Would you be willing to dress nice to raise the opinion of billiards?

No offense to anyone, but this has to be one of the "lamest" attempts to try to gravitate pool players to "somebody's" idea of what is "better dressed" as I've seen..

If you look at the photos, you will see that EVERYBODY dressed that way in that era...assuming they had a suit to wear. The people in the pool hall were wearing the SAME CLOTHES that they would have worn ANYWHERE ELSE on that particular day.

THEY DIDN'T DRESS UP TO GO TO THE POOL HALL!

That is ALL you NEED TO KNOW!

They wore REGULAR clothes for the time.

Today's players want to wear what is "REGULAR" clothes for today's fashion (if there is such a thing).

A dress shirt and slacks is one thing but a tux or suit and tie is another. I don't think looking like a four star waiter, lawyer, or politician is the answer to the problem.

Why would you wear a dress shirt and slacks to play a sport? Why does that not sound completely ridiculous to you?

When you go to your local pool hall, or any pool hall, would you be willing to dress up like they used to in the old days? If it would raise the stature of billiards in the public's eye and help the game, would you do it? Hell, it might even bring women back to pool halls.

Personally, I would but I understand why others wouldn't. I mostly wear chinos/khakis and polo shirts to work along with casual-dress footwear and that's about all it takes to feel out of place (over dressed) in most pool rooms or bars with tables. Aside from maybe a couple of upscale places which are less about pool anyway.

It was different times back in the day. For better and for worst. We can't go back, only forward.

I don't see a need for formal dress when playing pool, but I do find it interesting people's perspectives on dressing up, and suits in general. Most common folks seem to look at it negatively, associate the dress with perceived unfavorable professions. While I'm not a firm believer in "the clothes make the man", I do appreciate doing myself up to the hilt for certain occasions and going that far to present yourself does say a bit about your own personal image, imo. How you want to show yourself to the world. It's hard for me to understand how someone could be dressed in a 3 piece suite and feel like a waiter or a monkey. It makes me feel pimp, actually. Any waiter I've had that was in suite seemed to make typical TGI Friday's wait staff look completely inept. A completely different class.

I would guess the same reason people wear athletic gear to non sporting events. Image and comfort. Dress shirts and slacks while playing pool seems no more ridiculous to me than a ball cap, jersey and shorts...in public where there's no sports going on. For grown men, at least. Kids, I understand.

Funny part about these photos is that's how everyone dressed to do everything 100 years ago... they dressed like that to take the trash out.

We have a bingo!!! These photos all show people simply wearing the dress of that period

Pool is a game, not an athletic sport. We need track shorts, tank tops and running shoes about as much as a chessplayer does.

What amuses me is guys who dress that way (track shorts, tank tops and running shoes) and are 50 lbs overweight. :D That's lipstick on a pig.

The lunacy of this argument is that most people play sports with clothing that is comfortable and "conducive" to ENHANCING the play.

People wear shorts in track because it is easier to run with shorts. Same for basketball and soccer. Football players run also, but wear longer pants in order to protect their legs from the frequent banging around and falling to the ground.

Same argument holds true for long sleeve shirts.

Are you trying to convince me that wearing a suit, long sleeve shirt, and a tie is going to make anyone play their "best"?

The ONLY people who WANT to dress up players are people who LIKE dressing up and who don't want to feel "different" from the people who wear "regular" clothes.

If you want to wear suits and see suits you need to go to the opera house or something. Pool players ain't into suits and ties unless that fits "THEIR" personality and style.

Worry about the "play" of the game and not what they "wear".

Aloha.

It's ridiculous to me when the dress shirt/slacks/dress shoes are what's expected to play a sport. If that's what you choose to wear... then so be it. I choose to wear a cashmere sweater jogging in mid July, that's on me, but most would think it seems out of place.

Exactly! Wearing dress clothes while playing a sport is simply stupid.

What amuses me is a 50-pound overweight person telling people that they look better in a suit than a 50-pound overweight person in anything else.

Are you saying "fat people should be covered up"? If that is the case, then they should be covered up all the time, not just when playing pool.

Funny you mention dressing this way as a way to bring women back to the pool halls yet I fail to see a single woman in any of the photos.

I only responded because I know the topic is a hot one for you. I'm just jerking your chain a little. I get it. :p

They wear athletic polo, weather proof pants and sneakers with spikes is very different than "dress clothes".

I don't know why I'm trying... it's like explaining differential equations to a 6 year old.

You didn't ask that, moron, you asked why would anybody dress up to play a sport. Those clothes don't look like sweatpants to me.

I said "a dress shirt and slacks", moron. When did I mention sweatpants? Do you only own slacks and sweatpants? Are those your only two clothing options? Hate to break it to you but you have more options.

The ONLY way to get women into the pool hall is to get MONEY into the pool hall. If there is NO MONEY in pool then women aren't going to the pool hall to associate with the "bums".

However, women will FLOCK to places with "bums" if they have the CASH. Look how many women are LINED UP for BLOCKS outside nightclubs and places where they KNOW that "bums" with CASH are (think NFL, NBA players, etc.). The women AREN'T there because they give a rat's about those sports...they are there to see or meet the "bum" with the money.

If you NOTICE, the ONLY "bums" there that are wearing suits and ties are the waiters or the players who NATURALLY prefer that "style".

If you have to "dress a part" to do something "natural", then it ISN'T natural.
