Just curious how many species of wood are out there that would make a great playing cue, but are generally considered too ugly to put in a cue

Quite a few for sure but there is a catch. Since it takes the same amount of effort to build a cue with nice wood or ugly wood why would anybody want to be the guy who makes ugly cues? I actually know someone who makes and made cues out of different exotic woods found in south Florida. They did appeal to a few people after some hard selling but the end result was the the maker became known for making ugly inexpensive cues and for years lamented the fact that he couldn't get much money for his cues. Go figure!

Thank you Mr. Dayton. I was just curious how many good tone woods get neglected in the cue market.

Just incase someone were to ever want a all black cue, and didn't care about it being ebony, a great tone wood with some nice black paint is a consideration LOL

Very tight grain maple that is usually loaded with brown sugar lines makes a great playing shaft. It also makes a great playing forearm or handle.

B D R = Bois de Rose.

One of only two woods that I see as rivalling Brazilian Rose.
I suspect that Joey thinks otherwise. Lol.
Don't look at it as Pink Joey, think Magenta.

You oughta try bloodwood and pernambuco. :D

I have had two BdR cues, and I would say the color is closer to Black Cherry. A lot of makers avoid it because it bleeds like a stuck pig when turning. Plays incredibly well, however.

ugly wood

I don't know, i think yellow heart is pretty boring.

I had a BDR cue And I thought it looked great..
Harder then hell to photograph and get the color to show.

I agree with Joey in California, but I disagree that Blood wood is ugly, I like it. As for Pernambuco it maynot have alot of figure but the cue had of it hit wonderfully.

Just found a pile at the local wood store only one piece look decent but after looking it up has very similar characteristics as ebony possibly harder. Definitely fills your requirements uglier and cheaper then ebony and just as hard.
