How strong is your pool scene?

I've always lived in the Cleveland/Akron area so this is all I know but it seems like pool is booming in Ohio!

-I can find a $500 added tournament within 2 hours of my house every single weekend.
-Often there are 2 or 3 nice tournaments going on in the same weekend.
-I have seen Earl Strickland, John Morra, Adam Smith, Jonathan Hennessee, Danny Smith, Chris Bartrum, Oscar Dominguez, Shane Winters, Alex Olinger, Billy Thorpe, Jeremy Seaman, Shannon Murphy, Scooter, Jason Hunt, Shawn Putnam, Dee Atkins, Chris Szuter, Ben Zimmerman, and Jayson Shaw all come through to play within the last year.
-About once a month I'll hear about a $1,000 set going on somewhere in the area.
-TvMike is from Michigan but always comes down to Ohio to stream tournaments every weekend.
-The APA Leagues shoot out of almost every bar in the Akron area at least 3 nights a week.
-The Cleveland bars have a Party 8-ball league that is pretty popular.
-There is a new pool room in Akron that opened up with 7 brand new diamond 9 foot tables.

Is this normal or is Ohio just the place to be for pool right now???

ohio and florida both seem to be jumping right now. florida has several good tours going, and some great weekly tournaments too. a buddy of mine lives up in ohio and is constantly telling me about how awesome the pool scene is up there too. he even mentioned something about a break and run pot in the neighborhood of 19k somewhere. craziness.

There is a Saturday tournament just about every week and they host the Steve Cook memorial every year here in Lima, also there are some active leagues.

Good for you guys!

My area is really dead. In the 80s and early 90s we had something similar. I can recall every pool hall having all their tables professionally redone every year. What a joy it was to play on perfect tables with a room full of players. Now the tables are only redone when something goes wrong with the table and it's completely unplayable. Not to mention all the players are gone.

It's top notch. If you can't get played in OH, IN and KY are so close. However, at the present, OH could field potentially the best "team" of players to take on another state, especially on a BB.

Corey Deuel is from Ohio.

So is Troy Frank, JR Gay and this forum's own favorite author Jay Helfert.

I'm from Ohio as well, not that I'm on anyone's radar. I used to work at Rack n Roll in Mentor years ago when pool halls were still packed to the gills. I moved to NC 20 years ago and thankfully the scene here is pretty damn healthy.

Alex O, Billy Thorpe, Ryan Stone, TJ Beck, Jason Miller, Liz Lovely, Dee Adkins are some more from Ohio, and there are plenty more. At the Derby back in the Executive West days Big Nasty said if you see someone in a white T shirt in action they are from Ohio. When he said that every table in the action room had a least one person from Ohio on it.

It seems strange to me that I have to explain this to Ohioans.

WILLIE MOSCONI RAN 526 IN OHIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that makes Ohio the epicenter of pool

do youse guys even know about the 4 seasons of Ohio?
it's Winter, Still Winter, Almost Winter, and Construction.

pt...always willing to help out

I recently went to Akron, where I'm originally from, and played at King of Billiards. Great little room. They had a nice little bar box 8ball tournament that I almost snapped off and easily got some cheap one pocket action. Nice to see things doing well.

ive heard ohio referred to as the phillipines of the US.ohio and florida have always had a ton of pros and shortstops. i used to live in denver and when danny smith moved there for a bit, he was "that kid from ohio" until he beat everybody. then they were like like "oh yeah, thats danny smith, everybody knows about him" haha

Last night in Dayton, Airway Billiards had their Monday night open 9- ball tournament. $5 entry, double elimination, 42 players including Billy and Alex O. The place was packed. Lots of fun. Whenever I am in town, I stop by to play or just watch.

Maybe originally-i dont know- I know his formative years, he was in Philly where Caras taught him quite a bit . He left philly for ohio at 15 i believe.

Ohio has always been a strong pool state but pool rooms have been closing there as well. Corey's home room in Columbus is gone as is another player's room there. Dee Adkins place is about it there now from what i know.

Corey doesn't live in Ohio anymore. Yeah, for some reason most pool halls don't seem to be making money. It must be really hard to obtain a liquor license...

I know Corey doesnt live in Ohio -I just meant his homeroom when he lived there. His big US OPEN "checks" were moved from his now closed room there to Player's where they hang on the wall near Bartram's table.

Does that place still exist? I did a google search and there is a Dello's Rack n Roll that I found. Didn't know it existed, the last time I was in NE OH, I played at Wickliffe Lanes. My parents still live in Fairport Harbor.

When I went to college in Findlay OH, I had a part time job at a 3 table room in the front and a barber shop in the back. You could get a hair cut in two different ways the same day. :D
