I'll Say What Many Are Already Thinking - Mosconi Cup, 2014

I agree, this event is more in line with professional wrestling and Monster Trucks. Circus Arena is a fitting name for the venue.

Not to mention that 9 ball is basically a carnival, bar, gamblers game anyway. No wonder all the real money in Europe is in snooker....this whole thing looks like a 2nd class pastime.
Was Mosconi alive when they named this thing? I just can't picture him being happy this has his name on it. It's like pool has regressed into the lowest common denominator.

You say it's not a dig on them and then say they're like amateurs going up against pros...this is laughable.

Change it to a race to eleven each match, winner breaks and let's see how it turns out...or maybe not have a country go against a continent???Or don't allow any Europeans on team Europe that spend more time competing in America than in Europe???

Who has more money to invest in player development, a rec league or the San Antonio Spurs? Who has more money to invest in coaches and training? A rec league or the San Antonio Spurs? Who has more capital to invest in scouting for new talent, a rec league or....you get the idea. I'm not crapping on the American players. I'm crapping on the American structure which is barely a structure at all anymore.

As for not allowing Europeans to play who play more in the US, first off, golf doesn't do that for the Ryder Cup so it seems cheap to do it for pool. Secondly, making amendments like that simply scream, "We can't beat you so we have to change the rules."

Anyone thinking changing the rules that the European players residing mostly in the US would not be allowed to play for Europe are fooling themselves me thinks. Out of this year's team only one lives in the US. Take Darren out and put in Nick vd Berg or Souquet or Melling or ton of other strong players. Do you think this would've changed things that much?

The first Cup was in December, 1994. Mosconi died in September, 1993. He did not like 9-ball.

At last year's MC HOF dinner, during his induction speech, Barry Hearn said he went to ask Mosconi's widow if he could use the name. He said she said (though I believe Hearn called her by the wrong name), that Willie would love it.

Or the Venues in the USA either. Apparently.

What was wrong with it? Did they pump in too much Jet Lag in the air conditioning. Possibly, the vendors were only selling Lucky Rolls to Team Europe.

Still enjoyed

Did not get to see the coverage live, but watched the replays every night. Big fan of everything about the production, the format, and commentary. Just wish it went on twice a year. I think we, the US had many chances to take it down. I liked some of the new ideas with Team US. But don't like the team selection process. I still feel the team should be picked based on tournament results, the way it was a few years back. Still can't say anything bad about the tournament and coverage. Thanks again matchroom.

Fine, but what else could she say? It sure wasn't what made him "Willie Mosconi" the legend he was though was it? It's just pretty sad when a sport devolves as it ages.

It makes the vending machine route operators that install the coin-op tables happy though

There is no team we could of fielded that could win in that venue

How do you know? Last Mosconi in England was in 2012. Archer went 6-0 in that one but nobody seemed to care when it came to this year's selections. We also have a guy who could spot seven of the Mosconi 8 in Dechaine but nobody seemed to care when it came to this year's selections. Mike has three straight top tens in the Derby City 9-ball and three straight Top tens in the US Open 9-ball.

We went to battle with a lot less than we might have. A team anchored by Shane, Mike and Johnny would have had a real shot.

How trivial. Mike is twice the player he was two years ago. And yes, he can spot a ball or more to anyone but Shane on the team with break box and tight equipment.

Actually, Mike drew two of the Mosconi 5 at the Steinway Classic in August. He didn't break a sweat, crushing Schmidt 9-4 and then beating Bergman 9-4. Mike also beat both Bergman and Hall at the US Open. These guys are not in Mike's league and they prove it over and over whenever they have to play him. Meanwhile, Mike went 2-0 against Shane this year, beating him at the Derby City 9-bal event and again at Turning Stone.

The one ignoring the facts is you.

I thought you were talking about their players first of all second score means zero there's a little bit more involved mentally giving the 8 than you think lastly Mike has yet to prove his mental toughness ., 2 yrs ago he started in on a friend of mine Ryan McCressh at the Expo I went over and told Ryan to STFU Mike is getting ready to be you in 2 seconds Ryan a well known head case Mike and I had a few words he went to the table and dogged the next shot and lost it Ryan came back and beat him
I'm a pussy cat compared to what he would have faced their
Great player yes but his mental toughness is in serious doubt
He will deservenly get his chance but this was not the place for it

I've got a lot of things, Lou - a heroin habit, a two month overdue rent check to write, a flat tire on my 82 chevette, and genital herpes.

but I don't have any give up in me. no sir!

I believe I'll eventually get off the dope and that will help me to better manage my bills; my cousin said he'll give me a hand this weekend with the tire and I'll be damned, the cream seems to be clearing up my rash.

See, there's always hope and you may have missed it in my earlier posts where I stated unequivocally, and even just plain vocally, that I am still rooting for Team USA.

I am also a realist, however, who calls 'em how I sees 'em.

I know I should have waited til tomorrow afternoon to start this thread but this is how I feel this afternoon.

Go USA!!!

best,
brian kc

ACtually that wasn't what I was thinking at all.

I was thinking more along the lines of, damn this table is taking WAY too many shots that should be missed....

AND....

This race to 5 shit is barely acceptable to me when it's a weekly tournament with mostly bangers, here it's crazy...

AND....

Damn, Europe is getting an uncharacteristic number of rolls in their favor...

Yeah, so those were the things I WAS thinking...

I can't really say what other people were thinking...

don't eat any more of those grapes, the last lot were sour

Ryan McCreash...now there's a class act

Mike belongs on the team, period.

First and foremost Johnny needs to be on the team imo.

He is a true leader and plays great in this format.

What kind of spot can jhall get? You might just get to make a score off me.

Break from the box, tough equipment, winner breaks, probably one game on the wire going to 11. Justin is playing some wonderful pool right now and that's likely all he needs. FYI, he lost 11-9 to Mike at the US Open.

Like you, I think the world of Justin Hall, America's newest pool superstar.
