

Lou,

I am going to bite on this one!

How is it "Silly" ???

You keep what you kill??? No kills no keeps, unless your on the USA Mosconi cup team! Charity nation once again.

The whole "failure to coach" thing. The guys that were on the team will tell you you are wrong on that count.

Lou Figueroa

Silly logic. SVB didn't bring his A game, but JS had no A game to BRING, not this year anyway. There's no reason for Schmidt to be on the team. He was selected based on what? Can anyone answer that question?

What are you talking about?! Did you see his singles match the first day? People were saying it was one of the finest MC performances ever.

Lou Figueroa

Fist off, Mark is a great coach. With that being said, the European coach didn't select the European team, the players earned it. Why can't the Americans earn their spot on the team? I know it used to be that way, and I hope it goes back to that.

We don't have a tour, we don't have a ranking system for most of the tourneys our guys play in, there's really no good mechanism for ranking US players.

A team lives and dies by their coach. The buck stops with Mark Wilson and Mark Wilson alone. Deflecting criticism and blame onto the players is BS. Coach them! Establish infrastructure and ethics as paramount principles of the team.

I think you're attaching too much emphasis on the coaching. MW probably did the best he could with the team he picked. The problem is he gimped himself by not picking the best available players.

Too much theory, not enough practice. That's what sunk the boat.

Hall was the one highlight of this year's team, keep him and Shane and see what cream rises to the top next year. Plenty of tournaments to watch and assess, give up this ludicrous 8-player lock-in months before the MC and pick the guys who are playing the best.

Agree. Preparing all year for this is like Nicklaus preparing all year for the Skins Game. There's a lot of money in it, but it's really just an exhibition.

This was a massacre, Lou, and it was another step backwards, not forward.

Last year, Matchroom chose the team, and the result was the inclusion of a player that virtually everybody had begged for years to have omitted. By the end of day one, that team mailed it in.

All twenty of the teams chosen by America won five matches or more. Yes, this was arguably the worst ever effort by a team we ere allowed to choose ourselves, and it was only the fourth team that ever failed to win at least eight matches.

Anything less than eight would have been embarrassing, but five matches won is absolutely awful.

Sorry, but there is no silver lining here.

Then we will have to disagree, Stu. I believe the process requires all of us to take the long view and not be short-sighted. As Mark said in his post game interview, pointing to the team, "This is the future."

Lou Figueroa

Mark is great for the sport of pool. He will have players that can compete. They will represent themselves and who they are playing for with class. They will win and lose graciously. POOL NEEDS MORE MARK WILSON'S!!!

I think pool (especially American pool) needs to find a way to nurture those that are Mark Wilson types. May of us have a similar passion, not the education or experience, but the passion.

Did you see how every time a euro player won the whole team was down fist bumping and cheering him on? Thats what a TEAM does.. camaraderie is essential. We did none of that .. that sat on there hands barely paying attention at times. As I said before this started. they are a bunch of individuals who will get there ass kicked again by a better TEAM.

Agreed. All the rah rah stuff about team work and Mark was wishful thinking.

er, what were we suppose to be fist-bumping about?

Lou Figueroa
thought that was
to celebrate a win

He had plenty of support, if he'd played up to snuff. I mean, how many BIHs did he give up today?

Lou Figueroa
a lot

Lou;

I honestly could not believe what I was witnessing.

For Shane to play that poorly the whole way, and even moreso in the last two singles matches, just boggles my mind.

I was actually wondering if he had some sort of travel bug knocking him down.

best,

Maybe the Mosconi Cup flu?

Lou Figueroa

Our best player just got humiliated. Doesn't matter about the rest of the team if SVB can't anchor.

Lou Figueroa
just sayin'

He looked like he didn't want to be there. In the past couple years I haven't seen SVB use "give up stroke" like today. Like when he missed the 6 ball down 4-2 vs Nikos. That simply is well beneath him.

Too many passive personalities on this team. They didn't even look like they wanted it. Europe ran through the finish line like champs...good for them.
