Anyone have any good stories about "that guy"?
The Backbone of the Industry.
That guy is the guy that wants his game to be better so bad he would drop a load of money on it because he has it.
When he realizes he has to put in some time with the game, perhaps that guy will have gone through several cues and cases and will likely have bought some books and will spend some time reading on how to get better. Maybe he loves pool enough to work on his game and that helps a room owner stay open.
That guy like it or not, is the backbone of the industry.
He might even love the game enough to buy a table and install a home recreation room.

Sounds like league players to me, playin cue, break cue, jump cue, backup jump cue, chalk holder, cue holder, and can't make a ball. Talks about going to Vegas like it actually means he can "play" as a 4.
But they do support the pool "industry".

There was guy at the pool hall other night bragging how much his 8000 dollar cue cost and how it was worth more then the diamond table blah blah he couldn't make a ball I moved on other side of hall cuz of him
Thought I might have been in St. Louis last night lol
Guy twirls his custom cue around like he's leading a parade yet he can't run three fookin balls.
I have never seen one of these guys in my life
I have seen many not so good players with nice cues
and a ton of pool hall bums making fun of him
Given the choice of the two ,I prefer the guy who is successful in life and can afford to
buy the cue,car,home and support his family to the envious critical know it all broke
who can run a few racks
It is my experience that all this type of criticism is directed at a straw man
by pool hall losers.

I think this might have been an issue when pool cues werent so prevalent. I actually take a different stance: too many Walmart cues out there. Players, recreational or otherwise, should have a decent cue.
There is no game that can match an expensive cue. That is, the look of the cue and the skill of the player should be mutually exclusive, for all intents and purposes.

Predator P3 with a Z2 shaft, because "it puts more spin on the ball."
Predator BK3, because "it's the best break cue ever made."
Predator Air 2, because "it's the best jump cue ever made." Even though it's not allowed in the APA.
Predator 4x8 Butterfly Case. Even though it only holds 2 cues and a jump cue.
Predator Glove, because it matches all his other equipment.
Predator Chalk, because "it's better than that cheap blue chalk."
I'd rather see the guy who is still playing with the beat to crap Meucci, that he bought new in the 90's.

i think buying and collecting pool products is one of the most desirable appeals to the game. some people genuinely like collecting and dealing cues/accessories etc. if the person likes to buy stuff, let them buy stuff. if the person is up for it, then they will let you try the cue out or give you some feedback on the product. i heard there was a 17 yr old kid from mexico a long time ago that always played off the wall and beat many pro players. if that is the case maybe we should all be playing off the wall lol i will say it is entertaining listening to the guy who genuinely thinks the cue is going to make him play better as he switches cues every 3 weeks though...

i am "that guy" and I am happy to be "that guy".
Pool is something which I enjoy playing and I love to use nice equipment to play.
I am happy to sit down with a beautiful cue and let people beat the crap out of me on the pool table.
At the same time, I do look around the pool room for nice cues instead of good players.

I flew to Japan to play in their US$800k event with a US$12 cue I'd bought a week before from a pool hall rack, with no cue case. If you are having a heart attack I and the team I work with can keep you alive and repair the artery in record time ( documented door to intervention time of 17 minutes).
Let hem have their glory. I have hot and cold running days. Sometimes I kick ass and other days I get my ass handed to me. But nobody is giving me the 5 and out to prove their superior skills on the table.

Everyone needs a beat around cue, set up the way you have your playing cue. Also a cheap break and jump that works well. I have mine in a old leather case and it travels with me where ever I go. I park the car in the shade. Magically its never warped.
