Sifting Through The AZ Ashes Looking For Embers . . .

Is it just me or does there seem to be an inordinate amount of pap and prattle threads these days that are of little substance, not very useful, or even very entertaining?

Not trying to be a 'Negative Ned' here, just wondering if I'm alone in how I feel.

Seems to me it used to be that almost every thread up on the main forum had something worthwhile to read. Useful, helpful, interesting or entertaining.

Now, I find myself having to sift through a lot of ash before locating some embers.

What do you think?

best,

I agree, this is the best post so far.

Brian, I'm with you, here. Sometimes it gets to be just too much, and a break is in order. That's where I'm at now.

Facebook is better, albeit it's not pool focused, so you get hit with lots of assorted news, both good and bad.

The only ember picking I want to be doing today, is shifting around the logs in my fireplace, to keep warm during this frigid cold spell.

I'm with you, Brian.

I now check the Ask the Instructor & Aiming sub-forums & a quick look see of the main & then it's usually off to something else.

I just posted in the thread about a one pocket sub forum. I think more specific sub forums would be beneficial so as to avoid the main's, shall we say, 'character'.

Part of the issue is that we've talked about just about everything by now. And when someone resurfaces a topic, they get the old, "Oh no, not this again. There are multiple threads about it. Do a search."

And then there is another issue: there are many members who, for a myriad of reasons, do not start threads any more.

I think the subforums for pool related content are a major part of what has damaged the main forum. Most of the substance has moved from the main forum and when people find the traffic is very low and mostly just a small dedicated group on a subforum soon there is no need of posting. Just so many times you feel like telling the same six people your view on the same thing. After awhile you think "why bother, they know" and the subforum withers and basically dies. Now you have no meat on the main forum and basically no subforum. The members have lost, the site has lost, nobody gained.

With the addition of new moderators I think one thing that should be considered is the consolidation of some of the things that have been split off back into the main forum.

I agree. I have not been a big poster in the years I've been on AZ. more of a lurker:D but I don't even do much of that anymore. I love pool and like positive posts to go along with that. I cant read more than 1-2 negative posts without getting off of the site. hopefully it will get better.

Hu,

I can agree with you, IF there is a change in what is allowed by the site. That said I think what you may have in your vision is back when AZB was small & perhaps the membership was more serious about the game, than what color chalk should I use.

Best 2 Y'a
Rick

PS Like I said there are too many now that have little to no usage. Perhaps when popularity wanes they should be closed & somehow be intertwined back into the main.

Agreed. When I first came on board there was always a good debate going or interesting comments to read that genuinely provided some really good insight and knowledge. Not that there's anything wrong with people currently posting, it just doesn't seem as.... as...... fun? maybe.?
Let me put it another way, sometimes I really miss the presence of Lock n Load or Chop Doc, posters like that, and RKC, while he might be a bit abrasive sometimes his stuff is usually interesting and he really knows his stuff.
Perhaps the decline of AZB is more a symptom of the decline of Pool in America today.
I understand that a number of the old school have taken to Facebook.
Wish they'd come back

I rarely post but I have read most threads since I became a member. I think lately the wheat to chaff ratio is at an all-time low. It’s a bad AZB day when the most I get out of my visit is a pleasant gaze at an avatar of Alyssa Millano in the Funny pic/gif thread.

There are pros and cons to Facebook. Like I mentioned -- the self-moderating is great, and even just *having* this ability seems to make oneself more tolerant and forgiving. Like you can knock people off your page at any time, and so it's like the confidence of concealed carry -- you tend to be even more even-keeled.

But it's not pool-focused, and unless you are very good at time management, you can find yourself getting mired in other stuff. (Especially politics, if you're not careful about self-moderating your time.)

There's nothing like AZB for pool-focus at the moment. But with an anonymous forum like AZB, you have to deal with the trolls, salesmen, and the OCD-types who have nothing better to do with their time than to lockjaw-fixate on minutiae.

Just part of the cycle. I think even the "all posts suck recently" plays a part in that cycle. Soon, we'll have the DCC, not to mention that league is starting back up so that some of us can entertain you with our thrilling nights out. :p

Several groups are attempting to form up... None getting the traction of AZ yet... "Sneaky Pete Mafia" seems to be more towards the beginner and they already have some serious drama from ownership from my understanding.. "Common Pocket Player".. So far seems ok but still not tons of ineraction from higher level players... I started "Outsville Pool and Billirds" but made it a closed group so noone can post or read it unless they are a member.. I just activated "8 and Out"... In that one I made it an open group and I am the process of inviting and making the Industry people and Pro players admins so they can moderate their own threads in a group like they would on their personal page... Hopefully that one will catch traction and their can be a good place for open interaction...

Are you looking for the sites you are working on to compete with or be an alternative to AZB?
