Just curious how many species of wood are out there that would make a great playing cue, but are generally considered too ugly to put in a cue
Quite a few for sure but there is a catch. Since it takes the same amount of effort to build a cue with nice wood or ugly wood why would anybody want to be the guy who makes ugly cues? I actually know someone who makes and made cues out of different exotic woods found in south Florida. They did appeal to a few people after some hard selling but the end result was the the maker became known for making ugly inexpensive cues and for years lamented the fact that he couldn't get much money for his cues. Go figure!
Granadillo, zircote and BDR.
BDR? I am not familiar with that acronym
B D R = Bois de Rose.
One of only two woods that I see as rivalling Brazilian Rose.
I suspect that Joey thinks otherwise. Lol.
Don't look at it as Pink Joey, think Magenta.

I'll hazard a guess. . .horse apple or osage is another wood that plays well but then who wants a yellow cue.
Just found a pile at the local wood store only one piece look decent but after looking it up has very similar characteristics as ebony possibly harder. Definitely fills your requirements uglier and cheaper then ebony and just as hard.
